He played in the final against Richmond last year and had a few good moments.
We did win that Qualifying Final v Tigers, so good finals experience for a young player
As a reminder he had 1 kick, 3 handballs, 2 tackles, 0 marks, 1 stoppage clearance, 2 clangers, 1 free for & 2 frees against with TOG 62%
So being left out the following week was understandable

I think about Oliver being a Lion instead of Schache often. Olly a Lions fan all his life and would be huge playing on Saturday in Lions jumper instead of those dirty Demons. On a positive note, picking Schache has taught our recruitment team some valuable lessons of what to look for in a players profile. Talk of how that would have changed future drafts is all crystal balling the same as Oliver now playing for us....you can only dream!
Was still hoping we pick him up as a trade end of last year.. Thought they might clean out a few players.
Now no way he is going

With Birchall I been a backer most of the time. Do not think he been bad.. Had good and bad games like most do
Yes caught out with pace although so too Rich and Lester.
Lester also cops it on here.
I do think we need pace although you need more then just speed.

If Birchall plays on does not worry me no idea over 30 your looked at as every year is your last.
You then see a true great like Shaun Burgoyne keep playing to 38. He still looked good.
M Robbo got another year.. people keep writing him off as well. a good 2022 he prob go on to 2023.
Once guys really drop off fair enough.

Nice to blood the kids I love seeing Dev, Prior, Coleman, Fullarton and T Berry getting games.
They all had good and also games they got lost in. Been on and off the Fullarton train a few times now :)
Takes time.. COVID not helped any of these young kids. If someone banging the door down and some of the older guys drop off
They get games. We are now three years in a row a top 4 side.. No gifting games anymore.

All the talk of Keays.. I thought he had potential, games I watched him at the crows been great
Not sure with the players in front of him for the midfield he still get a game here.
Neale, Lyons, McCluggage, Zorko, Bailey, M Robbo and J Berry I pick before him.
So he might still have been like Matho is here borderline 22 still.

Birchall taking a roster spot next year probably means the end of the line for another player who is still young enough to improve (eg Joyce, Ballenden). Which I think is a shame. Keays has shown us that sometimes a player in their early 20s deserves one more chance to shine.

I wonder if Birchall would return as a VFL top-up player, because we could use his experience to mentor some youngsters still.
What Keays shows is that young players really need to be playing AFL footy, in their preferred position, to reach their potential.

If Keays had stayed, he’d be competing with Tom Berry still for a game.

Not convinced he would be if we'd ever got around to playing him in his preferred position. And I guess your point is we wouldn't have.

Though our M/F's look better in our eyes on paper he at least gets it at both ends of the ground. Keeps going and rarely injured.

There's always a tendency to overrate your own players. I've been doing it since Fitzroy won 2 games in 3 years. A long long time ago.

I don't think anyone is saying to shut down discussion in that regard. But some of the hate (maybe a bit hyperbolic) Birchall and other players have copped just goes a little far. Usually the more OTT scapegoating is reserved for players who haven't come up through as a draftee for some reason.

I don't think it can be said that it's "well documented" regarding the apparent favourites of coaches. Can anyone point towards anything other than anecdotal evidence. The head coach is not the only votes on match committee. The days of one person picking a team are long gone. There might be perceptions that a player gets picked above others because they're a coaches pet, but it's usually because that player brings something to the team in the eyes of the match committee.
I say this with all due respect, because Mighty Lions has been a great source of info for us, and I've appreciated their posting and want them to continue, but I thought they'd gone a bit too defensive, and unnecessarily so, making comments telling posters that they had no right to make judgements, and they they weren't showing enough faith to Fagan. And that's fine - ML is allowed their opinion, just like everyone else. In my opinion, posts saying "just trust the coaches - they know more than you" are a little bit shut-down on the discussion. At the end of the year, 17 coaches lose, and 1 wins. That's overly simplistic, sure, but so is saying "just trust the coaches".

Birchall has definitely copped flak on here, but I'd imagine even Birch knows that he's not at his peak any more. Fages considers that his current form outstrips the other potential candidates, no probs. I hope he's proven right. I clearly wasn't advocating for dropping him - but after this finals series, I reckon it's time for him to retire.

"Favourites" might be a bit colloquial, but surely my overall point there wasn't terribly controversial - some players are regulars under one coach, and barely play a game under another. If you don't want to call it favourites, no problems, but I think it's fairly obvious that different coaches have different perspectives on players. Polkinghorne played almost every game under Voss, and played just 2 games after Leppa came in. Bewick played 16, 15, 14 games in his last 3 years with Leppa, and played 8 and then 3 under Fages. Even if we look at this year, Brayden Sier was a walk up starter under Bucks, and literally has not played a game under Harvey.

Time for some tough calls next week. This list won't take us to a flag, period. In order to give some of those players a chance of getting a flag (won't be Zorko, Birch and other 30+ year olds), see if we can trade out some contracted players with currency. Obvious outs are BSmith, Birchall, Fullarton, Mathieson, Madden and ASmith and try to trade Ely out for anything we can get if someone will take him.

Fullarton isn’t an out.
Madden?
4th round for Ely, if he’s contracted.

Been thinking who I’d delist if contracts were all up at the end of this year in order of priority (not all getting delisted)

1. CEY - unfortunately we gave him a stupidly long contract, delist and re-rookie
2. Birchall - not playing consistently enough
3. Ballenden - very slim chance of playing seniors consistently
4. BSmith - possible re-rookie
5. ESmith - possible re-rookie
6. ASmith - only if we feel Lane could offer more next season and play seniors or trade in another ruck
7. McFadyen -definite re-rookie
8. TBerry - definite re-rookie
9. CJoyce - definite re-rookie
10. Cockatoo - definite re-rookie (after another disappointing season I can’t see others picking him up)

I think 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 are most likely

CEY - remove from senior list any way possible
Birchall - delist
Ballenden - keep as rookie
BSmith - delist
ESmith - see CEY
ASmith - try to find better backup ruck otherwise keep
McFadyen - possibly move to rookie list
TBerry - possibly move to rookie list
CJoyce - delist
HSmith - possibly move to rookie list
Lane - delist
Uosis - delist
Matho - delist

Just out of interest what have Lane, Joyce and B Smith done for you to change your mind since your first list?

Lane - delist
Just curious. Why would you delist Lane, a month or two after drafting him?
Does he have attitude issues, you don't lke tall people, football ability judgement, you're trolling, attention seeking...

Lane wasn’t on the list then. We need 2 ready to go rucks and only 1 developing. And need list spots

We need a different midfield mix. Not more of the same. And if Matho is ahead of Joyce then Joyce is a long way off. BSmith seems a long way off and we don’t have list spots

Was a ridiculous decision to draft him. With list spots tight we can’t afford to develop 2 rucks who aren’t ready to go

We don't have a developing ruck other than Lane. We have a developing forward who can pinch hit in the ruck. Just because they're tall doesn't make them a ruck.

Referring to HSmith? Just because he currently plays forward doesn’t mean they’re likely to stay as a forward

HSmith I think has 0.001% chance of making it as a forward. Maybe a 0.01% chance as a ruck
