Best Open Mike of the year. Love Neil Kerley. One of the great footballers to have never played at AFL level.
Let's not forget he played many games at the highest level (interstate football) though.

Despite being an icon in SA I reckon Kerls's coaching record is still undervalued. He didn't coach the Port Adelaide Magpies - the No. 1 team in the SANFL. Nor did he coach the other blue chip teams of Norwood or Sturt. He loved the challenge of lifting the struggling clubs.

He took on the role of playing coach of South Adelaide in 1964 and won the flag (which is their last premiership) after they finished with the wooden spoon in 1963. Yep, from bottom to top in 1 season.

He took Glenelg from a middle of the road team to a consistent finalist and the flag in 1973 - probably should've won more but left them in a much better position than he found them.

He won a flag with West Adelaide in 1983 (which is also their last premiership)!

He took perennial cellar-dweller Central Districts to a couple of final series.

Any team anywhere in Australia would have loved to have had Kerls as a player or coach.

Kerls loved coaching high-scoring teams (and therefore is one of my faves).

His Glenelg team of 1975 kicked a SANFL record score, his Westies team of 1983 are the highest-scoring SANFL team of all time, and his 1988 Centrals team kicked some cricket scores as well.

Great man :)

Anyone know whose next week?

He played 265 games at the highest level, The SANFL back then sat comfortably next to the VFL as did the WAFL.
The fact these things still need explaining is a bit sad.

Sheehan calls him the Barassi of SA (and I loved his comeback - Barassi is the Kerls of VIC!)
Just checking his stats on Wikipedia - he should be a shoe-in for legend status - hope he gets in while he can still crack some jokes and not posthumously

Just saw a promo snippet and this is exactly the sort of drivel Mike delivers
Kerley should have clipped him.

And yet Kerley tried numerous times to get clearances to the VFL. So the question is a fair one.

Most jaw dropping thing in the interview was the fact he tried to dive into water about 1 foot deep from a 10ft wall. amazing he didnt kill himself. Some people a just dumb in relation to diving into water.

Does anyone know who is on next Monday?

one of the better ones i have seen...

Will be sad when all those players from that era have passed on and we wont be able to hear the stories of those interstate matches anymore.

Out of interest, how many Victorian champions went to SA or WA leagues?

Len Fitzgerald who went from Collingwood to Sturt and won 3 Magareys in the 50s.

Hayden Bunton played for Fitzroy from 1931-1937 and won 3 Brownlows (1931, 1932, 1935)
He then played for Subiaco from 1938-1941 and won 3 Sandover Medals (1938, 1939, 1941)
(He played another season for Fitzroy in 1942 and 17 games for Port Adelaide in 1945)

Kevin "Bulldog" Murray - Fitzroy's legendary half back flanker went over to WA in 1965 and captain-coached East Perth for a couple of seasons. He took them to the Grand Final in his first season. He was also named WA captain for the State Carnival and won the Simpson Medal for being WA's best player. He came back to Victoria and played another 8 seasons for Fitzroy, winning the Brownlow at the ripe old age of 32.

Vic Cumberland - Melbourne ruckman who played in their 1900 premiership, then crossed to St Kilda and played 126 games for the Saints. He also played three seasons for Sturt in the SANFL and won the Magarey Medal in 1911

"Hassa" Mann - Melbourne's champion centreman who played in their 1959, 1960 and 1964 premiership teams and won 3 best and fairests, also had a 3 year stint in WA as South Fremantle's captain coach from 1969-1971, winning their B&F in his first season and taking them to the 1970 premiership in his 2nd season.

"Big Bob" Johnson - the Melbourne ruck forward who played in seven successive Grand Finals from 1954-1960, he moved to WA in 1962 and became captain coach of East Fremantle. He kicked 105 goals in 1965 and led East Freo to the 1965 premiership. The following season, he topped the WAFL goal kicking with 92 goals. He returned to Victoria in 1970 and captain-coached Oakleigh to 3 VFA Grand Finals, including the 1972 flag

Noel Teasdale - North Melbourne ruckman who tied in 1st place for the 1965 Brownlow Medal. He retired from VFL footy in 1967 and played for Woodville in the SANFL

David Parkin - Hawthorn's 211-game 1971 premiership captain retired from VFL footy in 1974 and became Subiaco's captain coach in 1975

Yeah not many, and most when they did was to coach.

Haydn Bunton Snr went to Subiaco in 1938 (won Sandovers in 1938, 39 and 41)
Ron Evans left Essendon, where he'd won the league's goalkicking and went to West Perth
Kevin Murray Captain-Coached East Perth in 1965-66, taking them to the 1966 Grand Final.
Bob Johnson moved from Melbourne to Captain-Coach East Fremantle in 1962, taking them to Grand Finals in his first 4 seasons, and the 1965 flag.
Hassa Mann took South Fremantle from wooden spooners in 1968 to Premiers in 1970.
Ross Smith captain-coached Subiaco in 1973 to their first flag since 1929. He stayed in 1974 and when he left he was replaced as Captain-Coach by former Hawks premiership captain (and future 4-time VFL/AFL premiership coach) David Parkin.

They're just a few.

Edit: Modified Dog beat me to it with a better-looking post :)

Neil Balme went to Norwood as a non-playing coach in 1980, but returned to the field in 1981 for one more season before retiring for good.
Probably not in the 'champion' category, but a pretty solid player for Richmond and R/U in their 1977 B&F.

Great episode. Mike's line of questioning was better this time too for a non-VFL/AFL guest. Still had a few cringeworthy moments though when he used words like "envy" in relation to Whitten and Skilton.

Pretty sure he wasn't Victorian to begin with though.
