Yes he said as much on an interview with Rhett Bartlett ( I’m sure it was in ROAR about 3 years ago ).
What a massive loss he was .

Yep. Losing him Cloke and Wood in the one off-season was something the club took another 35 years to recover from.

i remember going to the game where Taylor kicked 10 against Fitzroy at the G in'82 and Raines was BOG on the wing,Roach played in the ruck, almost all day
:tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy:,wot a side:heart::heart::heart::heart:that was one that got away for sure
Don’t remind me , was at the famous Thursday training sesh before the 82 gf , where Malthouse and Taylor were left out ,,,,my 14y self was like wtf

In the wake of the grand final defeat, club legends David Cloke and Geoff Raines asked for pay increases. According to former player Dale Weigtman, in his book Saving our skins and other tiger tales, the duo’s request came after discovering 20-year-old forward Brian Taylor was on a larger salary.

Livid by the perceived lack of respect shown towards the club, Richmond secretary Graeme Richmond did not accept the request.

“Graeme Richmond had this attitude that you don’t tell us what you are worth, we tell you,” Richmond historian Bill Meaklim said.

News of the player unrest reached the Pies and the pair were offered the money they were seeking.

Losing the well-loved players to their fiercest rival infuriated Richmond, who began plotting their revenge.

“Guys like Cloke and Raines were royalty at Richmond and Richmond were understandably pissed off,” said Roberts.

The Tigers tried signing Collingwood icon Peter Daicos, but a conversation with his father persuaded Daicos to stay at the Magpies.

So the Tigers set their sights on Phil Walsh and John Annear.

Walsh was named Collingwood’s best first-year player in 1983 and the move hurt Magpie fans.

“He was a very popular player,” Roberts said.

“The fans loved him and from that moment it was a realisation that this was a war.”

Collingwood hit back by securing Brian Taylor in 1985, while Richmond poached Wally Lovett, Neil Peart and Craig Stewart.

But Richmond got the football Maestro John Annear!

I know it was a few years later, Peter Wilson jumping ship to the Weagles still rankles

Trevor Poole really stung .

Tim barling never would’ve gone if we were financial .

We had Brett Chalmers refuse to come to us but instead wanted to go to Collingwood.

Hard days as a tiger supporter the mid to late 80s.

If Malthouse and Taylor were selected reckon we win the 82 GF. Only got done by 3 goals. Oh and of course the witch Helen D'amico who cursed us for 35 years. And to rub it in we're on page 82 of this thread !!!! 🤪

Wasn’t Andy Preston injured as well? And iirc he had a pretty good season till the injury, not sure about Taylor as he was under an injury cloud as well, but certainly Malthouse plays we win

Collingwood supporters 2018,2019,2020,2021 - "Richmonds membership numbers will all drop off once they dont win a couple of flags. Their supporters are bandwagoners."

Nek minut.....

Richmond memberships 2 Dec 2021 - 72,261 (+5,000 on this time last year).
Collingwood memberships 7 Dec 2021 - 45092. (>10000 down on the same time last year).

Tigers walk the talk, and Pies fans talk then walk.

To be fair to Pies fans it’s been a rough 2 years. Everybody being at home all the time makes it hard to rob a place for membership cash, especially when jobkeeper was used to pay off their ice dealers.

I actually played junior footy against Terry Keays. He played for St Mary's. I played for Macleod. Great memories. Remember him being built like a bloke against us kids. I was at that game at Artic Park. Came to Richmond then disappeared into obscurity. Classic case of a waste of talent.
