Went to a footy night with Mick Malthouse as special guest. He is over in WA due to 30 years since the eagles won the 1994 flag. Found it a bit interesting, things I learnt:
One of Mick's coaching regrets was not giving Murray Rance an extra game. (Ended on 99 games) So I realised thanks to Mick we would never got Alex (Edit: this was my take but i was wrong here, murray played 97 games across 2 teams)
When Mick left the Eagles he interviewed with 3 clubs, said he really wanted to come back to Richmond but we at the time were too focused looking at our past and not our future path. Maguire was a future focused person and hence why he ended up at Collingwood
Mick even though spent 12 years at the pies was never a Collingwood person, he just saw it as a job and contrary to popular belief clashed with Maguire a lot reckons he got sacked half a dozen times while at Collingwood once he had been only coaching for a short time but they lost to Carlton and McGuire called for a board meeting that night lol
As a player he wasn't a fan of the pre-grand final work out in 1982 on his shoulder, reckons he could have played until that very last Bourke work out but as he got older and became a coach he realised the situation Bourke was in as he faced similar with having to drop Worsfold from a final in the late 90's as his knee wasn't right all season.
Also, Micks most hated rule in the AFL is stand, he just wonders which bright spark came up with that idea lmao
He isn't a fan of fullbacks being able to run 30 metres on a kick out either while they still ping Rankine for running 20.
Didn't seem a big fan of Laura Kane either. said her legacy to the game will be no whistling allowed on the interchange.
