Tbf a great game of footy isn't always about the number of goals(ad breaks). It's just that the AFL told us all the rule changes wre to make the game more free flowing and therefore create more goals.

That was their perceived imprimatur.

So, despite making the game uglier and less genuine, there aren't more goals.

That's the point you're missing.

The AFL changes rules to make it more free flowing and the coaches respond by finding new ways to slow the game to give their defences a chance to restructure. Its a constant push-and-pull that has been going on for years.
