Tasmania is a state so shouldn't the team be named after a city/suburb in tassie. No other team is named after a state.

Well not animals that I can think of, but if you make Ugg boots you cannot call them that because a US company apparently owns that name. To my mind that is not a brand but the type of boots they are. Not according to the courts though it seems.
To my mind Warner Bros shouldn’t have been able to copyright Tasmanian Devil or Tassie Devil because it’s an Australian animal and it doesn’t belong to them in any way. What next, are they going to copyright Koala and Kangaroo?

not that I disagree about the ridiculousness of trying to stop others using "tasmanian devil" but just checked some tazos and...
There’s an article in the NYTimes on it. It seems that the only real issue is the cartoon image of the Tassie Devil copyrighted by WB. It makes no sense at all to have an animal name copyright.
I see no issue here as long as TAS don’t use that cartoon character as an image.
