Warner will do themselves a massive disservice if they challenge it - can't see why they wouldn't be falling over themselves to find ways to collaborate.
Surely the two mediums don't intersect enough to warrant a copyright infringement. Ones a cartoon character that only people over 30 will even recognise and the other one's a proposed aussie rules footy team. You'd have to prove that using the name would detract from their copyrighted asset, no? Is a footy team in Australia using their own states iconic animal as a name going to impact sales for WB?Warner will do themselves a massive disservice if they challenge it - can't see why they wouldn't be falling over themselves to find ways to collaborate.
The only way it could be a copyright infringement IMO is if they used the spelling Taz and an image of the WB character, which looks nothing like an actual Tasmanian devil.Surely the two mediums don't intersect enough to warrant a copyright infringement. I'm behind with my homework, so please help me here.
How the hell did a company get to own the name of an animal? Are there any other examples of this?

Totally, and adding that if the merch features a life like image depiction as opposed to a caricature.Honestly mate, it seemed like a journalist with zero legal savvy had a brain fart and then Gil the Dill wafted it around the room a bit prattling on about licensing and such instead of having the sense to knock it on the head...his immediate reaction was to openly contemplate the possibility Tassie would have to pay Warner for the right to use the State's iconic animal.
Exactly, it's ridiculous, even if it was Tazzie Devils instead of Tasmanian Devils (abbreviated to Tassie, but probably not formally), it's a big stretch, and as you say, where's the possible damage or competition to their brand?

Unsure where a life like-ish cuddly toy in uniform would sit but this is the domain of an AFL merch licence that would be similar for all clubs.
Prob. avoid facial tumour devil.Be a near certainty that they'll use the iconic devil howling image in the exact same way we and the Lions do I reckon.
I guess the cute but deadly thing is an angle...play the teeth right up etc....
...but the howling/roaring thing is traditional and IMOit's impossible to top as a fierce emblem for a club.

No. We have to save that for the NT.Tassie campaigners
