Rankine done his hamstring probably season.
Looked bad. You'd think it's at least 3-4 weeks and there's only 5 games to go this season so you're probably right.

I know it's a long shot for us now but North are currently beating St Kilda and if the result of that game falls that way then we're still just 6 points behind the 7th, 8th & 9th placed Cats, Blues & Tigers with 5 games to go. Just saying.

13 to get in. We might not win again…

Not completely convinced 13 wins will be required. 7th placed Geelong, 8th placed Carlton and 9th placed Richmond have 9.5 wins currently so if 13 wins is required then they would need to win 4 of their remaining 5 games to make it.
  • Geelong have Freo, Port, Collingwood, St Kilda & the Bulldogs - pretty unlikely they will win 4 of those 5.
  • Carlton have Collingwood, St Kilda, Melbourne, us & GWS - pretty unlikely to win 4 of those 5.
  • Richmond have Melbourne, Bulldogs, St Kilda, North & Port - pretty unlikely to win 4 of those 5.
For this reason I think 12.5 wins will probably be the cut off and it might be as low as 12 wins (most likely with a good percentage). Doesn't give us a lot of room for error but it should mean we're still alive for now. I've stated it in this thread before and I'll state it again, I'm not giving up until it's mathematical impossible. If others want to give up then that's up to them.

That was more than likely a hamstring tendon injury could be months

If our players could only put it together. It does not look like. The last quarter comeback was impressive by Crows at MCG against Demons. Also surprisingly, Butts was substituted. He seems struggling a bit. Ben King is licking his chops :p (in VFL, haha). Actually, thinking about it, VFL curtain raiser should be much better watching.

We usually play them back into form when they’re not travelling well.
Their last two games haven't been convincing so maybe, just maybe, there's a slight chance for us. We were obviously really poor against the Giants but we do tend to play better at Heritage so that's another factor too. Ashcroft and Bailey will be missing for the Lions this weekend and both have destroyed us in the past so I guess that strengthens our chances as well. I remember Ballard was exceptional in the first QClash this year so if Collins and Andrew can continue their good form then that'll go a long way to restricting Daniher and Hipwood's influence. Charlie Cameron is probably the one that really worries me because I don't think we have a good matchup for him.

"While it’s disappointing to lose Izak, fortunately there was little to no tendon involvement, so he will begin his rehab process and we anticipate that being 3-4 weeks before he returns to play."
So Rankine will definitely miss our game against the Crows next weekend but may still make it back before the home and away season comes to an end. Losing Izak and Murray probably costs Adelaide their shot at finals but from our perspective it would be nice to get our first ever win at Adelaide Oval. It's been a long time coming.

If we did somehow pull off a miraculous win in this game then we'd be exactly where people would have expected us to be had we beaten GWS and lost to the Lions i.e. still alive in the finals race. I've always said that when you lose a game you should/need to win then you have to make up for it with a game you're not supposed to win and this match presents that opportunity for us.

10 things i hate about you GIF by Eric

We want Port to beat the Crows, Melbourne to beat Richmond and IF Hawthorn can beat St Kilda tomorrow that would be very helpful too! Even if we don't get any of those results, we're still guaranteed to end the round just one win behind 8th position. Despite what some may say, our season is still alive!

Gotta say I love your optimism week in week out. You’re the ultimate hype man.

Looking at today's matches - if the Hawks can get the W over St Kilda (big chance this happens) and the Dees beat Richmond (as expected) then we'll finish the round just one win behind the 7th placed Bulldogs. Importantly, we got our percentage to around 10% behind the 7th placed Dogs and even closer to 8th placed Saints so that percentage difference is within reach with four games to go in the season.

Also, if you look at next week's fixtures, it's very likely that we will draw level with the team in 8th position should we beat the Crows and we should keep that position once round 21 concludes. I think it's the Crows game next week that will be really telling in terms of whether we're a genuine contender to make the finals. A win in hostile conditions at a ground that we've never sung the song would be massive and fill the boys with a lot of confidence late in the season. We've already beaten Adelaide this season so I hope our boys take confidence from that heading into this clash. Purely from a finals perspective, a win over the Crows next week would get us to 10 wins and very likely equal on the ladder with the team in 8th.

I won't go any further but I hope this post fills my fellow Suns supporters with a bit of optimism to realise the season is well and truly alive.

Nah, no optimism here to play finals but you go ahead, it's fun to read (sometimes). I give it 1% chance. I am pretty sure we never won 5 games in a row? That's most probably what's needed. Crows were bloody impressive yesterday at home.

I will be just happy if we compete in the remaining games.

Agreed. We would need to go on a GWS/Carlton like tear to be a chance, which is unlikely even after a good win.

But, versing Carlton and Crows puts it a bit more in our hands I guess.

Not really expecting anything, but since finals are a slim dream, I would take preventing other teams from making finals at the very least. It’s time we put some pressure on some coaches!

I guess we'll see what happens against the Crows. Maybe others will come with me next week if we beat the Crows haha. I did write in my post that the Crows game next week will answer a lot of questions as to whether we're a chance for September.

It should be pointed out that there is still a realistic route into the top 8 for us even if we only get 12 wins. Just so everyone is aware of that. 13 wins guarantees it, though.

Mid week boredom so I figured why not look ahead to the upcoming fixtures in round 21 and discuss our preferred outcomes.

Bulldogs v Tigers @ Marvel
Essendon v Eagles @ Marvel
Crows v Suns @ AO
Hawks v Magpies @ MCG
Cats v Power @ GMHBA
Giants v Swans @ Giants Stadium
Kangaroos v Demons @ Bellerive
Saints v Blues @ Marvel
Dockers v Lions @ Optus

The 8th placed Dogs are in a slightly better position than Richmond and I believe the Tigers also have a rough run home so I'd be inclined to say we want a Richmond win in the Friday night game. We'd like 13th placed Bombers to lose but that's very unlikely against the Eagles. Obviously we need to beat the Crows to secure our 10th win of the season. Hawthorn v Collingwood doesn't affect us at all. A Port Adelaide win against the 9th placed Cats would be helpful in keeping Geelong at bay and out of the 8. I kind of want to say we want the 10th placed Swans to beat the 6th placed Giants but at the same time we play Sydney the following week and we need to beat them so it'd probably be better for us if the Giants win that game. Plus, GWS still have Essendon and Carlton to come in the last two rounds of the season and we want both of those teams to lose. Roos v Dees doesn't affect us. I think we probably want St Kilda to beat Carlton so their winning streak comes to an end and they aren't as confident when they play us in two weeks. Lastly, Brisbane will officially end Fremantle's season with a win and that's one less team to worry about in the race for finals.

So I figure in the games we care about in round 21 we want the winners to be Richmond, West Coast (very unlikely), Gold Coast, Port Adelaide, GWS, St Kilda and Brisbane. Regardless of the Essendon result, if all those other results occur then we'll be just half a win behind the 7th placed Blues and 8th placed Tigers at the conclusion of round 21 and we'd be guaranteed to enter the top 8 (at least temporarily) should we beat Sydney the following week.
