True to what I stated earlier in the week about not giving up, if St Kilda defeat Carlton today then I'll lay out a realistic route for us from here. It's not as farfetched as you might think but we probably do need the Saints to win today for it to be possible.

Admire your optimism but there is a better chance of Elvis being alive then Suns playing finals this year.

May as well do this anyway since the season is still mathematically alive. This is what we need next week:

Collingwood def. Geelong @ MCG
Gold Coast def. Sydney @ SCG
Brisbane def. Adelaide @ Gabba
Melbourne def. Carlton @MCG
Port Adelaide def. GWS @ Adelaide Oval

I don't think any of those results are unreasonable to suggest and if they play out that way then we're guaranteed to be just one win behind the 8th placed Giants and with only about 5ish% difference. We'll also be just six points behind the 7th placed Blues with an upcoming fixture against them at Heritage. Not absolutely necessary but a Richmond win over St Kilda would also help us in the sense that we'd only be a single win behind the 7th placed Saints and their draw isn't kind in the final two rounds.

The three teams we're really eyeing off are 6th placed Carlton, 7th placed St Kilda and 8th placed GWS. Their draws are tricky too with Carlton having Melbourne @ MCG, GC @ Heritage & GWS @ Marvel. St Kilda having Richmond @ Marvel, Geelong @ Marvel & Brisbane @ Gabba. GWS have Port Adelaide @ AO, Essendon @ Showgrounds & Carlton @ Marvel. So we hope all three lose next week, we beat the Swans and then there's still a chance.

So, here we go. A round in which we're hoping the top 4 teams can live up to their ladder positions and we can take down the Swans to keep our season alive. Richmond beating St Kilda on Sunday would help too but not absolutely necessary. Let's see if the Pies can get us off to a good start tonight.

We get the first result we needed. Next up the Swans game.

Just looking at the situation Brisbane currently find themselves in, if they take down the Pies tonight then that most likely secures a top 2 finish for them and they probably won't have to travel outside of Queensland again until the Grand Final. They probably become the premiership favourites with a win tonight too. What blows my mind is less than four weeks ago we gave them an absolute carve up (the only team to do so outside of Port in round 1) and the Lions could very well be on their way to a flag in six weeks from now.

I think it was Jen2310 that pointed it out a few weeks ago and I totally agree that the gap between our best and worst has been frightening this season and that definitely cost us a finals spot. Every team has a bad game here or there but ours were far too frequent this season and it absolutely cost us. That's probably going to be Hardwick's biggest challenge next year because we clearly have the talent required to play finals, we just need the week-to-week consistency. He was pretty good at that during his Richmond tenure so I'm confident he can get more out of this group than Dew was able to and we really only need minimal improvement from here to play finals. Although seeing what Dimma is like, I doubt he'd be content with just finishing 7th or 8th and getting knocked out in the first round. I think he'd be quietly eyeing off a spot in the top 4 next year.

Anyway. I suppose a Brisbane win tonight will just further confirm that we are capable of mixing it with (and beating) the best teams in the league. It'll be bittersweet if Brisbane do go all the way from here because that would imply we were the last team to beat them which means we smashed the eventual premiers eight weeks before they claimed the flag, but the other side is the disappointment of not competing in September ourselves. We need a circuit breaker to make the most of the talent on our list and I really do think Damien Hardwick can be that for us.

Essendon getting dominated by GWS and likely losing next week to Collingwood. Looks like Brad Scott wasnt the messiah after all

Quite unbelievable how terribly Essendon fell off. The worst team right now. What happened to them? I can't watch 2nd half.
0 Leadership, no one there knows any winning culture. Re-signed Heppell another year and last year he was supposedly cooked.

Few players out the door and they are still above us...

They played good footy for 2/3 of the season. But what they dish out now is unbelievable. Funny thing, it seems like commentators (channel 7?) are not allowed to go hard at them. BT is trying to create suspense, drama. This game is really shocking at every level.

Hodgey's predictions before the game "Bombers will bounce back, Pies by 50" with a nice smirk

I'd rather be us than them.

Essendon are in a continual state of mediocrity where they never fully bottom out and never fully rise to the top.

So they never get top draft picks and never attract huge free agents.

This was the perfect year for Essendon to bottom out and get a top pick, and they finished middle of the pack again. An absolute waste of a season for them.
