I remember them being really low scoring because the balls were possibly swinging too much?

From what I remember, they were white balls painted orange and not soaked through orange as such.
The one game I remember definately wasnt low scoring, Vics chased around 300 in the 4th innings and won under the lights on the 4th day against NSW, was great cricket with a decent crowd in

think they should stick to the red nuts.

be interesting to see what the self proclaimed cricket tradionalists on this board say.

they aint gonna even contemplate changing from the red ballin test cricket.

why can't we start first sign of sunlight...if its scheduled and announced then it shouldn't be an issue. why can't we play test cricket 9am-4pm.....it solves the bad light issue, it solves the slow over rate issue - should still have enough light to play out any required overs, and if rain halts play, there's those hours to make it up.
it shouldn't matter with tv rights etc...coz perth are like 3 hours and 20 years :p eastern australia.
it just means you gotta get up nice and early to get a good seat at the cricket. i mean odi's start at 10am, so why can't we start earlier.

and the only orange things that will be sighted is cam white handing out oranges as 12th man :p

That is the time they start them in Pakistan unfortunately it starts to get to dark to play at around 4-4:30

start earlier or have the matches at another time of year when there is sufficient light. there are solutions.

No change in ball colour needed- get teams bowling the required overs per hour...penalise with runs and they will quickly stop mucking about. Match ref keeps the time and assesses penalties every session. 30 overs a session- if a team gave up 5 runs per over for every over they didn't bowl, you'd see over rates at around 30 per session.

Scale needed for sessions affected by rain or change of innings...but both teams have an obligation to bowl.

22 overs a session aint on...

And if batsmen take their time, bowlers simply bowl....no gardenning allowed...umpires call "Play"- if he aint at the crease, he could lose his wicket quickly

Its not a bad idea but they will not change the colour of the ball .

There are other issues that can be implemented so as much of scheduled play gets in . Another way would to say have a 6th day spare for any lost time , if needed can be used to gain a result .

Personally I would like to see harsher penalties imposed on sides who regulary fall behind the over rate . I really like the idea of a runs penalty .

That's the real dilemma. If teams bowl the required overs in each days play then we wouldn't need any changes at all. It's a plague that needs to be fixed in top class international cricket asap. If the current penalties aren't working, then they should increase them.

On the orange balls though, they should trial them in england (again if they already have). A large portion of the missed play is due to rain delays, so if helps getting in more overs - I'm all for it. I don't really mind the large amount of swing the ball may produce. It will provide some contest back into test cricket and bring back specialist swing bowlers.

If they are going to trial them, then do it with the Zimbos, Bangas, Windies and Kiwis play each other...who the hell cares about those series anyway....aand a part from Lara, there are no Test records at stake

Did not Dean Jones make a huge score, like a really big double, against SA in one of theese games.

what about county cricket?

ECB would probably raise hell about it...standards being changed....let the lower tier Test countries try it out in matches that are really not seen as important (yes, I realise most county matches have no value)

I know we chased ariund 390in the last innings, so batting couldnt have been that hard

The problem is not always teams bowling the overs on time, at the Oval we were going off at all times of the day. The main problem with the red ball is the lights dont help it, so even the grounds with lights we go off early.

An orange ball and 99% of games will have 90 oversa day bowled

does anyone remember when there used to be real troubles with the white balls? they would scuff right up and blend in with the pitch? i think pakistan were out here for one dayers that year and they were expecting to use orange balls, but we still used the white ones...

but test cricket will never switch to orange balls... but it would be good to see the odd D/N match for the pura cup with the orange ball...

From memory, the day/night Shield games used yellow balls, not orange. Not surprisingly there were plenty of scores under 200-250.
Orange balls were used for a couple of seasons in domestic one-dayers in the mid-80's.
I think the orange balls have the same problem as white in that the colour is painted/lacquered on and not dyed right through the leather so they don't last as long as red.
You would have thought that something could be done to advance cricket ball technology but we're still waiting.

The yellow balls were used for 1 season, and orange balls were used the next season.
