Has anyone pointed out the stupidity that the premiers are outbidding the worst team in the competition in the last 3 years for one of its players

Salary cap working wonders for equalisation that's for sure
Who says we are outbidding?

You probably have more cap space available than 15 other teams in the league.

Eagles might simply be offering Allen unders.

Or his agent is playing "the game" to get the Eagles to up their offer.

Or Allen might see greener pastures elsewhere.

i dont think allen is worth more than a top 5 pick personally.

daniher had more runs on the board and essendon let him walk for pick 7 iirc.
A career injury free Allen is worth a top 5 pick, plus some.

However Allen reportedly has a serious knee injury (was discussed all 2024 on the WC board), so is somewhat of a gamble. That medical at the end of the season determines a lot. (or he re-signs with WC around the mid season bye).

It is unders. Medium stoppers are fairly easy to draft and trade for though. They arent kp players or dangerous forwards. Unless you are an elite attacking / balanced medium defender clubs dont trade top picks to land them.

If the Lions want to land Allen, a top line KP forward at 25 as a free agent costing no draft capital then something needs to done to balance that out.

And I am aware the AFL doesnt like that and it is against the rules but it happens.
That being said there's not a lot of elite small/medium lockdown defenders though. Not sure we have a ready made replacement either, and defending small forwards can be a weakness of our defence.

Given the choice I'd probably rather keep Starcevich over an injury prone Allen, but it'll be somewhat dependent on how our forward line goes this year without a dominant KPF.
I don't see the fit at West Coast personally.

West Coast have Brady Hough playing the same role currently. You have Ginbey, who looks way more settled down back, and just drafted Bo Allan, who as a junior looked far more natural playing down back as well.

Now, in the future anyone or more of those three kids could push in to the midfield, similar to an Elliot Yeo career, but they need game time now, playing down back to develop.

Brining in Starcevich creates a bit of a log jam in defence, and with those three kids already on the books, West Coast really need a small/medium skillful and pacey rebound defender, who can quarterback a game.

Dont forget that bringing in an FA will also impact the compensation you get for losing an FA.

In this instance, going with your band 1 return for OA, bringing Starchevich in as an FA would change the compo down to an end of round selection!
Which is why Obeanie1 suggested WC trade for Starcevich in his initial post.

Hough can push up the ground. Was a mid/wing pre-draft.

We won't be outbidding you. Our carrot is playing in finals and a long contract with reasonable $ (anywhere from 750 to 900) for security. The long contract will ensure we're giving him the time to get his body right and take the role we've pencilled in for him in the forward line.

If he wants premium $ multi-year contract (say 1 million+), he would sign up with Eagles. No brainer, we just can't compete with you on cap space.

Starcevich was an inside mid pre-draft. Everyone at the Lions gave up the idea of Starcevich playing mid at AFL level a long time ago.

What kids were in their pre-AFL days doesn't always correlate to where they fit best at AFL level.

Yeah but Hough's actually played mid/wing in his first year and was quite good. Ended up going back a bit out of necessity and shone there also.

Fair enough.

Still, do you want to be trading for Starcevich, when he's not really a need, you have his position covered, and he might be taking playing time away from some of your own kids?

Not really but if it gives us more positional flexibility to try young players in other roles, it's not a bad thing.

I would involve Starcevich into an Oscar Allen deal if I was the Eagles. Only 25 and will win a few All Australians by the end of his career. Seriously good footballer.

He's a gun, premiership-winning player in an age bracket we're lacking in, who we can get for free.

Can't get for free. you're better off trading for him.
If he moves for free I think it'll dilute your Oscar Allen compo pick.

the position starcevich plays isnt recognised by all australian selectors

That's if Allen leaves. And Starcevich, I guess.
Threads about Allen mate. If you want to extrapolate on getting Starcevich without mentioning anything about Allen - may be it belongs in a different spot.

You just signed Owies and Baker. You'll finish 12th so the compo won't be so impressive, especially with the bids predicted. You'll ask for all 3 firsts and it will be glorious.
I imagine we'd want higher draft picks than that.

3 first rounders around pick 20 doesn't sound very appealing, plus Brisbane would want to retain them for any academy picks coming up.

Doubt we finish above 16th also, tbh but we'll see. I expect all teams, other than Richmond, to improve, so whilst I think we'll win more games and have a better ladder %, so will the others around us.

I prefer my truth.
