I agree. It's a stupid distinction and clubs are forced to do nonsensical stuff as there are mandates on number of rookie vs main list guys and rookies have salary cap exemptions. I can't see a single advantage or purpose of them being categorised differently.

Would be a good question for Gettable.

The distinction is that the rookies can begin on a one year contract, unlike the draftees. So it may be an AFLPA thing to not want too many picked up that way, but not sure why there are incentives in salary cap, which actually encourages you to have 6 that are listed separately that were picked up in that way. Perhaps it's to encourage multiple pathways to the AFL, but it seems to be the same blokes as would have been picked up previously?

That was the original intent of Cat A - to encourage "non-traditional" pathways. Not sure it is needed now.

Nail on the head.
It's a whacked out system.
It's meant to encourage those thats never been on a list, getting an opportunity; but clubs have exploited it over the years to either pick up ex afl players, or delist and put your senior players on the rookie list as a list management tool

I get surprised when they make changes to rookie list rules - like they've done this year by allowing an extra year on the rookie list. If they're reviewing it, how does the review never just say - scrap it.

We can't just move him there. That was a temporary rule when they cut senior lists due to covid, but that's gone. You have to add rookies through rookie draft, SSP or MSD, which means delisting.
Fair enough - thanks

I haven't seen enough of Big O to make enough assessment on him.
I have seen him take a couple of really good grabs. Has some speed for his size.
Could he develop into a forward and relief ruck?
It'd be great to develop Oscar and Illiro as a dynamic 1-2 punch!

I think we'll see both Oscar and Illro work on their forward craft, so they can alternate between forward and ruck, like Cameron/Cox. We seem to like that dynamnic

I'm really hoping so. From the small sample size I've seen so far, they look like really good finds for the clubs future!

Didn't have his ideal year he would have liked, but has shown good signs in the games he has played. Came to pre-season with much more muscle in his upper body. I expect that will continue when we resume in november.
