The big umpiring * up was when owies got done holding the ball. Aish took advantage and hit up a bloke on the wing - umpire brings it back. 9 points up, mark on the wing and that was game over.

Exactly. Resulted in the Curnow goal because they brought it back for no reason, gave Carlton time to get back and force Freo to kick to a contest when they’d already had an uncontested mark upfield.

Awful umpiring, however that dropped mark by the Freo defender at the end was a shocker, probably would’ve won the game if he marks that.

I thought Treacy’s “half-volley” was a mark and then the follow-up was an unpaid mark too!

It was really good awareness by Aish. I thought when he was kicking, what are you doing, because it looked rush and was his choice to take advantage not the umpires - that's the rule.

exactly, it's so bizarre. how is it even in question ..player's choice, it was almost instantaneous (no delay), it has to be PLAY-ON

something needs to change with these mechanical assessments of free kicks...
- the tugging of jumpers which is mostly minor and have no effect
- the raking in of balls by players on the ground when the opposing players on top actively stop the ball coming out
- ignoring push in the back on all occasions except when the player in front lets themselves fall forward.

The assessments of the free kicks by the umpires have no feel for the game and are based on things that can be ticked off by their supervisors.

You can now add players leading with their heads into packs....and the game today was full of it...it's become the norm and will get even worse now that jack is going to get frees. It would be an irony if this rewarded behaviour results in a player breaking their neck

The hand resting on the opponent's tummy while in no way impeding his attack on the ball is today's equivalent of the insane hands gently touching the back rule a few years ago. Both are utterly senseless and exhibit an astounding lack of feel for our game.

Surely, we can trust umpires to make a subjective decision as to whether the forward was actually impeded by the hand or arm across his stomach. We do that with shoves in the back now after ditching that infuriating hands in the back rubbish. The same applies to jumper tugs. Some are so minimal and ineffectual and are literally a momentary positioning move by the defender when they engage. On many occasions the forward who gets the free doesn't even know he was infringed.

The umpiring this year has been terrible. So many tiggy touchwood frees and it truly feels as if Umpires are trying to justify their presence on the field. The whistle never stops blowing these days, especially after marking contests. Let them wrestle and test their opponent's strength! Genuine shoves and blatant jumper grabbing will always be free kicks but the incidental crap should be ignored.

I'm happy to see the Blues up there undefeated and growing more arrogant and cockier by the week. I like being the underdog or even better, considered to be an also ran. I think that's the role the Pies have relished for as long as the club has existed. Shove it up the haters and doubters. Pies.

(Please start by beating the bloody Hawks tomorrow!)

It deflected a mile. Then the ump gets his feelings hurt and decides to finish the game with a dissent free kick.

Got paid an auto-goal against, for doing the umpires’ jobs for them and more competently.

Domie, it seems to me that those in charge of umpiring want a supposedly " objective" method to assess free kicks on a tick box kind of arrangement...

And the other aspect that I didnt mention in my first post, is that there cant be too many free kicks. So this has resulted in the jumper tugs being paid, but whole classes of free kicks like push in the back are ignored. THis is even worse now that the "deliberate" free kick has been called more. Ridiculously, it shouldn't be a free kick now. It should be based on last one to kick the ball if the sport wants to use it. The adjudications on whether a player has meant or not meant to get the ball out are just a toss of a coin.

I dont worry too much about umpiring but i'm sure you almost as frustrated as you were the days of barlett and baldock...

Khamis was the one i wanted us to land in the last trade period ..OOC, therefore cheap; super athletic, can play, certainly can launch and stacks of further upside as intercepting & rebounding defender. 190 cms; 85 kgs

has only signed a 1-yr (2024) at the Dogs

Longmuir gave us a great recipe to beat Carlton, man on man coming out of their back 50 and they can’t get it through, they are too slow and not good enough by foot. (Saad the exception - you lock him down with someone)
