Lol at anyone giving a fu** to melt at this. A squad with 17.5 healthy players isn’t 3-0 to start the season, imagine my shock.

You all thought we’d suck long before the injuries hit, and we all thought we’d really suck then. Then the Covid hit.

Covid and injuries might cost us a couple of wins we’d have snuck home with otherwise, like Gold Coast and North. Bring on a good pick.

Have a melt lads, always good times, but imagine being actually worked up that half a football team isn’t playing champagne footy.
Honestly, just let people have a melt if they want to.
Maybe this is their one chance a week to let their frustrations out and vent.

Positives for me - Thought SPS looked good anytime he went on the ball (and should play there more fitness allowing). Darling looked a heap better, McGovern mostly played pretty well. Nic Nat seems to be getting some form back.

Negatives - Reverted back to our terrible game style that doesn't work anymore. Lack of intent by a hell of a lot of the team.

I think the feeling is that even accounting for Covid/injuries the team we had out there should be better than what they put out tonight. The bar was set low and they walked under it with ease.
This. Hurn and JK are 35 years old and chasing players younger teammates aren't. At other times, three or four players are chasing the ball handler. Naish has come in as a top up and demonstrated better game awareness than players that have been our list for years. I don't think anyone can begrudge rusty skills or a lack of cohesion but some of the decision making and skill execution of experienced players pales in comparison to what a bunch of top up players put up last week.

Yeah. Around half today’s side was B22 in our premiership season, a few more like Petch and Nelson played in wins during that year. It wasn’t that weak a side. Freo were missing 5-6 B22 players too.
The guys that were best 22 out there today are mostly the footsoldier types like Redden and Gaff. You cant win games with them leading. Most of our stars/X factor are out.

Our midfield today was WAFL grade. Petch and Nelson are basically fringe players. Kennedy is cooked also.

Positive
-Brady Hough tried
-McGovern and Hurn at least tried
-Nelson's first half tagging job
-30 seconds to start the third term

Negatives
-73 points from turnovers, diabolical skills and decision making
-Nelson's second half, like Hutchings before him shouldn't be in the team if he's not playing a defensive role
-Jones, SPS, Ryan are our most damaging players and got nowhere near it enough

From an equity perspective many got to see live what it's usually like watching the eagles in Sydney.
Perhaps the game will start to shine a light on the fact that the club may have cash but doesnt have toughness of footy smarts. The game plan hasn't moved, we repeatedly make the same mistakes, young players havent improved at all from last year, many older players are too comfortable and need to be held accountable.

People say that but then also say that Gaff, Hurn, Kennedy, Nelson, Petch etc are done. So are they B22 and proof we’re at our strongest, or are they trash that needs to go even if we get no picks back?

People say don’t live off past glories when it comes to Simmo winning us a flag but the fact that the players that were good for us five years ago are still playing is proof that we should be flying?

Anyone who didn’t think this was going to be a decidedly average season in November is naive, and anyone who didn’t think this was going to be a historically bad season in the build up to Round 1 needs to be told the truth about the tooth fairy and Santa Claus.

The team looked like they’d barely met today, and that’s probably to do with the fact that for the last three weeks they’ve barely been allowed in the same venue. Effort was shit so sure, get fired up about the effort, but melting over a team of supplementary picks is not worth anyone’s energy.

Look if I am the club and I am talking to my strength and conditioning guys and they tell me I can have a team full of brutes due to heavy weight lifting or a team full of marathon running looking guys due to a heavy running focus but I can't have both, give me the brutes

So what if they can't run out a game. We put seemingly all our focus into running atm and we can't run out a game as it is

Give me a bunch of explosive meatheads who can win a one on one, a contested ball and can crush the opposition in a tackle

Sick of seeing our midfielders (with the exception of Yeo) continually get out muscled around stoppages week in, week out

Positives:
Darling had better timing. Bodes nicely that he could build back into it.

Tag worked well at silencing Brayshaw, until we went away from it at half time due to being six goals down. That’s an option once the midfield is Shuey, Kelly, Yeo not West, Naish, Redden and there’s actually a chance the others mid could make it count.

Gov and Hurn did enough to make me feel like they’ll be ok, Gov in particular. Two nice weeks in a row from him.

Happy that Pearce is ok, **** I thought he was done again when he went down with that look on his face. Always seemed a nice guy and has had a shocking run at it.

I’ve liked 80% of Foley’s game each week this season, so if he can cut out the hilarious 20% turnovers he might be a good option.

Three top 20 picks, cheers Port.

Negatives:
Got thumped
Listened to Pav butcher the English language as badly as we butcher handballing to a teammate.
Going to have to put up with a bunch of people who said for months how shit we’d be at full strength complain that we’re shit at half strength.

3 top 20 picks? Please tell me we're death riding Port?

Who are you, and what have you done with ep2018??

Probably in a good mood after his team had a massive win. 😂

That’s fair. People are entitled to.

I suppose what I can’t understand is people who watch us when we have genuinely high expectations, and melt that we don’t win by enough or that god forbid we lose, and then when we have unbelievably low expectations still melt that we’re terrible.

Just seems like find a new hobby if success and joy can only be exist in the rarest of rare circumstances, that is the team you support happening to be a fantastic team in a given year.

That was very little fun at all. There was about four passages of play that were good, and a tiny number of signs that could be built upon, so let’s not pretend it was fun or good or inspiring.

But like…ah well. What we’re watching now is not reflective of who the Eagles wanted to be this year, which I doubt we’ll see due to availability, and it’s not reflective of who we’re going to be as they undertake a rebuild with hopefully three top 20/25 picks.

We’re looking at a construction site. Sometimes the builders do a shit job and sometimes they don’t even turn up at all. Turning up to watch it and complaining that the building isn’t done yet seems like a waste of energy.

Yeah it's been a disastrous start to the season, but it looks like we're just continuing last year's trajectory of timid, joyless footy where we alternate between defending patches of grass and bombing it long to giant packs on the boundary line. It's hard to tell where Kennedy and Darling are at; peak Lockett and Carey would struggle to get a kick in this side.
We'll be back, and sooner rather than later. But for now, fold the club.

Personally ive never understood why we dont look at picking up a few tackling coaches from rugby. At least they'd teach us how to stick an effective tackle.

A team that looks like they have barely met would be explainable except apart from naish, dixon, sps , west and hough have all been together for at least 2 preseasons and aside from west and hough have had multiple pre seasons at other clubs so they aren’t kids…

Who gives a squirt if nelson, langdon, petch, or rotham gets chopped and we get nothing back??? We would get nothing just like brander because they aren’t any good.. at the eagles you get rewarded for that and for the most cases you get 2 or more years to prove what everyone already knows.

When these guys go back to the wafl how many of these jokers actually dominate multiple games to earn selection.. they are mostly towelled up by wafl players week in week out.

I’ve only seen patches of the game

+Hurn
That’s it

But..

I’ll take these losses. This season. If it means we finally accept right now the club has been on the wrong path. The Kelly trade was a bad idea, I get why, but it was bad.
We lost our best defender to a premature retirement. Also unforseeable

But having no young players (Oscar Allen excluded) showing any sort of X factor means the only way up is to blood some youth, and accept our window is shut. I don’t think the club have even accepted it yet. Hopefully in that process we find some more gems

You’ve missed my point entirely, like an Eagles midfielder trying to handball for a teammate.

You’re saying Petch, Nelson, Rotham etc are crap. Other people are saying our team wasn’t that depleted, it had Petch, Nelson, Rotham in it.

Can’t be both. And if it is, as in they’re crap but also best 22, then lower your expectations for the season folks.

Seasons over already. We will improve steadily in the second half of the year and fall around 13th, although we could win a spoon and that's a better result. Three catastrophic pre seasons in a row now.
Last year 13th got 8 wins. Can you really see us getting anywhere near 8 wins? 4 would be a miracle.

I mean realistically not many teams are going to be able to challenge for the flag this year so may as well crash and burn for picks.

Melbourne Dogs or Lions only 3 in it I reckon.

Hoping Essendon dont win a final so the "how many days since Essendon have won a final" page continues.

For me, I think a lot of the issues today can be explained by injuries and covid and especially, having to make the most and 3rd most changes in AFL history in consecutive weeks. I think people here are underestimating how hard implementing a new game plan is whilst the team is changing massively.

The disappointment for me is that we clearly planned this year to have one last swing at it with this core, and I still think with our best 22 and some luck we could have challenged, but due to the above issues, a lot outside our control, the season will be long gone well before we get a chance to see something resembling our best 22 playing at their best.

Its pretty simple. their crap… if they never saw another eagles jumper for eternity it would be to soon but we knew they were crap last year and the year before.. why they hang onto these guys is baffling to say the least.

We have played some of the worst teams in a the comp and look a step below them.

If we can't hit 15 meter kicks under no pressure then we are cooked, skill errors like that aren't top up player issues. They are fundamental skill and gameplan errors.

Nothing positive to take out of the game and looking like the year and with our best players being our older brigade (Hurn, Redden, Nic, JK) where is the imporvement coming from in the next 3 years. That is what really scares me.

I dunno, maybe some people enjoy being emotionally invested in the team, whatever emotion that brings out.
A lot healthier to let it out here than in other ways.
Your building site analogy is a good one, plenty of questions (at least in my mind) over whether we've employed the right architect, whether the blueprints we're working off are the right ones and if we have the right tradesmen on site.
I didn't expect to be good this year, I really enjoyed the first couple of weeks because the guys we had out there for the most part put in a massive effort and we saw plenty of positive glimpses from some of the younger & new guys. Today however was more like how we ended last season, lack of effort, boring stale game plan, not much to hang our hopes on for the future came out of it.
