Now I ask many questions on here and this is one I am yet to receive an answer to.

For the sake of this argument I will say that Macca is still our coach in 2017 or has been replaced it is irrelevant to this question

How can anyone seriously think out list will be finals material in 2017?

Take Boyd Morris Gia Cooney Murphy Goodes out of the list due to retirement

Griffen and Mino both 30ish

Higgins Dickson and co still running around as average AFL players at best.

Smith Hrovat Dalhaus honeychurch all tiny

How can this list seriously compete to make final let alone contend for a flag?

Now I know we will have inclusions but there is no way we will be able to attract any serious mature talent the way we are going so it will be youth who is topping up list and AGAIN that takes time so can anyone actually tell me why they are so confident ?

I simply don't see it guys

I love how you're simply removing the development of guys like Stringer, J-Mac, Libba, Bonts, Wood and Roughy from the equation.

I never removed anything and clearly development will happen BUT ENOUGH TO REPLACE WHAT WE LOSE ?

So you believe the kids we have are enough to cover these losses do you ?? And then the kids we don't have yet will have to push us up futher and be better than the group of kids we already have to make this happen.

Ie : the group you mention replace the older players and are as good or better and then the youngsters coming in have to be better than the ones now or we cannot go forward can we?

And you can chuck in Grant and Crameri

I think it will, I think they are signs even this year. Easton Wood is playing to a level a don't think I ever thought he'd reach. I think you can see the abillity of guys like Jake and Bonts. I think the most important thing is that these guys start to win though

Mate you are calling Smith Tiny.
He is 181cm and 84kg he may be short but he is not small.
Stop just looking at heights and look at what they bring to the table and where they play

Well he looks a lot smaller than that but let's say he is, now I feel much better about our hopes

Clay Smith is not 6 feet tall

Well he looks a lot smaller than that but let's say he is, now I feel much better about our hopes

Clay Smith is not 6 feet tall
But he doesnt need to be, thats not his role. He is a medium sized player with a bit of weight behind him which will hurt more than a few opposition players.
You need to look at the list as a whole, along with the positions they are expected to play before catorgasing (think i mispelt that) them as big or small

Our 2014 list looking ahead to 2017 - I don't have a crystal ball, but I have one of those magic 8 balls which works every now and again, so you all should listen to me :p Apologies for the long-windedness of the post, but offering a very basic thought on each player on the list.

1. Grant - key for us up forward, versatile, intelligent and mucks up opposition's structure.
2. Murphy - gone, but not for lack of form. Father Time claims another.
3. Wallis - playing the same role as Liberatore once the coaching panel figures out that's where he's at his most damaging best
4. Bontempelli - unbearable for opposition, composure and vision second to none and height makes him a difficult match-up.
5. Boyd - gone, maintained his best accumulating form right up to the end but delisted in a Cross-like fashion. We won't know what we've got til it's gone.
6. Dahlhaus - Will be very, very good. Hardest player in the comp of his size, reads the play very well and finds the goals, and will never leave.
7. Higgins - gone, free agency will claim him eventually and he'll play an excellent role in another team's flag tilt. Hope I'm wrong, he does love the club.
8. Crameri - leading goalkicker for 4th year in a row, outstrips his Essendon efforts and provides a versatile option, combining well with Jones and Grant.
9. Stringer - Star. Will regain his pace and maintain his explosiveness for longer in games, and on occasion will tear teams apart. Potential for Brownlow.
10. Wood - will be more than serviceable for a few years, and could leave to plug a hole elsewhere but likely won't.
11. Macrae - will maintain his current rate of possession but be far more damaging and less prone to error.
12. Williams - gone, as soon as the end of this year. Sorry Tommy, and I'm shattered you didn't get to make more of a fist of it. Body let you down.
13. Giansiracusa - gone. Duh. Forward coach.
14. Smith - absolute maniac, and will only get better. Disposal has noticeably improved already and may find him swapping for forward role with Bonts.
15. Tutt - gone. Got all the tools and none of the confidence. Disappointing. Exactly what we need, but doesn't believe in himself.
16. Griffen - won't be captain but will still be at his best - reckon he won't be far off being finished though, mentally will probably have had enough.
17. Cooney - gone, whether his knee sends him off into the sunset or he elects to Lake it and help a team to a flag. Wouldn't begrudge that at all.
18. Roberts - a point of genuine confusion for me. Deserved to play last week and didn't. Love his attitude and personality, hope he makes it.
19. Jones - get the hell off his back. Supply is rubbish and he's been thrown to the wolves. Back him, he'll gain some confidence and he'll be dependable.
20. Pearce - gone. McCartney rated his chances at start of year but injury throws him off massively, with Wood & JJ likely for his role.
21. Liberatore - Brownlow Medallist. Stoppage work impeccable, tough as teak and potential captain, as quiet as he is. Footballer's footballer.
22. Honeychurch - yet to debut, but he will play 200 games for us. Loyal, tough, loves a scrap and addresses his deficiencies with smart footy.
23. Roughead - will be a co or vice captain, if not captain himself. Glad he's so integral to us on the last line of defense.
24. Hrovat - another captaincy candidate but not by then. Addresses his lack of height with great vision and composure. A good footballer, above all.
25. Stevens - He's getting better and can hurt on the scoreboard. His contribution each week may be underrated. Seems to really enjoy being at the Dogs.
26. Hunter - Could be anything really. Been handy this season in his second year, hope he can go to another level when he gets more midfield chances.
27. Minson - probably gone. Ruckmen don't have a huge window of dominating to retirement and his impact up forward isn't huge.
28. Prudden - Who knows? VitalDread can tell me what he'll be in 3 years.
29. Dickson - Think he could be very good for us but never seems to string together good games even at his age. Umming and aahing over him, really.
30. Howard - Gone. This year. Doesn't look interested at VFL level, likely has the mindset of being finished. Goodbye.
31. Young - Unsure. Depends who we take in first round this year, as Roughead and Talia will be pillars for a decade.
32. Talia - Will be in FB/CHB or even third tall KPD role for next decade. Pretty excited by the run he could generate with his accumulating ability.
33. Darley - Who knows. Haven't seen enough of him at VFL level to make a call but as far as I know hasn't stood out.
34. Greenwood - Goodbye, solid and nothing more at VFL level and probably have an abundance of his sort of player, but he's the least skilled of the lot.
36. Fuller - Probably gone, looks out of his depth but not willing to make a definitive call until he's had sufficient time to adjust. Need his type.
38. Morris - Wants to play on for a while yet. As long as he's in this sort of form, why the hell not? Great footballer and man.
39. Johannisen - Didn't look poor tonight as he did in his first 3 games. If he can get back to form of early 2013, will be a star. Potential trade bait, though.
42. Picken - Will still be performing his role week-in, week-out until the day he retires or gets the chop. Love his attitude and work ethic.
43. Redpath - gone in the big rookie clean-out. Project player that just wasn't good enough, glad we kept him around so he could have a fair crack.
44. Goodes - gone at the end of this year, I'd think, will probably take up a role with the club and continue at Footscray. Like him, but limited footballer.
45. Campbell - Not totally sold, but has shown a lot more than plenty of ruckmen of his age, and up forward too.
46. Jong - will likely get an upgrade and has played a variety of roles this year, struggling and performing well at times. Don't know what to make of him.
47. Austin - Not sure if he lasts as depth - won't if we plan to pick up a KPD in first round. Would rather spend rookie spot on an investment player.
49. Cordy - Who knows? Need him with Wilbur winding down and Campbell probably not ready to assume first ruck duties. The pair rotating is ideal.

The thing I don't understand is that, on one hand, you insinuate in other threads that McCartney inherited a list that was bound for glory and that his failure to win is a testament to him being a bad coach.

Then on the other hand, we get this thread, which seems to insinuate that our list is rubbish and that McCartney is responsible for it.

You can't have it both ways mate.

Go through your list again when you've woken from your dream. You've over rated so many players it's not funny. The numbers of players you claim will 'make it' is far from the mark.

Are u for real...he was spot on with the majority of his opinion on players.

People were saying the same about our list in the early mid 2000s, but all of a sudden the 99? draft group all just clicked. We managed to cover West, Grant, Smith and others that people said we never would be able to. But I guess it's hard to have vision when you only focus and carry on about all the negatives.

I've gone over the list with a fairly realistic eye. None of what I said was in hope.
Why don't you start to offer more opinions of your own on this board instead of just replying to other people's posts in a negative manner? It's boring.

Because he's probably TonyDean and that's the type of person he is.

WHERE HAVE I EVER INSINUATED THAT OUR LIST IS BOUND FOR GLORY?? That is complete bs I have never ever said that.

And I'm not insinuated I'm stating as fact that the list that goes around in 2017 will be Macca if he is still around. That will be 6 years to turn a list over, that is an eternity on football and no matter what the base should've possible

How can you take an op seriously that discounts a players ability just because he deems them to be "tiny."

There's some sharp list analysis right there.

Bout as sharp as you

The point being made was that it is impossible to carry 4/5 blokes that are as small as those guys are

So instead of attempting to pick one point actually respond instead of ATTEMPTING to be clever

I'm glad this thread was started because after our failure to improve this year (a fact proven by not winning the winable games we should have recently) I'm starting to wonder about the quality of our future list especially when we lose Murphy, Boyd, Cooney & Morris (?).

I'm sick of people claiming everyone is negative because they are simply worrying about where we are going.

Call me negative then.

Some of these boys just don't look like they are up to winning a flag (and isn't that why we're here?).

I know I'm going to get people screaming by using this poor fellow as an example. Jones. You ask me to get off his back. If he needs people to get off his back he REALLY isn't premiership material. We need some ammo with grunt. If poor little Jonesy wonesy has a confidence problem he's simply not the type of player that's going to get you where we want to go. Now maybe people are right about delivery into the forward line. If you are, you are spouting negatives yourself, so don't pick on people who want to critique the playing group because they want to see a FUTURE.

Last year I was laughing at the saints because of their lack of personnell going forward and thinking how much further ahead of them we were. Now I'm not so sure (and before you quote their thumping this week, wait until we play the Hawks thanks).

I'm sorry but at the moment it's worrying. This is not being NEGATIVE - thinking of how we can make changes to improve is being POSITIVE.

my take

1. Grant - if he continues with building his confidence and desire - he will be ther.
2. Murphy - gone
3. Wallis - playing a hard tagging role
4. Bontempelli - Not sure, but hopefully he has what everyone thinks he has to make it at the level
5. Boyd - gone
6. Dahlhaus - Will be there
7. Higgins - Still there
8. Crameri - playing a Gia type role if he is still there
9. Stringer - probably
10. Wood - might still be there
11. Macrae - should be there
12. Williams - gone,
13. Giansiracusa - gone
14. Smith - hard to say. very inconsistent
15. Tutt - gone.
16. Griffen - still there, but older
17. Cooney - gone, knee will give way
18. Roberts - a KPD with us or someone else
19. Jones - Dont think Jones will improve that much
20. Pearce - gone.
21. Liberatore - still there
22. Honeychurch - still there
23. Roughead - KPD - I hope he stays with us, I can see Hawks taking a crack at him
24. Hrovat - Dont think he will be there.
25. Stevens - Borderline
26. Hunter - will be there
27. Minson - maybe like Hudson, still playing when he can
28. Prudden - not sure. not tried in the seniors yet
29. Dickson - A good VFL player bt I dont think he is a long term goal prospect for us
30. Howard - Gone.
31. Young - A depth player
32. Talia - A Depth player
33. Darley - untried. hard to say
34. Greenwood - gone
36. Fuller - untried. hard to say.
38. Morris - Body would have given way by then.
39. Johannisen - I dont see him staying with us, we'll offload him
42. Picken - Will stay
43. Redpath - VFL player, delisted from seniors
44. Goodes - gone this year, too inconsistent
45. Campbell - may be there as #2 ruck
46. Jong - I think McCartney will persist
47. Austin - Gone. Great kid, but not taking his chances. will be delisted to the VFL
49. Cordy - not sure, maybe gone for not stepping up

So based on my list predictions, we are a long way off and it wont be till 2018-2020 that we might be pushing again

49. Cordy - Who knows? Need him with Wilbur winding down and Campbell probably not ready to assume first ruck duties. The pair rotating is ideal.

Good response mate at least you had a crack at a answer but your responses don't really answer my question.
But u shall respond in kind

1- should be handy if stays uninjured
2- gone
3- trade bait
4- 200 gamer
5- gone
6- handy but never a star
7- still jogging half pace
8- more than handy
9- very important
10- hopefully improvement continues
11- gun if we can keep him
12- who's knows??
13- gone
14- very handy squad player
15- not good enough
16- still our best player
17- knees will end it
18- will he ever get a chance?
19- still be our whipping boy
20- squad player
21- our second best player
22- looks promising
23- forward or back? Pretty important simply due to size
24- personally cannot understand how you can think he may ever be captain and he played one game?? Over rated? Maybe
25- every team needs blokes like this
26- gun
27- gone due to over work by tucking by himself 5 years
28- ????
29- not good enough if he still on list proves we haven't gone forward
30- gone thank god
31- squad depth
32- will leave and turn up at another team and be very good
33- possibly Gilbee/Murphy replacement across half back
34- ????
36- another horrible waste of a pick
38- probably still playing due to lack of tall kids coming thru
39- trade bait that will pop up elsewhere and be a player
42- still doing it week in week out
43- will make it at another club when given a chance. Big blokes with speed like him don't exist
44- gone
45- ummmmm ???
46- personally I think this bloke is the barometer of our list. If he still on it we are no good, he isn't up to it and will not make it.
47- gone
49- probably still in list not getting a chance so we get his brother
