because clearly David Koch has too much ego and pride in himself. The fact he nominated so early Ken will be a 10 year coach under his reign says it all about his bias and poor judgement. It also shows the shallowness of his business acumen. One thing I have learnt in running a business for 17 years, don’t get personal with employees, don’t make big promises as things change rapidly.

The escalation of commitment

If it’s only applied to AFL assisted clubs, it gives the power clubs an advantage when looking for a coach.
Isn't it the other way round? AFL assisted clubs only have a liability for 6 months salary, if they sack their coach a year or two early, whereas as the unassisted club have to make a 100% payout.

I read the article one of our posters posted about this 6 month settlement and the view was that it would deter luring the next best coach to take on the job because of less security, particularly if the coach needs to move state for the position. It seemed to make sense.

If you're offered two otherwise identical contracts, would you prefer the one with a max 6-month payout or the one with a 100% payout?

Sure, but if you are signing a new contract, and are an ex AFL coach it's probably for 4 years, and you are likely to be guaranteed 3 years in the job. If he balks because of the prospect of not lasting much more than a year, then do you want him as your coach? That's not a very confident person.

If you are a young coach it will probably be a factor, but then again, those rules probably have a sunset clause for when the pandemic ends.

It would come down to the individual and their circumstances but if this 6 month settlement condition was in when KT first approached Hinkley, given Hinkley had been unsuccessful three times before to the point of not wanting to be panelled then I reckon his desparation makes him grab the chance to be a senior coach. A coach that is sought after by Vic clubs and lives in Vic is likely to bypass us for a worse Vic club.

Sure but a coach sought by Vic clubs and lives in Victoria is likely to pick a Vic club because if the money is similar, why make such a big disruptive change if you have a wife and kids to consider? There would have to be a massive disparity between Port's and the Vic club's list to choose Port

I don't know how many offers Malthouse got at the end of 1989 to coach small Vic clubs, but the prospect of taking over an effective state team in WCE would have been very attractive. WCE weren't a rich club in 1989, they had $13mil debt when interest rates got to 20%, which would probably be equal to $30-$40m today. They also weren't the juggernaut off field like they have been since the iron ore China driven mining boom started in 2003.

Contrary to popular belief I actually think vossy would’ve been the first assistant from within that I would’ve backed for next senior coach. Schofield and Montgomery get all the love, not exactly sure why but I would’ve picked Voss ahead of those two.

Will be a good appointment for Collingwood. Surely a better fit than someone like choco or even don pyke.

Schofield has runs on the board - 3 WAFL flags and 2 x runner up. Not bad in 6 years.

The board gave Hinkley an extra 2 years because we got very close last year and they took the optimistic approach that the club was close and didn't want the club/Hinkley to have any distraction to take away from that premiership push. Whilst I haven't completely given up in the year just yet, when it becomes completely apparent that we are not making the Grand Final this year Hinkley needs to be moved on.

The fact he was whingeing about people asking him about not beating top 4 sides after the Sydney and Hawthorn game, suggests his new contract has a lot more than the make finals once in 3 years clause, that he got after Koch raced to his home to re-sign him, the weekend after the WCE elimination final loss in 2017.

Yep and outside of Tredrea's insinuations there hasn't been past players declaring it publicly that I've heard. If a couple of players expressed their opposing view publicly I would like to know who. What's your problem with that?
Just don’t think it a big statement.

Hinkley is a grown man, being paid as a professional.

Pro coaches are expected to take ‘distractions’ in their stride.

The only thing Hinkley takes in his strides is … you guessed it.

Time to revisit this thread ken is on borrowed time who could we get for 2023. Should we just offer 2023 to Clarko now. Koch you owe us make the call
