Reported in the Hun this morning. Picks 9 & 24 was the official offer from the Roos to get Rawlings Snr.

More than a fair offer IMO for a player of J Rawling's age and ability. Pick 9 and a player (rumoured to be Jones) as 'leaked' during the week would've been paying way over the odds.

This reconfirms my initial suspicion that Nth Melb acted properly throughout protecting the interests of the NMFC (as Hawthorn & Footscray will say they did for themselves), and didn't offer too much to attract a 26 year old player who has played 1 year of elite standard football.

....the debate continues......

The offer of pick 9 and 24 was to Essendon really. They were going to then give Bolton to Hawthorn and we would receive Rawlings.
The deal collapsed because Essendon sunddenly decided that Bolton was worth 2 first round picks.
After this Sheeds then decided that Bolton was actually needed and that Jacobs could go....as long as the neccarssary though unreasonable 2 first round selections were received.
North Melbourne never had a hope of finding another high selection so the Dogs entered the picture with pick 6 and Alvey which Sheeds of course accepted.
IMO Essendon are the big winners in the deal, closely followed by the Dogs and then Hawthorn.
Jacobs although not a gun, is at least some compensation for the loss of Rawlings unlike what Port receive.

Agree Lidge, although I'm really surprised we couldn't get over the line with those first two picks plus a fringe player that had limited chances at North but would have been of use to another club - whther the Hawks went for Baird, or whether Sheedy wanted to give Shannon Motlop a chance, you would have thought someone somewhere would have thought that package was good enough to then be able to to give Essendon what they wanted, or give the Hawks what they wanted etc.

I think the people that have really shafted us are Essendon - their initial demand of two first round draft picks for Bolton is a bit much. The Doggies were desparate and were always going to do whatever they can - I challenge any club that is struggling on the field and off it the way they are to not employ similar tactics. It was Essendon that could have not been such arseh0les.

In effect we were offering pick 9 & 24 for Jacobs. That is ridiculous. Essendon screwed both Hawthorn and the Bulldogs. I'm glad we werent part of that deal.

I'm happy that the Dons didn't accept our part of the deal.

I still reckon that (in effect) giving away our first two draft picks for Rawlings was too much.

100% agree.

I agree and hold nothing against these clubs. Hate 'em anyway.
Desperate clubs do desperate things. I'm glad North have signed Jnr and have been wise NOT to trade CJ who is HARDER at it than Jade Rawlings IMO.
Just need CMcK to re-ignite and give us 'Vintage Corey' ...everyone will forget that the Rawlings deal fell though if our current crop of juniors STEP up !

It sems clear that the only way we would have been able to beat this deal was to get a pick higher than 6 for Essendon - it cost the Dogs Nathan Brown to get pick 6 in their pockets, god knows who we would have had to give away to get a better pick than 6 from Melbourne, Bulldogs or Carlton. Jacobs certainly not worth it, Rawlings pretty certainly not worth it either.

I agree as well. Hawthorn rated Rawlings more than we did. For a trade one of us had to lose. They were already losers because their player was walking out. We had no one who wanted to leave or who we wanted to flick. Best to be happy with the return of McKernan. Our young players will be better after the game time they received last year and the team will continue to improve.

Firstly, in a similar vien to Windsock's crack on the trade board on Friday, i am still not convinced that the reason neither Hawthorn and effectively Essendon eventually railroaded the trade was that they were fearful of bolstering a team that they see as being very close to them in terms of talent and ladder positioning.

Keep in mind our recent records. We've had a few tight contests with both clubs of late and they might have viewed us getting Rawlings in similar ways that Port Adelaide viewed Collingwood getting Nick Stevens.

But enough of my crack pot theories.

So many posters on here have been quick to hook into Harrington and co for not havin gthe skill to get the trade done.

Lets consider what it did take:

The Bulldogs have effectively traded Nathan Bown (pick 6 which they got from Richmond for him) and a handy player who they gave their word to that he'd be recontracted after his knee injury earlier this year (Alvey) just for a chance at getting a Rawlings in the pre-season draft, who it should be remembered is a player who flatly knocked them back during trade time.

A bit extreme wouldn't you think?

And all thats before even contemplating the laughable situation of Hawthorn thinking that Danny "compensation" Jacobs is a suitable replacement for Rawlings.

And lets not even mention how Sheedy managed to convince either club that Jacobs was worth pick 6 and Alvey.

This is the time of year when the trade week is basically a substitute for footy itself. It feels the void and builts expectations and righlt so. A good trading week for your club makes for a better night sleep for weeks to come.

We have built our expectations up big time. There were a number of players talked about coming to North in weeks leading up to the trade week and although most of them were no world beaters it was still exciting imagining how they can make us a better side next year. Jade Rawlings was a jewel in the crown that we saw as almost the final cog in our quest for a premieship that suddenly seemed a lot closer than it did 4 weeks ago...

Was this justified? Probably not. As good as our youngsters are we are still yet to play one game where everything clicked into gear under Laidley. Carlton game was an exception but I don't think we need to read much into that demolition.

Adelaide game late last year was as close to a four quarter performance with the required level of intensity as we have seen in recent times. We won that game by only 10 points.

Let's be realistic. Let's hope that we can build our performances to that sort intensity level on week to week basis. We need to first achieve a feeling that each game we play we at least are a good chance to win, and we should feel we are favourites to win in most weeks. We had that feeling through out the 90s but definitely not the last few years.

Jade Rawlings, as good as he is, wouldn't push us to that next level IMHO. We need our young core youngsters to take that step. Petrie, Harris, Watson, Jones, Junior, Brown are the players we need to improve by 10-20%. Add Hale and McIntosh to that list.

So let's take another deep breath and convince ourselves that there is plenty to look forward to.

The good thing about the trade week is that we have potentially created a couple more grudge matches for next season. At least we as supporters would like to think so.

Spot on Shinners.
Let's not forget Leigh colbert and how much he cost us.

Let's wait and see who we get in the draft before we cry foul.
I also don't think we should be blaming the Dogs and Hawks, they were dealing with a better offer than we could provide. We were outbid, that's all there is to it.
