Voss praised Beams' running capacity in the last couple of weeks. I think it is a strength of his.

Yeah Claye is an elite runner. 14.2 beep test before he was drafted. He goes all day.

It is not necessarily a perfect sample but in the intraclub he was one who clearly got better as the match progressed. Kept his explosiveness and repeat efforts up.

This is how I think we'll line up, not how I think we should line up.

B: Golby Maguire Patfull
HB: Adcock mcKeever McGrath
C: Hanley Rockliff Rich

F: Karnezis Merrett Banfield
R: Leuenberger Redden Black
Int: Longer Polec Stiller
Sub: Beams

Sheldon, Stiller & Polkinghorne in the same senior side.
Please no, no, no, noooooooooo..........

B: McGrath, Maguire, Golby

INT: Longer, Polkinghorne, Lester
Sub: O'Brien

I basically went with how I expect the match committee to go, except I couldn't bring myself to put McKeever in. I think his pre-season has been shithouse. Leaves us short down back, but Lester on the bench provides cover.

Would have loved to put Harwood in but I think the match committee would have played him vs Essendon if he was in the frame for round 1.

Also would have liked to put McGrath up forward to address the imbalance of experience, but he seems to be locked in to a defensive role.

Not having a go or anything TBD but, are you of the opinion, that the side you have listed can beat Melbourne? Or at least matches up well with Melbourne?

*shrug*

Not sure how to answer that very high level question.

Forward line lacks height and Longer would obviously spend a good chunk of time forward and Lester is on the bench to swing forward and back as needs dictate. It's not perfect but I can't create players who don't exist.

Temped to bring Retzlaff in as a marking target outside 50 to streighten us up but as I said, I am trying to look for signs as to what the match commitee is thinking.

If your post is about Merrett playing forward, if anyone seriously expects that he isnt going to play forward in round 1, they better start mentally preparing themselves for the fact that he is.

Fair enough, for what it's worth that's pretty much how I'm expecting them to line up (Merrett included). Although, personally I can't see that side beating Melbourne. just intersted whether others shared a similar viewpoint.

Comes down to our midfield IMO. We absolutely dominated them in general play in the NAB Cup. Will take something similar for us to win.

Putting a lot of hope in Sylvia being out. Need to control Jones and Moloney. Blacky needs to have a big one too.

Forward line way too slow weevil.

Can't play two genuine rucks either. Ludicrous suggestion.

I think you overrate some of those players too...

Leppitsch... failed forward. Will be delisted at the end of the season.

Michael... couldn't even get a regular game at the Pies. That Molloy trade will haunt us for years.

Lynch... big deal, my grandmother would have looked like a star in that Fitzroy side... and we give him a ten year contract! FFS!

And who in the match committee does Bradshaw have pictures of... inconsistent and frustrating... is he a forward or back? Who the hell knows.

Does bring up the very interesting question of how that side would go in the modern day game with zones, etc.

Zones????

They would have just smashed right through the zones....:D

Code:
Johnson Michael White

Pike Leppitsch	C Scott

Akermanis	Voss (c)	Lappin

Hart Brown Power

Bradshaw	Lynch McRae

Keating, Black, B Scott

Charman, Ashcroft, Notting Sub McGrath

don't think teams get any better than that tbh, champion side.

Sorry to intrude, but where is Zorko at with regards to his injury? cheers

I think Raines has his place in the side but I think that Adcock's move into the midfield makes it potentially tougher for him to regain his spot.

It was interesting to hear Ling talk about his changed role in the modern game. He said that with the high level of structure in modern footy, it was almost impossible to tag a player all game. He said at points of the game, you simply have to hold your position in the structure and let your opponent go, trusting that your teammates will pick him up. That makes it easier for an Adcock type to play a defensive midfield role - where it isn't just about negating your opponent (which Raines excels at).

I think Raines is an excellent defensive one on one footballer. He has taken on and beaten some very good footballers. I think he is an elite runner which our side has very few of. But Adcock is obviously the superior all-round footballer. If Adcock can give 80% of what Raines delivers in a defensive capacity, then I think Raines may have a fight on his hands for a spot in the best 22 because Adcock gives a lot more in an offensive sense.

I still have Raines in my side. He's been the best tagger on our list, probably since Bushy played on ball. It is easy to forget the roles he performed well last year. But he is absolutely a flawed footballer and that means his spot in the side will always be under the microscope. A move by Adcock in the midfield has the potential to keep him in the reserves.

Good post :thumbsu:

Sadly I think they'll go with something like TBD's team, I just hope they're willing to switch it up if it obviously doesn't work.

So of our current crop of players - who would get a gurnsey in this side and which player listed would they be pushing out?

I'd put a fit Drummond in for Notting, Leuenberger in for Charman, and I'd be tempted to Redden or Rockliff in for Ashcroft. The other may edge out a Scott brother. I'm assuming that the McGrath of today comes in for McGrath of back then.

If you compared them at the same times in there careers probably quite a few.

Guys like Johnson, Michael, White, Leppitsch, Akermanis, Hart, McRae, B Scott, Keating, Charman and Notting took time to come on and had serious question marks over them early on in their careers.

Would have loved to put Harwood in but I think the match committee would have played him vs Essendon if he was in the frame for round 1.

Moving from preseason to the real deal I think there is some small chance the Scott Harding scenario might apply.

Scotty was given game after game after game to prove himself, but soon as the season ended his position in the team was reassessed and he was delisted.

Now that we are about to play for premiership points I think there is a chance they will have a look at the progress of some guys.

Despite his limitations I didn’t have so much of a problem with playing guys like Sheldon last year; there just were not a lot of other options knocking the door down.

We now have guys like Harwood who are genuinely putting their hands up I think it is getting much harder to justify.

Still think they will probably play Sheldon but would not be surprised if at some point they lose patience with him and he finds it much, much harder to get a game.

Marcus Ashcroft was an absolute elite midfielder turned rebounding HB who would have no less than 20 possessions up to 40 often. I think Rockliff would comfortably take Harts spot.
