Out of Contract Players?

Remove this Banner Ad

We all know that James Kelly and Jimmy Bartel are out of contract at seasons end.
What would you expect from Hawthorn if one of these players was to be sought in November baring in mind that the following are untouchables.
Crawford, Everitt, Mitchell, Hodge, Franklin, Roughead, Lewis, Williams, Croad, Smith, Bateman.
Your best chance of a trade would come from Ries, Dixon, Lonie, Clarke, Greene, Holland, Barker. I think that we may also trade our draft picks as we did extraordinarily well at last seasons draft.

Seriously , I heard that we have around 17 coming out of C . What happens if after building our list 7 qualitys decided nominate for NOV.
Say Bartel, Kelly,Corey,Johnson,Enright, etc all say no to the resign We lose 7 players and recieve nothing , the system is not quite right

Youd like to think that wouldnt happen given the way we are travelling.

at worst you will only lose one of these guys through trade not qutting.
I believe that Geelong would be a club that would try to get the player to his prefered club and not do a Port Adelaide with Nick Stevens and get ******** all for them.
Would love for Jimmy Bartel to be sporting the brown and gold next season.
Will give you two of Lonie, Ries, Clarke, Greene

You would do that for us? you are so kind. To think if youd given us Rawlings you may have had Tenace and Bartel. What a joke that wouldve been.

I agree , very long shot but my point not just about us , its more the system. Any club us, StKilda, anybody, could totally lose their list no recompense.
Lets say, a Carey situation happens or there is dust up between two groups within a club or there is a bit of a revolt by players or a Sneaky club or two at the bottom could undermine a club that is player rich but facilty's,money etc poor. Highly unlikely but it could happen. What about a coach leaving after having a blue within the club and incouaraging players to leave as well. Even if it was only 3 players, how good would we feel if Kelly went to Essendon, Bartel to Collingwood and Chapman to Carlton for nothing in return, it would gut us like it did when Williams,Toohey and Bolton left with Hafey and went to the Swans.(That cost us the flag in 89.Williams in that side , we win.)
Port, wanted after the Stevens situation a change to prevent this happening They thought you have put time, training, experience etc into a player and not even recieve a lowly draft pick was to unfair on clubs. They wanted , I think , a minumum second round or something like that. I've been against change to FS that would try to assess a players worth by commitee but with player's that are already in the system it would be far easier to work out a figure.

Bartel for those four would stil not get the deal done. Seriously man, think about it. If anything, maybe Franklin or Roughead but not two of those duds.

Cook said that we had only paid half our media/sponsorship money and where under the cap last year and this year we would pay the whole thing. When you think that means most players will get an increase I would say they will stay.

I trust that Cook etc have it under control.

The Spindoctor spins again. What do you think he'd say. As I understand we were around 95-97.5% , roughly speaking increase of 2.5-5% is around 150,000 to 300,000. If guys like Bartel,Kelly were on 120,000 last time you would have to think they would double this min. to around 250,000-280,000 to compete with the rampaging stupifing offers that might come from the likes of the Pies to encourage a change of club. 150,000 extra to those two and there go's the cap.Yes there is money for the media/type thing but Id be suprised if there is a lot of this left.
The form of our players means at least 10-12 could get big offers at years end, you might find guys like Wojo getting squeezed just because he has done his knee. Id be very suprised if we dont lose someone. This in itself isnt catastrophic , what would be is if we dont get what we gave Richmond last year, fair remuneration

Are these the only players that are Out Of Contract?

Geelong- Ling, Kelly, Bartel, S.Johnson, Chapman, King, Corey, Milburn, Enright, Sanderson, Rahilly, Riccardi, McCarthy

The enbolden players would all be due an increase. 8 players even 50,000 each is 400,000.I ask you, if your on 120,000, get offered 190,000 and the Pies offer 500,000 what would you do?

I'd be a mercenary and go for the money. Who cares about a possible premiership medallion if you can set yourself up for life with money like that. We are all aware of the fragility of an AFL career. However being a Cats supporter I'd hope that none of our boys desert for the big dollars. Hopefully the lure of possible premiership glory will be the catalyst to hold them.

Turbo, you don't seem to have a lot of faith in Cooky.

Go CATS!!

Totally unrealistic situation, TB.

For starters, most of those i assume you are speaking about are on a lot more than $120k (hell, a player on the absolute base wage would earn $99,990 if he played a full season, and that's before bonuses and other side earners).

And secondly, none of those players mentioned would be offered $500k by any club.
There would be only 30 odd players in the league on that kind of coin, and a percentage of those are silly backenders like Nick Holland (clubs have learnt and rarely backend deals now).
Cameron Ling is the only one in that group who could justify anywhere near that much, and he's certainly earning a lot more than $120k currently.

Someone said 17 so there's 4 missing if that's the case, but I believe DJ has signed up so if he's one of the 17, then it's 16.

I can't see McCarthy and Rahilly hanging around after this season, and Riccardi and Sando would be 50-50 at this stage to retire, perhaps even more likely. Ling and Chapman won't leave no matter what, they'll play for less money because that is the sort of people they are, and Kingy won't leave either due to the captaincy and his preferance to stay. I'm confident that we can keep SJ, Kelly, Bartel, Enright and Corey, I think SJ, Kelly and Bartel are all locals, Corey has re-signed previously when offered a trip home and Enright seems to be one of Bombers favourites. Milburn won't leave now that he's been here so long and has established himself.

Overall, I'm confident we can retain all of our players. After all, if West Coast can keep theirs while paying Judd $500K and Cousins $400K a year we can keep ours.

You may be right Phat. The figures may of a bit bit but dont under estimate what our players may get offered.I dont think Kelly or Bartel or Ling will go but Clubs will pay over the odds, sometimes a long way over the odds to move a player. There are plenty of examples of players being paid a fair bit more than their relative worth because they moved or because a club matched an offer.

Checkout my post in the SS Capacity youll see my main gripe but I dont doubt his ability. He is a skilled admin head honcho and the club is in good hands with him there but I doubt you will ever hear him put too much of a negative spin on things he/the club etc have done.He brought home the Bacon with Ottens after failures with White and Gergic and near failure with Rawlings and Im sure if it has to be , if we have to lose someone he will put the best face on it and attempt to get as much as we can get.

Maybe the whole issue of the uncontracted players will become less important, if as I hope , we ultimate success this year. In the contented afterglow of a GF win everyone could sign up again ala Brisbane
