Wasn't sure where to put this, so figured I'd create a new thread.

As I'm sure everyone has heard, the SACA are pushing to host the Cricket final at the Adelaide Oval. This would be during the week between a Port game and our home game against North.

Cricket aside (seems silly to host at AO when they will likely have plenty of room to spare to Rolton oval for the crowd), this raises huge concerns for us.

Firstly, they will need to dig up the centre square and bring in a drop in pitch. Then take out the pitch and replace it again. That leaves a lot of damage in the centre and around the ground. It opens up huge possibilities for the grass etc.. to be moving during the game and brings enormous injury risks.
Then there is the damage to the ground from the machinery used to bring the pitch in.
If you watch this video you can see the path that the machine comes in on. It leaves a damaged surface behind.

THEN, we will also have the issue of the grass being cut significantly shorter for the cricket. To me it raises the risk of other injuries (more likely concussions on heads hitting the ground, foot injuries, stress fractures etc...) There is a reason we still play on longer grass.

As good as it is for cricket in SA, as a club we should be very loudly (behind closed doors) making it clear we don't want this. We should not be putting out players at greater risk of injuries to appease cricket.

Thoughts?

Final should definitely be at AO, and AFL should not start before late March at the earliest. This is clearly cricket season.

From a weather perspective it would make a lot more sense in the south of the Australian continent to run footy up to even November (spring can run cold and wet all the way up to December sometimes in Melbourne) and for cricket season to take advantage of the dryer and calmer conditions through to end of March or even a bit later.

Agree. I'm not keen on the Shield final being played at AO given such a tight turn-around from the end of the PA game to our game a week later.
SACA have KRO ready to go, hopefully it gets played there.

Your concerns of increased injury risk due to grass length isn't that big of a deal - the SCG and Gabba don't have drop in pitches, and their squares are alot harder than you're worrying about.

I hope the SACA isn't putting all its eggs in Adelaide Oval. I'd also be trying to get in contact to try and utilise Glenelg Oval potentially as a plan B.

Also, if I were the AFL, I wouldn't be saying 'if we can make it work, we wont stand in the way' - You have a perfect opportunity to negotiate. I'd be going 'we're happy for you to play here, if we can use Adelaide Oval for any AFLw GF that needs to be hosted in Adelaide'

Move the drop in pitch to Footy Park "a la WSC" days.....or is that ground in no fit state to host a cricket match. TBH this is part of the reason why Footy Park was originally built to avoid clashes between the cricket and footy seasons! Bloody Redbacks, who'd have thought they'd start winning matches again!

So generous.
"Discussions are also underway to make the cricket final free to attend."

Our taxpayer money at work.

To be fair with the small amount of people that will attend, the difference between free and paid is relatively insignificant.

Having it at Adelaide Oval will generate a loss. However, that's ok, our club gets to subsidize the shield, what a amazing treat for us!

You are correct. Gatekeeper wages would exceed paying customers. Maybe it's to keep SACA members thinking their subs are being used wisely.

We're not supposed to make a profit though, so unless we can't pay our bills (which we can) then who cares?

Lunacy to hold it at a sides home ground ??

Wouldn't have thought so.
It’s well into footy season by then, they also play games at Karen Rolton.
Playing it at AO with 5k supporters there is embarrassing.
