Have heard that Swanpool are in real trouble, with only 3 senior players at training some nights. Hard to see them continuing for much longer... What are everyone's thoughts on this? Obviously it wouldn't be great for any club to fold but I can't see much light at the end of the tunnel...

Greta? Surely Tatong and swanpool would be the logical merger?
Yep football is struggling at a few clubs in the O&K....if the league executive want to look after a league with 8 teams then continue with what you are doing, else get proactive and do things like bring in Under 14 or 15 fourths so your auskickers don't have to go into the WJFL. Your U18's is a rabble and has gone backwards since I played in it over 20 years ago. It is probably the main reason you lost Rutherglen and Beechworth to TFL. Bring in a fourths and they will continue with thirds. If grade 5/6's are too old to do auskick them as a 5ths that play at half time of the seniors each week. Just try anything before you lose teams forever. In the past few years we have seen the demise of Devenish and Wunghu.

I think one thing that could save a lot of minor league clubs from extinction in Northern and NorthEast Vic is if the country AFL bring in mandatory points system across all the leagues and cut the reserves from major leagues. I think they should make Murray, GVFL and OMFL Seniors, U/19 and Murray can continue with their U/15. Minor leagues Seniors, Reserves and U/17, U/14. If you have a point system then a lot of the major league reserves players will have to filter out over all the local clubs and a few local clubs aligned to the major league clubs for senior players to be promoted and demoted to/from...eg Swanpool and Bonnie Doon aligned with Mansfield. Tatong, Goorambat, All Blacks with Benalla. Bright, Whorouly and Milawa with Myrtleford. Moyhu, King Valley and Greta with Wang Magpies. Glenrowan, Tarra and North Wang with Wang Rovers.

Interesting concept
Might be a bit embarrassing at the moment if players got dropped from say myrtleford to Milawa or whorouly they may go from major league seniors to minor league reserves.

They had 18 reserves players today and 12 senior players. 6 of their blokes from the seconds backed it up.

Would be interesting to check the names of the selected & the ones that actually ran out on the park....

Trot I'm sure they had some " helperouters" for the day and I don't think there's a club in existence that hasn't done that...Backing up this week tho will be the test and I hope for the Swans that it can be done....It's ok to say merge but there's a lot to be considered in that situation, netballers, communities, sponsors etc. I'm not saying it shouldn't be done but it has to be worked thru properly...

Swansong, if you're still around, perhaps you could give us an insight into where they're at...

Did anyone watch the Glenrowan v Tatong game, how did Glenrowan look?? Will they be a force this year I would have thought the margin might be a bit bigger, are the names they picked up as good as what everyone thought?? How did Nigel Robinson go, where did they play him?

Already after one round the scores show us that this year there is going to be a lot of one sided games again. Some teams are already struggling with player numbers and support staff what will happen in about 5 or 6 weeks when injuries and the cold weather kick in, I think thats its time for the vcfl to step in and start reasesing the league before its to late for some teams. One theory is that they maybe go back to a B&D style league next year with teams including Benalla all blacks, Goorambat, Tatong, Swanpool, Glenrowan, Bonnie doon, and Longwood(kdfl) making up the comp, What do all these teams have in common they aren't competitive against the stronger clubs in there respective comps. If they were in the same competition it would even the games up creating better games bigger crowds more interest from players and in some cases less travel for players and support staff. Lets face it who wants to play in a team that gets beaten by 250 points every week or who wants to play in a game that is close and competitive and means something to run out onto the ground every week...................... Any thoughts or ideas from anybody

So go back to the B&D where Bonnie Doon won the last flag by 100+ points? No thanks.

The B&D was a joke the last three years and there was 25 goal drubbings every week. It was very hard to attract players as they viewed the B&D as a crap league. In every league you are going to have easybeats but they will turn it around and become competitive. All Blacks did it and although they didn't win a flag in their window they were still extremely competitive. Maybe we should split the AFL up and re ignite the VFL so that Melbourne have a chance?

1 round into the season and everyone is saying the benalla and district sides should leave the comp! Did everyone go to the games and see if they were competitive. Or did everyone just look at the scores..there's still clearances coming and going for the whole league. Wait a couple of rounds then make your judgement on the sides!

Which ever way you look at it gentlemen (fortunately or unfortunately) these ex b&d sides are here to stay. Keeping in mind that our country communities rely heavily on our local sporting clubs it would be a shame to see any of these sides fold! Sport is not entirely about winning games!

Tips Round 2
Blacks v Doon - nil all draw maybe??
Moyhu by 90
Goorambat by 100
Whorouly by 90

Scott those ppl are the ones with short or no memory or knowledge of the league....EVERY club in the league, not just the B&d clubs, have been in the same possie....I remember Milawa and Tarra being there some years back.....Nth Wang, Glenrowan, Bright and us being up and down in the last 8 yrs...You'd think with all that time on their hands they'd do some homework rather than sit around and finger their belly buttons trying to think of something to post...

Tarra never looked like winning a flag when I was a pup until they bought the Long family to win one in 1990. Until they won again in 2008, the 1990 flag was their only one in 33 years...hardly call them successful!
It all ebbs and flows peoples...That is what is great about footy...it is the friendships that you make along the journey that matters the most...the odd flag is the cream on top.
Clubs like All Blacks, Goorambat and Tatong are at least 80 years old and have all won over 10 premierships. Only Greta and Moyhu has a better record than them. Bright, King Valley and North Wang haven't even won half the amount of premierships as these clubs so just because they are down a bit at the moment, doesn't mean they won't become a power house in the Ovens and King. They have been able to win premierships across different leagues throughout their history, it is in their culture.
Just look at Violet Town as the example. They won all their 12 flags before last season in the same leagues as All Blacks, Goorambat and Tatong etc....now Violet Town won last year in the Kyabram League and should go close again this year.

WTF, Glenrowan by 7 goals over Moyhu. Most on this forum believed they "may" make the finals.
Maybe we need to re-consider. Heard there was a large crowd, must have been a big day for the locals.

King Valley 48.21.309 def Swanpool 0 :(
KDFL Murchison 49.20.314 def Longwood 0 :(
Hope that is the low point for the Swans and RedLegs for 2013!
