Ovens & Murray Season 2013

Myrtleford, well Alpine Saints now, have signed Christian Burgess. Local boy who played in Willy's VFL Development League flag. Played Rd 1 against hoppers last year and was BOG. I wonder if the saints are a chance to get guys like Hugh Wales (Werribee VFL) and Frazer Dale (Delisted Carlton) back. Both would be very handy and would put the saints back in the mix of the chasing pack (teams outside the top 3).

With Wodonga recruiting well, raiders picking up a few as well as Corowa - both will be more competitive - the Hoppers, Maggies, Saints will struggle you would think to stay in touch with the top 5 or stay off the bottom if they don't pick up a few and maintain majority of their lists.

Will be very interesting to see which clubs have a serious crack at recruiting and sign some big names and which clubs focus on developing what they have and continue to build for the next few years.

Early days but based on things so far I would rate the teams for arguments sake as;
Yarra, Lavy, Albury top 3
Rovers and Bulldogs rounding out the 5
North Albury
Maggies and Saints
Raiders and Corowa still a touch behind

That should shock Flash. Seem to recall him playing a lot of interleague for the Goulburn Campaspe JFL.

Raiders have signed Nothern Blues VFL Power Forward/Ruckman Luke Visser for 2014. Very athletic and has an x factor about him. Have also picked up former Euroa midfielder Kasey Duncan
I hope Raiders haven't payed over the odds for Duncan! Probably wont matter anyway unless they will pay him to play in the reserves. Was OK in a terrible side in the GV, cant imagine he'd be playing much in the late game in the O&M - especially if Raiders are going to improve like they're saying

Watched Raiders and Euroa during 2013, couldn't have Raiders in the same breath as Euroa. Pretty rude to label Euroa as terrible when fifth spot in the OMFNL was snagged by a team that won...eight games! Duncan is a young bloke who could hold his own in a decent senior side at this level

It's a little disappointing that Visser has decided to return home, I thought he showed a lot of promise at vfl level.

What a joke, Kasey Duncan should not be announced as a recruit. Watched him play this season and he would have been in the bottom 3 for Euroa both times. If he is playing for more than base payments they will be ripped off!

Visser will be a gun, understand from reading the paper that Benalla had a go at him. Best of luck to the young kid.

Duncan played seventeen senior games for twelve goals and five times in the best. Euroa would have had Raiders measure by a long way in 2013.

hearing that Darren Jolly may be on the way to Wang Maggies.

I wonder how the WMFNC will pay back all previous players if they sign him...

Rumour about gun full forward, Jason Eagle having talks with Albury Tigers. He would be a great gain if they snagged him... In his prime being about 27 years of age, and has kicked some 750 goals in his senior career.(113 goals this season for Shepp. United in the GVFL)

we may as well just skip the home and away games.and play Albury and Yarra. In the go and get it over with.....joke this league

Why is it a joke big fella..? 2 sides have been ultra competitive, but let's not forget 3 of the last 5 prelims have been decided by less than a goal.. Both sides have had to earn their success & a ball hasn't been kicked in 2014 yet.

Boom.....seems only 1 other club doesn't sit back and sook and actually tries to compete. I'm very much an Albury person but I have a lot of resoect for Lavi and the way they approach the "big 2"

He's been strongly linked to EDFL & WRFL clubs but has always said he'd go play in the CHFL when he was done at a higher level, it'll be interesting to see what eventuates.

It's good to see such a strong and fierce rivalry with Albury & Yarra. Always a good game of footy to watch.
Lavington are doing good things by being so competitive, i really hope they or someone else can knock the "big 2" off this year.
I guess it would be easy to be apart of Albury & Yarrawonga and say there is nothing wrong with the Catch us if you can attitude. (Good on them, they can do it)
But in saying that, look at the other clubs around, & how much recruiting they would have to do to be competitive with them. Every Side that finished below the top 3 last year would need atleast 6 guns to be able to consistantly compete with these sides.
Albury have a every resource available at their club, Money, Employment, Planes Etc
Recruiting is a tough job for some clubs, some may have to relocate players set them off with jobs accomodations etc. Easy for Albury. How many of their players work for Joss?
I wonder if a points system would work in the O&M -

Ex AFL players 3 points - still want them coming to the O&M
Players from Similar Leagues GVFL for etc - 3points
Players from other O&M clubs 4 points - i hate the fact players change clubs

Any other ideas to bridge the gap?

Seems to be a pretty hot topic at the moment.

I think the points system is the only way to go. Salary caps are very hard to prove and would take a fair few people and a lot of time to try and enforce!

As you said nothing against those top sides good on them but the gap is getting too far in terms of money being able to be paid, employment and so on.

It's not only in the top leagues it is happening everywhere with all leagues.

Very much so more points for players that change within the comp, some of the money is hard to resist for blokes and loyalty is almost a forgotten word except for a handful at each club!

don't get me wrong I respect the the top 2 clubs and yes prelimes have been tight..prelimes are but if you can honestly sit and say it's coincidence they have faced off in the last 5 grand finals your kidding yourself.lavi are 3 or 4 retirements away from being just like the rest of the comp.lavi or any other team simply don't have the resources and money to compete with the top 2.the facts are there how many games have they lost between them in the last 5 years?I could nearly count them with my fingers.i think.yarra are probably the best run football club in Victoria, doesnt mean they dont get Good financial backing and good luck to them but it isn't good for the comp two clubs dominating.the other clubs cannot compete and the proof is there.just my opinion

I think you may find Yarra will back off a bit this year and go with what they have 2 or three kids that may step up in Practice matches may be looking for a CHB but also have Hargreaves who has got bigger.
The pigeons and the Tigers have both had stints at the bottom and i would say both Committees said enough is enough and both had cracks at the same time.

Using that points system, Albury would be on about 174! Their list is full of all of them.

One idea on how to bridge the gap would be for the O&M to stop bowing to yarra every Easter. They are clearly one of the bigger spending clubs, yet the board has given them a home game at Easter every year for a long time. Which means they'll remain a big spending club. I understand there are lots of visitors in town over that weekend and the league are trying to capitalize on it, but why can't they give the Easter game to Corowa one year and yarra the next. This year yarra get a home Easter game and a home June long weekend game. Both weekends there's only one game in Albury/wodonga for the whole weekend. Perhaps every year the bottom 5 teams get a home Easter game the following year.

This is a great suggestion. The Ovens & Murray seems to have an even draw with everyone playing each other home and away but the anomalies exist with scheduling. The league are making it even easier for Albury and Yarrawonga by giving them the best opportunities to cash in such as Albury getting Yarrawonga at home in rd 1 and Yarrawonga getting the Easter game. They are both huge tickets to write more cheques.
On fair opportunity I also believe that the Grand Final is great at Lavington but the catering rights should be taken in turn by each club over a 5 year period. For example Myrtleford might have the alcohol rights and Corowa get the food rights. The following year another 2 teams have a go.
