Overdue - time for federal government to ban sports betting ads

Hey don't joke.

My boy's math is coming along much better since he started playing Dream Team this year with me and some mates. He's budgeting upgrades, using percentages, calculating averages.

Just need to find something they are interested in.

I got %s from my Dad & footy.

They banned Tobacco adds and did it swiftly. Time for our leaders to pull their finger out here and do the same with sports betting ads.

I know we've all touched on this topic, but we need to continually revisit it, its getting worse and more and more dangerous. We are living in a time where everyone is having their mental health tested, spending more time home and in front of the tele. As evident by the ratings for the footy this weekend.

We've been overwhelmed by sports betting ads during the coverage - whether it's Nathan Brown and Dale Thomas hosting segments during the broadcast, commercials or in between games. Billboards and screen graphics stating the odds every few moments, this has become deplorable. The fact this isn't regulated by our pathetic politicians has made me lose faith that we are even a democracy anymore. It's a puppet face being led by the Murdoch's.

Once that was done with, we've got Shaq, Mark Walberg, making ridiculous commercials, snippets and sound bites butting sports betting at the forefront of our minds. Blurring the lines between sports and betting, normalising betting for children who are being brainwashed.

Now, even footy podcasts I listen too, Footyology an AFL Fantasy 'The Traders', have been sponsored by these absolute germs of society. 😂😂

Like its a ******* joke. Let's just teach sports betting in schools 🤦‍♂️

How long is a piece of string? Because these pathetic, vile, evil corporates are asking the question, and changing their own answer.
I love a punt but I agree totally. The over saturation of betting advertising is disgusting.

Stupid to compare betting to cigarettes. One led to physical medical issues, the other just leads to mental issues and family ruin. One could be bought over the counter, the other at least has some requirements that you ID yourself, agree to a bunch of terms and you can (at least have the option to) self-regulate. Not to mention they have to promote responsible gambling and the helpline.

It just isn't comparable and it won't happen.

It really turns me off and makes me question watching with my kids. No issue at all with sensible punting but impressionable minds wind up thinking that it's an essential aspect of the experience.

I almost don't mind the ads themselves - but there are far too many - but the way it's so integrated with the coverage is disgraceful.

Like others have said, I have absolutely no issue with a punt, but these ads are over saturated and multi layered. it's transitioned from segment to segment on the broadcast, from the commercials to in person segments and billboards and screen graphics. You can't escape it.

The argument that we are a 'nanny' state is irrelevant if we are banning the advertising on the punt.

Its totally relevant if we are banning the punt - and no one is saying to ban punting.

you do realise youre talking about a liberal federal government right?

they're more likely to allow advertising of cigarettes to children again.

Good to know as soon as Labor are in these ads will be gone, thank god for that. They always fix things for us…. Lol

People do themselves a disservice when they directly equate gambling with cigarettes. It makes you sound like you're a member of a 19th century temperance movement looking to ban all vices rather than making a considered argument.

Betting can be even more destructive than cigarettes but it is also far more harmless for most people.

One is literally a cancer-causing product full of nasty sh*t that offers very little upside beyond satisfying a craving that addicts need. While it's true that some people can 'casually' smoke ciggies, these are very much the exception, and even this can cause significant harm.

Betting for a lot of people is fun and can even provide a net financial gain for the rare skilled/lucky folks.

This is not to minimize the harm gambling does to some people and the broader effects on society. I agree that there needs to be far better regulation and the ubiquitous advertising needs to stop. But treat it just like tobacco? No.

Plenty of smokers don't get cancer either, doesn't mean cigarette advertising should not be restricted.

Also no one is talking about banning gambling, just banning gambling advertising.

Agreed. I'd also like to stop the animated ads that run around the boundary and up in the stands, very distracting when the game is on.

But of course they generate to much revenue $ to the AFL coffers for that...
Interesting you say that. The way it flickers puts me off and have wondered why it hasn't come with an epilepsy warning like video games.

;) might be the closest some kids get to a maths lesson in current schooling

Showing my age a bit but the old fractional odds are how I learnt division as a kid. Back then there was no advertising or pub TAB (at least where I was) so the newspaper racing guide was the textbook. Exactly as Obeanie1 said; you need something kids are interested in. It wasn't the racing so much I was interested in it was how much money could be made. Kwality also hinted towards another part of gambling that can be used as a teaching tool - probability. These tools made it easier for me to understand the share market later as there is a lot of crossover in the tools, just that the share market is a hell of a lot bigger (and gambling is bloody big!).

Speaking of the share market; last year there were stories of people losing all their money on the share market. Boredom+time=stupidity. The ease of trading and stories like GameStop and AMC lead people into something they didn't know about and a lot losing money. There is also a lot of stories of suicide within the trading community.

The Victorian Government raised the Point of Consumption Tax for gambling from 8% to 10% in January. What does this mean? over $1Billion going to the Hospitals and Charities fund. One could argue that without advertising that money going directly to hospitals and charities would be (far?) lower.

There is a lot of similarities between gambling and share trading. People may say there is less advertising of share trading. That depends on where you look and what you consume. I don't notice the gambling ads as much as I do the ads for Self Wealth, Stake, CMC and the like.

In saying that - there was one gambling ad I noticed.. Pointsbet. I still don't have an account with them but there shares have been absolute winners for me!

There was a game I was at earlier this year (could have even been Round 1) where the flashing of the ads (not just the gambling, all of them) made me think the same. It was enough that I thought the AFL would have some questions to answer. Maybe they did I guess as I didn't notice it as much after the early rounds.

No one is saying stop betting. 🙄

They're saying stop the advertising saturation trying to ingrain that AFL and betting go hand in hand. You know you can bet on what ever you like, but targeting children as its a must do is BS...

Walk into Optus stadium for first time, brand new TAB built into the stadium. :$

Watching 360, now over to the boys for the odds for this weekend, lol Jesus Christ.

Gambling ads spammed over the radio and TV all the time, making it out like punting the fully sick thing to do, absolute cancer.

It's like gamble to your hearts content its your money, but the normalization of gambling/constant ads is painful.

I give 1000/1 odds that they listen and ban them!

Manure would hit the fan if a player had a seizure while lining up for a goal
