Yeah, I don't think it would be too hard to find people who were completely dismissive of Paparone of a footballer.
Few and far between...

Still early days for the young bloke so hopefully he can string a few seasons together and lose his whipping boy status. Hope he doesn't go down the path of Polkinghorne and relying on odd jobs to get games.

Becoming one of my favourite players. Bounced back from a poor first few rounds and looking way more composed down back.

He still has work to do below his knees. Paps has a horrible case of the fumbles when the ball hits the deck.

Nonetheless, onward and upward!

I actually had the opposite impression. I feel like he's often pretty good below the knees, especially by the standards of a guy his height. I've send him collect and use by hand neatly in traffic at least a few times this year.

What I find exciting about Paps is that he covers a phenomenal amount of ground and I feel like he can execute most skills pretty well. He's just a bit inconsistent. But, as the season has gone on, he is doing the right thing more often. If he can continue along this trajectory for even one more year, he'll be a weapon for us.

The big Paps only major weakness that I'm not sure will ever be 'fixed' is that he is very poor in a contested situation. Doesn't win many CP and his DE drops right off when confronted and usually handballs to space/panic kicks it down the line. Everything else is fine IMO and his gamble is starting to pay off.

All of the above comes with vast experience; something a 20 year old with fewer than 40 games under his belt simply cannot have.

His season is coming along very nicely, leading our marks by a lot and surprisingly 13th in the AFL for rebound 50's; ahead of the likes of Harry Taylor :thumbsu:

Got this one wrong. Thought he wouldn't ever have the composure or strength to hold down an important role down back, I thought his only real strength was linking up and galloping along a wing. How wrong I was to this point.

Composure, smarts, decent ball use, the ability to go one on one (I was in the toilet for the trelore incident - lol). He could grow into one of the leagues genuine X factor backman. Credit to him, Leppa and a development staff for making a risky but worthwhile transition.

Imagine him floating around back there with an experienced defender or three

Marco Paparone The ultimate utility over his first two seasons, Paparone has found a home in the Lions' back six. Mixing time between key post and running half-back, the 20-year-old has come on in leaps and bounds. While he still occasionally gets caught out of position and gets beaten in the odd one-on-one contest - which will improve as he gets stronger - Paparone's elite running ability allows him to leave his man, get into space, and be an ideal link between defence and the midfield. Still plenty of room to improve, but the more he plays, the more comfortable he looks.

Paparone's best game in 2015 R10 v GWS. Paparone's most reecent game was superb. He finished with 25 disposals and 11 marks and was a major reason the Lions stayed competitive for so long.

Wait! wasn't he our whipping boy the other week? I'm confused!

Seriously though, he has shown a nice level of improvement this year and I pretty much agree with everything Whiting has mentioned above.

From memory I don't think Whiting wrote the whipping boy column? Which would explain the inconsistency from AFL.com.au.

But go Pap! Robertson would've been a close second I would've thought.

EDIT: Just noticed he put Harris Andrews down as another to improve... hard for a first year player to be most improved

Mike would have seen a bit of Harris Andrews in the reserves last year. Hard to say he hasn't come on strong since then.

Fair point but I thought the criteria for such a piece would've been improvement in senior football. You could similarly argue that Hogan is the most improved player in the comp based on that line of thinking

Probably not a lot expected of Harris Andrews when he was drafted in his first year, may not have expected him to debut this year. Hence he has exceeded those low exceeded those low expectations, which is great.
