Summer Paris 2024 - The Matildas Thread

Who really knows what went on behind closed doors. I doubt the reporters who were breaking these stories have a clue.

Too many reports in the last week about the players not liking him to not have some truth to it.

Hard to win tournaments if some players are following Kerrs direction while others are trying to do the right thing by the coach.

He did well to last this long if that's the case.

Unpopular opinion, but without Sam Kerr, The Matildas aren't a top 4 or top 6 side. With her, they are a chance to get into that part of an Olympics or WC tournament.

They have too many average skilled players who played well on home ground to get 4th in a WC with a half fit Kerr.

It wasn't a surprise that they didn't get out of a tough group in Paris, but they didn't play that well.

For Oz to win, they need a Kerr to make up for their deficiency in defence.

The next coach should concentrate on improving the defenders, maybe play regular games against young blokes, u/20 type sides, because Kerr is a once in a generation striker, and soon they wont have her scoring power permanently.

If that's an unpopular opinion then sheesh looweesh, the majority of the populace are kidding themselves.

At this point it should be clear any team heavily reliant on Caitlin Foord just isn't cutting it. Total ball hog who is either blinded by delusions of being on Kerr's level, or just has no cognitive capacity to recognise a teammate in a more dangerous position.

Mackenzie Arnold was also horrendous throughout the tournament. Dunno if she's been drinking her own bathwater or what the go is there. In any case, there's only so much you can credibly blame on the coach.

It's also looking like the APL/FFA will sooner rather than later run the floundering A-Leagues into the ground to an extent irreversible by any realistic investment, thereby killing the already-slim chances of either national team ever accomplishing anything of note.
