Mate i'm sure he would play on for 2 seasons for the whole $300000. I can't see him wanting to enter the draft and head to WA, QLD or GWS, but i can see him staying in Vic for quite a bit less than what he's ever got before.

Carlton bowed out on him because his asking price was at least 300k a year. So he's getting at least that.

At 26 and a lot of football ahead of him, yeah.

Daisy was a free agent, not delisted by his club.

Not buying into the discussion of Daisy, but doubt Chapman wouldn't have been delisted if Cats didn't have heaps of real quality outside their 22. They gotta start giving game time to Horlin-Smith, Smedts, Murdoch, Kersten, and Thurlow or they will start looking elsewhere. Plus had to clear cap space for someone who will be there mid-long term like a Shaw or Adams.

You don't just delist gun players even if they are nearly 32. You keep the best players on your list as long as they are performing.

He was delisted because he refused to sign a contract.

The Cats had offered Chapman a contract for next season, but it was a compromised deal in which the club could not guarantee him any more than eight games, meaning he faced the prospect of finishing his career in the VFL.

He was performing, probably their best player in the Port final. The fact is they would prefer to start playing some kids.

Chapman @ 30 >>> Davey and Jetta so we will take him in a heart beat. We also may get to see a bit of Winderlich so Chapman and Winderlich would be a huge bonus for Essendon in 2014 if it eventuates.

Well, yes, he's a club legend and all, so he was "offered a contract". But being specifically told he wasn't going to play more than a few games sounds to me like there was no intention of having him around next year.

Lot of talk about this final, yes he certainly looked good, and I do think that, all things being equal, he'd still be capable of producing it at times. But I just can't have confidence in a 32yo coming off a 7 game season.

If we grab him I hope like hell I'm wrong and he kills em, but my first preference would be not to take the risk. This is one for back in the days of unlimited list sizes I think. With only 38 bloody spots id much rather us try another younger bloke, even if is a more mature type from the VFL etc. We've drafted pretty well recently right down into the rookie draft, I think we should be confident and give someone else a crack.

Not denying a large risk factor and I have no doubt he will get injured, he probably has every year for the last 8-9, but even when he does get injured, he has been one of the best HF/Mids we've seen in the last decade and can still impart valuable knowledge to players like Merrett, Kommer, Gleeson, O'Brien and Colyer. It's only two years and if we go deep into September we'll be glad to have another player out there who knows what it takes.

have always loved Chappy. fantastic player. still has something left to give, if you look at his form in his last couple of games. if you take out last season, he played 20+ games the 4 seasons before.
happy to get him on a 2 year contract, if that's what's going to happen.

No. Would you keep a high risk good player with 1, maybe 2 years left in then and lose what could be a couple of 10 year players, or thank him for his services and develop the young talent into solid long term prospects? I know what I would choose. The fact is the cats haven't finished bottom 4 since the mid 80's, this says that, on a whole, their list management has been better than any other club and it because they can make the smart, but hard descisions.
