Performances people may have forgotten about

Hey everyone,

In the midst of North Melbourne's rich history, there are some individual performances that don't always get the recognition they deserve.

One example that stands out to me is Wayne Carey’s incredible performance against Collingwood in Round 6, 2000. Not only did he finish with 10 contested marks, but he was an absolute presence all over the ground, dominating in the air despite the attention from the opposition.



What other performances do you think have been overlooked or forgotten in North Melbourne's history? Whether it’s a big individual game, a stunning team effort, or a player who flew under the radar, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I suspect I was at this game but actually can’t remember it. To be honest, being the best I have seen, probably just looked like a normal game from The King lol. Fk he was a great player, The Greatest !

Adrian McAdam's 2nd game after 7 on debut v Tigers, kicked 10 goals 6 behinds v Swans in a 114 pt win { 35.19 229 to 16.9 105 }. edit also took 14 marks.

This bloke. Took the game from St Kilda's reach in Boomer's 350th. They put Gwilt on him, didn't make a difference. His pace (for a big man) troubled defenders with no leg speed and he had a beautiful set shot.

Reckon Darren Steele played a game at the SCG ( ' 87 ? ) Mightta had 42 possies and coudda been Schimma's last game with a knee injury.

Malcolm Blight.

Faced the humiliation of being sacked as playing Coach (Schimma was Captain) in 1981 and rather than sooking it up he came out the very next game and booted 11 goals against the Dogs at the Western Oval.

A superstar.

John Longmire's 14.2 against Melbourne (R14 1990) and 12.2 against Richmond (R2 1990) gets forgotten because there is little or no footage of his performances.

1990 was an interesting season with some real eye-opening performances mixed in with a few shockers, and despite missing the finals (it was the final year of the top 5 and we finished 6th) we finished with the second-best attack, only 1.1.7 behind the Minor Premiers, Essendon. It was probably the first year where we showed signs of the successful team we became in the second half of the decade.

Wayne Schwass Round 18 1995 Vs West Coast.

I was on the half forward flank for this exact goal linked below and it’s one of my earliest footballing memories.

I remember Schwatta just being so clean that day when everyone else was fumbling in the conditions. He was absolutely manic with his pressure as well. Think he ended up with 3 Brownlow votes from 35 touches and a couple of goals.

Was there that night too

Actually, I've just found a different video on YouTube (The guy has disabled viewing the video on other apps), it's about an hour of highlights and the quality is pretty good. I can't find anything on the Melbourne game.

The 1999 qualifying final against Port is another game I have really fond memories of, wasn’t many of us in the stands at the MCG that day because of the wet and miserable weather. Despite being a dominant side all year there were still question marks as to how we’d go in finals because of the previous two years.

Was a tough and physical contest but the cream rose to the top with Carey being the most influential player on the ground. Ended up kicking 6 from 24 disposals and 11 marks which was freakish in the wet conditions. Allison, Grant, Boomer and Bell had a field day across half forward because often Carey would have 3 opposition players directly on him.

We ended up beating them by 40 or so points but you could see that as a team we were peaking exactly at the right time.

One of my favourite games, we had been bullied by them till then somewhat. Also of note was that was a particularly cold day. Made standing behind the goals all day real fun. Was 7 degrees or so mid arvo when the rain set in.

Was a contrast to the final against them a few weeks later when I got sunburnt at Punt Rd end..

Happy days.

Round 10, 2000. Mothers Day arvo at the G vs Freo.

Freo led by 3 points at half time before we kicked 18 goals to 3 to win by 88 points. 12,000 in attendance as we kicked 12 goals in the last quarter.

2 goals from Gary Dhurrkay in his second last AFL game.

I’m pretty sure I went. Stood on the Eastern City side on the flank terrace with a huge 1970’s blanket to keep me warm

But then again it could have been Fitzroy

Went to a wedding the day of the Final. They are still married 30 years later.

hard to believe just how many of those types that we had. So many of them were fantastic individual players but probably didn't get the individual kudos because they were lost in the Carey shadow. Had so many that had that mix of skill and toughness.
