Perth Drivers are absolutley shit.

I'm a madly parochial Sandgroper, and yet agree completely. Perth drivers are by FAR the worst in the world. I've driven in all Australian cities, London, New York and about 40 countries. Our drivers are a disgrace. Never use indicators to turn, merge or change lanes...hoon around being idiots. They get in the right lane at lights, not indicate they're turning right until there's a heap of cars behind them...then indicate. Shocking.

I semi disagree. Atleast here there is some sembelence of order. In China, it's bascially a driving free for all.
There's drivers coming right at you on the wrong side of the road. No-one stops at signs they just keep going. It's a nightmare to cross the road and the only way to do it is step out and hope they go around you..

Scariest thing. Ever.

Note to Perth drivers:

If you are driving around town and an angry looking boy with medium long black hair in a white festiva is behind you, DO THE ****ING SPEED LIMIT OR GET OUT OF MY WAY!!!

Here's an Idea. If the car behind you is not a cop car/commodore then get going quickly.

I doubt a cop would stop traffic/swerve around just so he could tell you to stop being so sane!

He might not...he might. It's all irrelevant because it's still breaking the law, it's still stupid to criticise someone for not breaking the law and you're still a chump..

I was thinking "Wow, Dizzy's serious". Then I saw the words 'White Festiva' and it kind of distroyed the train of thought.

If I saw an angry boy yelling from a festiva i'd think, who the hell did that guy piss off to get stuck with that car?

Festiva's are great but *Cough*

Drivers who go slow in a 110klm zone is fine but when they get to an overtaking lane they speed up to 110klms+ dam annoying.Drivers who go slow but speed up a hill then slow down on the other side.

Totally 100% agree with that, cant count how many times I have been driving down south and have people doing 100k's then when its the overtaking lane go up to about 115-120. Probably my biggest pet hate about drivers.

Sometimes I play a game at the lights,I pull up at a red light but leave about a half car length in front of me(slightly to the right of the lane) then I move forward a little bit then watch as the car behind does it and the one behind him and so on.You will be amazed how many times some people will creep forward each time you do it:D

Thats pretty annoying.

Anyone else hate it when people are turning into a turning lane yet dont actually fully get in it until the very end? So they are slowing down to turn but are half in your lane half in the turning lane...agree with all about merging, it really isnt that hard.

One time some hick jumped out of his navara and punched my passenger side window because he thought I cut him off, the fact that I was in the right lane and we were approaching red lights didn't seem to register. I ddn't give him any reaction, just stoicism. He then proceeded to stalk me down the freeway from south st to mounts bay road, speeding up to drive alongside me to yell abuse, then getting in front of me and slowing down. All the while I didn't react to his provocations until the last minute when I gave him the cry baby motion and kisses goodbye as I was turning off at mounts bay road. He turned accross a line of trafic and over the raised paint of the freeway exit slip and then followed me around perth for a few blocks. It was a bit creepy.

You shouldn't have cut me off then. cry baby..... :D

Perth drivers aren't that bad compared to some other cities... like Adelaide. I think Adelaide has one of the highest road rage incidents in the country? The roads here in Adelaide are absolutely shit house, most likely because they are too poor to fix them. Pot holes the size of small buses... if I don't feel 5 bumps every 100m I'm not in Adelaide. I think it has something to do with the city deciding to let trucks be able to go through the main city routes..... good decision there.

You realize how plush Perth is in regards to social utilities and roads once you've been to a place like Adelaide.

I dont think WA drivers are "worse" than drivers in any other State in Australia, just far more selfish.

I put this selfishness down to the disproportionately high numbers of 4WD "Tanks" on the metropolitan roads in Perth. The people who drive these vehicles are almost always "devastatingly middle class" and seem to think that because they sit higher on the road than everyone else they are entitled to disregard road traffic laws. It also makes it difficult for other cars to anticipate traffic ahead of them if they have a 4WD Tank blocking their line of sight for 20 metres down the road.

I would also like to note that the standard of TransPerth Bus drivers seems to have plummeted dramatically in recent years. Perhaps the bus drivers are on tighter shcedules, or they are having trouble filling vacancies, but I am sick of bus drivers who just pull out in front of traffic without consideration for passing traffic. Just because they have a "give way" sticker on their bus window does not mean they can disregard raod safety rules. They just seem to put their indicator on and then start immediately coming accross regardless of whether there is space for them in the next lane - they have an attitude of "well my indicator is on, so you make room for me".
There are a hell of a lot of 4wds, not only can't you see in front of them, there lights shine right into a sedans rear vision mirror, they have a higher centre of gravity making them easier to flip and harder to steer, they have a greater stopping distance, they use more petrol and tyres and they hardly ever leave the city.

I agree that WA drivers are incredibly selfish. I haven't driven enough in other states to compare respective abilities, but there are certain things a lot of WA drivers just don't get.

Merging - it's really not that hard. I don't understand why people feel the need to either slow right down when they have right of way or speed up to overtake when they don't.

Roundabouts - give way to your right and to all traffic that's already in the roundabout. What is so difficult about that?

Cyclists - you are either road users or you are not, make up your ****ing minds. If you are going to sit one metre inside the lane and **** up the road position of cars then don't switch to the footpath, ride through red lights when the little green man comes up etc. when it suits you.

One of the main problems with selfishness is that it a lot of people have no concept of how their behaviour affects traffic continuity. If traffic is travelling at 80 km/h and you wish to enter, it is your duty to merge in at that speed. The onus is not on the scores of other motorists zooming past to accommodate you as you try to get on at 20 km/h over or under the traffic speed, it is on you to keep the flow of traffic moving.

With the whole TransPerth bus comment, you're actually meant to give way to them. My driving instructor (I think it was him) said that if you see one with it's indicator on, either get into the right lane, or slow down. Imagine being the one driving that bloody huge ass bus?

I almost shit myself the other day, was heading toward Mandurah but was going through Secret Harbour. Anyway, there is a roundabout which has 2 exits (if you're coming from Secrets), one to go toward Golden Bay and one to get on Ennis Ave. The roundabout goes into two separate lanes, but when you actually leave, it forms back into one. Anyway, the bus was turning right, so I went into the left lane to go straight...and dear god, the bus took over both lanes as it went onto the roundabout  almost took out my car. If it had have though, it would've been my fault for not keeping my distance...it just never occured to me that it would happen.

Ohhh...now I understand why I get so mad when 4WDs are behind me. I kept thinking they were flashing their lights at me...

They drive me nuts. They amount that are on the road and don't even do the speed limit (as in SPEED) is ridiculous, and they take forever to take off at traffic lights.

People who speed past you in the right lane coming up to lights then expect you to let them in when they get stuck behind a car turning right. Screw that, you took the chance in the right lane now ****ing wait if you screwed up.

Not sure if anyone knows this one but trying to get onto the Freeway at Powis street, the right lane is always banked up because you have to be in that lane to turn onto the freeway. Fine I wait, but everyday someone drives straight up the left lane to miss the jam then puts their indicator on to get into the right lane. I feel its my duty to not just not let them in but to make sure they miss the turn onto the freeway altogether thus taking more time than if they just waited like everybody else. Its always the same kind of people as well, business guys in suits that think they are more important than everybody else.

Too right DBT. Those arseholes really peeve me off. It happens every day. If I have the chance to deny them I do it every time but someone always lets them in.

GJ the Law was changed some time back to give buses re-entering the traffic right of way. It is you who is breaking the law by not giving it to them. It's a tricky thing because it is different to every other road user.

Traffic flow could easily be smartened up in Perth in lot of places. For example. turning right from Thomas St between Kings Park Rd and Hay St (heading towards Hay) should be banned during peak hour. There are lights at Kings Park Rd, there are lights at Hay. Every road to the right between the two can be accessed by turning right at Kings Park Rd and then taking the first left. Trying to turn right half-way between the two banks traffic back to the lights such that when they turn green traffic can't flow, and continuity is lost.

Two other concepts people tend to struggle with in Perth is multiple turning lanes and unbroken road lines.

E.g. #1 After you exit the tunnel onto Loftus St and turn left, there are two lanes that can go left. The path each turning car is expected to follow is easily visible from the road markings. The number of people in the left-most lane who merge into the lane to the right as they turn (without looking across of course) is staggering. Surely it isn't that hard to follow where your car is meant to go at one of these intersections and stay in your ****ing lane?

E.g. #2 After you exit Kings Park Road and turn left onto Thomas St there is an unbroken line for about 100 m before the line returns to being broken. Most people switch from the left to either the middle or right lane after entering Thomas St. Changing lanes only becomes dangerous because often after you have checked your mirrors and blind spots, when you go to change lanes after the unbroken line ends, some peanut behind you zooms across into the next lane straight across the unbroken line. It's a ****ing unbroken line, how hard is it to not cross it?

I know this is a thread about Perth drivers but people using country roads are also brain dead.
I travel on the Albany Highway 2-3 times a week and it is a fricken nightmare. The majority of drivers are OK. But Jesus wept some of the muppets should be belted with a blunt object. People must be sick of living with the risks they take to get past other vehicles.
Overtaking vehicles on blind corners or hill crests. Trying to overtake a road train when there is less than 100 metres till the end of a passing lane and expecting the 50 tonne truck to slow down or move to the edge of the road to let them pass. And the classic where the idiot starts to pass a vehicle then expects the poor sod coming the other way to slow down and move off the road so they can continue merrily along. Trust me it does happen.
At the end of each journey I say a small thank you that I haven't had a crash or had to pull some poor bastard from one.

That second right turning lane onto hay from thomas is an absolute shocker, I've had people think that they're still on thomas continue on and try an merge with the inside thomas lane, the stupid prick nearly cleaned me up yet I think he was somehow oblivious to the whole episope. He was probably scrathing his head in regards to my middle finger vigil all the way down thomas.

I have a term I like to use for those kind of people. Temporary Australians.
Those are the kind of people who should have drowned in the gene pool.

for me the worst thing is roundabouts - a lot people have no idea about when or how to use their indicators
but my pet hate is people who think they have to give way to the right even if that right lane doens't have access yet ( cos it's giving way to it's right ie your polar opposite)
so you all have to sit there for ages

re the poster who said about the train crossing though - it'ss not worth the risk going while the lights are still red - just suppose another train comes? & if it doens;t you've lost about all of 10 seconds from the barrier going up to the lights stopping

The way I drive it you'd think it was a V8.

What do you mean by this?

I think what Janiek means is:

Say you're waiting to go straight ahead and there is traffic to your right, but that traffic can't go yet because they have to give way to the traffic on their right who lets say is going straight ahead. Janiek hates people who still wait for that traffic and then the traffic to their right.

Hope that helped.

Ohh...that makes sense now :thumbsu:

Thanks. Although, I must say, people are stupid and don't use their indicators which is why I guess a majority of people do this.
