Also Port and Adelaide didn't open the ground, Port played a game there in 2011.
When it comes to opening the upgraded AO (which is comparing apples with apples, not the orange of "first AFL game at venue about to be upgraded to be fully AFL-compliant and with suitable capacity"), it was the Showdown. Power didn't open AO as it had been hosting events since 1871 :p

I don't get why the clubs would each want to play one 'home' game there before a Derby. The first match on this ground will be a 100% neutral game, because the Home team will have never played there either. Why not use the one neutral match on the other team that uses it as its home ground?

Do the AFL want to fill the stadium for its first game or have it half full for a West Coast vs. Gold Coast opening game?

Both clubs would pack out their first game at the stadium no matter who they play.

Because as the most traveled sides in the AFL we get to use the Derby as a break from traveling for a few weeks. Eagles play 4 of the next 5 games at Subiaco Oval. Play a Derby round 1 and you don't get that extra break not traveling in the middle of the season when we need it the most. This year Freo have had 2 games in a row at Subi already and are getting 3 games in a row later on in the year.

Would like to have the first footy game there, but wouldn't cry if Freo got to play first. Cricket and Ed will be playing there first anyway... the first footy game doesn't need to be a derby to be special. The first game will be special for both sets of supporters no matter what.

As likely due to way WA memberships work, West Coast would end up having a home crowd 5 times the size of Freo's. I don't know about you, but that sounds like a leg up to West Coast.

They could make it neutral but I don't actually think that's fair since it West Coast's turn after all(and they wouldn't agree to that anyway).

Either way, both teams will pack it out easily for any opposition for the first year at least.

& the way the Derby works, the clubs alternate on 'home' ground status aka the seating allocation for members.

McGee has a 'neutral' concept, a one off logistical nightmare, increasing the chances of the sort of stuff up that dogged Docklands for years.

The first Derby of 2018 will be an Eagles home game IF the current rotation is honoured.

I'd suggest North as the opposition given their WA following & special (priority) consideration for their WA members .

Wouldn't it be Freo's turn for hosting the first Derby next year? WCE hosted the first one this year. Or is it different to the SA Showdown and WCE always gets the first one and Freo always the second one?

The current rotation doesn't have to be honoured, look down the list, it's swapped around more seasons than not...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Derby

It seems to have improved from 98% to 99.1275% this afternoon. I guess that is progress.

Yes, it sounds that that W.A. government asked for 2% that's 2% of $1000,000,000 = $20,000,000
Now we only have $1,275,000 outstanding.

I do believe the government is erecting a large monument with a plaque stating " this stadium WASN"T built with any federal funding at all".

I thought we handled our new oval well. Port Adelaide hosts the first game which was a showdown and Crows hosted the second game against a different opponent. In Perths Case:

Freo host a round 1 Derby, West Coast play Geelong in Round 2. Freo then play round 3.

OR Vice Versa.

A bit of a left field idea for the first game.

WA vs Vic State of Origin.

Reasons for:
Gil is on record saying SOO is something that can be used to celebrate special occasions
WA v Vic will be an unbelievable game
Start of season and a one off game so players will be keen to play
Gets around the WCE/Freo shitfight over who gets the first game
Ratings bonanza in Victoria

Reasons against:
Potential Injuries
