The only thing Essendon can argue is whether the rules/laws are fair. But the AFL signed up to them, so they must exercise them.

No, there's actualy stacks to argue against.

There are no positive tests, so ASADA must gather evidence to sustain a charge.

Is the evidence sufficient to sustain a charge?

Who knows the answer to that?

You can't unintentionally take performance enhancing drugs. You only get a benefit if you do it for a prolonged period like a series of jabs or pills combined with training otherwise there's no point.

In this case, are we even talking about PEDs - not sure that has been established by anyone, least of all, ASADA.

Last night Maclure compared him to Lance Armstrong. Now on the one hand, that may seem harsh. But similar to Lance, he shouldn't be allowed to compete because he's admitted to taking a prohibited substance.

It's not harsh - it's plain stupid.

The Tour has been plagued with drug taking from its very earliest days, and until recent days, it was an accepted part of the culture, afterall, everyone can ride a pushbike with a similar level of expertise, so it's a sport where drug taking really does give you an edge.

On top of that long standing and accepted culture of drug taking, the other thing which people conveniently forget is that hard evidence of drug taking on the tour had been showing up for decades BEFORE the authorities decided to take it half-serious.

So this idea that we woke up one morning and concluded Armstrong was on the gear as well is stupid. Hard evidence existed for decades.

It's a stupid analogy.

Here, we have the possibility that something may have happended which might ultimately get caught up by WADA's catch-all provisions - it might get caught up.

There are no positive tests.

In fact, it's debateable whether it gets caught up at all.

It's a completely different scenario to Armstrong.

Lance was banned BEFORE he admitted to taking anything. Circumstantial evidence was enough.

Who'd have thought cycling would show more integrity on this issue than the AFL
It is quite ironic that all this is unfolding during the tour.

Sad to see how naive the AFL community is in relation to PED. PED work and the result is cheating regardless of intent, motive etc. That is why they are banned. As WADA said if it is your system...you are gone.

The constant pitiful denial publically expressed by essendon people is really losing and sense of entertainment and is not just sad.

How well do ASADA know their PEDs?

well it is like this. WADA is the international body and ASADA the Aust arm (apologies to most for the BGOB). WADA publish the list and include coveralls based on effect as specific drugs can be developed faster that lists can be updated. As a 15 year old swimmer is expected to know and is mandated to abide by, you dont cheat and used stuff that is banned.

If you do use stuff that is banned, even for a masking agent that hides use but don't improve performance, you are gone. Why so strict - because competitors, clubs and countries constantly try to cheat to get an advantage. If it is not stamped out 100% sport becomes a joke and only those that use stuff will be competative. There are serious big labs working on it not just a minnow like Dank.

WADA and ASADA agree the stuff watsons told us he used is banned. join the dots.

Great - and yet ASADA have the same information now that they had in April.

And what has happened?

Where are the infraction notices?

Nothing.

Literally....nothing.

Quite different we have opportunity to catch the drug cheats now before the sport becomes infested with it.

I'm not going to go over it all again it's well noted what essendon did and tried to do.

The only defence left is a technicality to get around a guilty verdict. The bombers are filthy disgusting cheats.

absolutely. Everyday this goes on, AFL is being undermined.

how's your petition going mate?

I agree on the first point.

It's good to make an example of Essendon - but the question remains - did they cross the WADA threshold.

I'm not sure it's as clear cut as you're suggesting.

And overall - are we talking massive levels of hysteria?

Yes.

Also - it now seems mental that the Government made a song and dance about the blackest day in sport, and at worst, we are talking about a club which may have, may have, barely crossed the threshold.

Starting slow but trying to get media coverage. I think after this weeks game, and more boo'ing, we'll have more.

Jobe is in a different boat to the other players, because he's admitted use publicly. If Essendon FC or the AFL don't act, it will send the message that "if you admit to taking drugs, nothing will happen to you, until ASADA forces their hands"

Did Jobe admit use publicly?

Geez, that's damning.

I'm surprised ASADA haven't acted with such damning evidence.

Yeah, this article details the admission. ASADA can't act until they finish their report, which may come out in August, which means there are at least 3 more weeks of games to be played - imagine if he proves a key part of their finals success but is only suspended later? it could turn the finals into a farce. I'm more surprised that the club or the league hasn't acted, its not sending a great message. Thus the petition.

not really. There's stuff going on behind the scenes that you wouldn't know about, otherwise he would be suspended. But, with 27 signatures your petition is ramping up.

Oh, and good luck on the "booing" this weekend. I'm not sure the 3000 outraged Port supporters will get their voices heard over the 30,000 Essendon supporters cheering, but I guess the proof will be in the pudding

If there's stuff behind the scenes, why don't they let the public know? It's only degrading the image of AFL and their club to let him play with this looming over his head.
