Rayner. Seemed genuine in his willingness to move interstate and once here I reckon he'll thrive and really enjoy it here under the mentorship of Fagan/Beams/Hodge/Zorko. In terms of playing ability he is a match winner and we could definitely use some more match winners. He'll take some time to build his tank but he can spend the first few years in the forward line alongside Hipwood and Cameron and that trio would be very exciting to watch. In 2009 Dustin Martin was pick 3 and Scully and Trengove were picks 1 and 2. I can't help but get the feeling if we pass on Rayner LDU/Dow could turn out to be vanilla midfield types akin to Scully/Trengove who are/were handy footballers by the way, but no where near the superstar that Dusty is. Rayner has superstar/marquee player written all over him and we are crying out for one of those.

Just on this point, I think it is important to remember that whoever we draft will need time to build their tank/translate their junior midfield form into form in the seniors. Look at Berry and McCluggage this year. They showed very promising signs but obviously are a couple years away from performing consistently week to week for 4 quarters in the midfield. The fact that Rayner can step straight in and contribute in another area of the ground should be seen as a big positive, particularly when that area of the ground is the forward line and we could use some more fire power there.

He should spend some time in the two's as well playing greater midfield minutes and maybe spending 80/20 in the forward line/midfield when playing in the seniors next year.

To be honest though I do genuinely rate all of the top prospects this year and I'd be stoked for us to end up with any of them(Rayner/LDU/Dow/Cerra/Stephenson/Brayshaw).

The more I think about it the harder it gets to pick between Rayner, Dow and LDU. I hope Connole makes the right choice, all have different attributes to become A-graders. Dow could be Dangerfield/Shuey like, LDU like Shiel/Pendlebury and Rayner like Martin/Stringer. We just have to take who we think is the best player in the draft. For the first time this year I'm on the Rayner train.

Cerra might have the best skills out of all of them but for me just doesn't have the speed/power to warrant the number 1 draft pick.

Stephenson's kicking has too much of a question mark on it for my liking too, and is yet to prove himself as a genuine midfielder.

Brayshaw and Coffield would surely be a reach.

Not LDU.

I know it's only a short clip, but I know quite a few guys in real life who have the same attitude and mannerisms...and while they're great guys to be around, they're all happy go lucky type characters who don't take anything too seriously, including their work. As a result they don't push themselves hard enough to get the most out of themselves.

Outside of that clip, have also seen reports of queries regarding his dedication to being an elite professional footballer.

As we have just seen with Schache, talent is only part of the equation. Fagan prioritises character first of all, above talent. He also said of Jarrod Berry: "Jarrod's got (of last year's draftees) the greatest talent of all - the ability to get the most out of the talent you've got".

Don't know enough about the characters that f the other boys to comment.

I have to say I kind of agree, but for a different reason. A poster mentioned this a day or so ago but have forgotten whom. The smarter and more confident kids might be the way to go, they just seem to be able to handle themselves better. Just from those interviews I'd have Dow and Rayner ahead.

People liken Rayner to Dusty, and I can see that. But gee, he has a bit of SPP about him the way he lays some monster tackles on people and just looks hard as nails. I warming to him a lot.
Yeah one thing I really like about Rayner is his competitiveness and the fact that he'll fight tooth and nail to win every single contest and you can just see how much he hates losing. Reminds me of Hipwood in that regard. His tackling as you mentioned is absolutely ferocious as well.

Twomey on SEN the other day did acknowledge that he can go missing during chunks of games but then qualified it by saying that he is the type of player that will then bob up and win you a game that is on the line.

In other words, has that characteristic of all sporting champions, the ability and will to produce something special in the clutch momemts of a match.

Sounds like a player we could use.

And sometimes they just look shit house. :)

When Stephenson played forward last season he reminded me of Fyfe a lot in his draft years. Unorthodox playing style, skinny whippets and a few clangers thrown in but under all of this the talent is there; the reading of the play, the clean pick ups, the hunger for the contest, the direction they naturally turn their body when confronted to give themselves optimal time etc.. You can see glimpses of it and you say to yourself the way this kid currently plays is hindered almost solely by his bodies limitations... you have to imagine what they could do with an AFL players body and take the gamble that they will be able to fill out enough. Stephenson much like Fyfe was will be a high risk-high reward selection... but he could be the best player to come from this draft if it all come together.

I hope Hodge helps with keeping whoever we pick..

I hope he scares them all into re-signing.

Telling Hodge you are quitting the club to bugger off to mummy's home cooking is unlikely to get you a pat on the back and a fond farewell, good bloke or not.

Honestly, who gives a shit what they say in a one off interview? This board loves broad assumptions regarding player personality etc. Lemme tell ya, 90% of it is complete rubbish. Saying the right thing in an interview is easy for some, hard for others. None of it has anything to do with their playing ability or their on-field persona.

This isn't really a shot a you, just a bit of general frustration at something that bugs the shit out of me.

The going missing part could also be looked at differently in light of the previously (and perhaps still) poor endurance.

Yeah a genuine match winner is something we've been missing for a while. Hipwood is sort of developing into a player with that potential. Zorko kind of has it in him but not quite at that elite level that the likes of Dusty, Buddy and Dangerfield have. We need someone with the ability to single handedly turn a match in our favour.
