Worth remembering too that this isn't Twomey's phantom draft, it's just who he rates as the best players. Phantom draft comes later

I know you didn't ask me, but I'll chime in considering they're my two favourites. I think Smith is more of a sure thing to become a gun AFL player, and I'd say he's perhaps the 'smarter' footballer of the two. Whereas I'd argue that, if both players reach their potential, Draper might be a better fit in terms of our skill deficits (while Smith is also pretty quick, Draper explodes out of stoppages and carries the ball more). Smith's disposal might (?) be a bit cleaner at this stage, but the metres gained damage will come more from Draper.

I'd be thrilled with either though.
Pretty much exactly how I feel. I think Smith is safe as houses, safest pick in the entire draft. I think Draper has a bit higher ceiling but a lower floor than Smith. Draper fits a bit better cause of his burst but its not like Smith isnt twitchy and cant run either. I really wouldnt care which.

I doubt we'd split pick 5 if anything we would be trading picks to get to pick 5, not the other way around.
Yes I agree they would, just sharing what I'd like to see. Hoping a team gets carried away and offers overs for a pick. Even sliding pick 9 back a couple of spots to get an early second rounder is appealing as I think we can still get a player we want and another quality player with it. Just where I see our list at.

Draper and Smith are the two top, but the way Draper moves through and out of the contest is unreal, plus he looks to have good vision and skills to really set a team up offensively.

Smith looks like a safe bet to accumulate a lot and use it well, no doubt looks like he will be a good player. Draper looks like he could be the kind who can just take a game away from a team though.

I shouldn't get excited though, could see both falling to our pick and us taking Armstrong somehow.

From the Age.

Melbourne

Arrivals: Tom Campbell (free agency), Harry Sharp (trade)
Departures: Angus Brayshaw (retired), Ben Brown (retired), Kyah Farris-White (delisted), Lachie Hunter (retired), Alex Neal-Bullen (trade), Josh Schache (delisted), Adam Tomlinson (delisted)
Draft picks: 5, 9
Uncontracted: Marty Hore, Joel Smith
Contracted: 37 (no category B rookies)
The Demons addressed needs in the player movement period, adding ruck depth (Campbell) behind Max Gawn before trading for Sharp, who will get the chance to replace Neal-Bullen in attack. They have two first-round picks, as they did last year with Caleb Windsor and Koltyn Tholstrup, and will make three selections overall. Melbourne may not place a bid on Essendon’s NGA prospect Isaac Kako after trading for the Bombers’ pick nine. Midfielders Harvey Langford, Sid Draper and Josh Smillie could get through to their first selection, while key forward Harry Armstrong, defenders Alix Tauru and Luke Trainor, and classy midfielder Xavier Lindsay might be in the mix at their second pick. Hore will score another one-year deal, but Smith will be delisted. Judd McVee will be upgraded to the primary list, and Andy Moniz-Wakefield can no longer be a category B rookie.

I think we should take the player who ends up being the best, not that ****ing hard 🎓
Well, we are picking after Adelaide and then the saints who sure have found that hard to do which bodes well for us...

Although pick 9 came from Essendon so may be cursed already.

If we take Smilie at 5 and then Trainor at 9 I'm getting the pitchforks out.

I know everyone thinks they have found next Bont but Langford gives me those vibes , I really rate his kicking aswell.
After being against any big body mids I have really come around to him for that same reason. Has a nice kick.

He can go long and penetrating but often see him lowering the eyes for the shorter pass or 45 degree inside kick and shows a lot of composure. While not quick, I wouldn't say he is slow and his 2k time trial was pretty good so can clearly cover the ground. Also like that he kicks goals, his height makes him dangerous up forward where he will need to spend some time early in his career.

He doesn't have the dynamic forward attributes of Trac but is a more natural mid at this stage than he was. He already has more strings to his bow than Oliver. If we draft him and he adapts to AFL pace ok then the club is far less likely to cling to Oliver.

Unfortunately I doubt he will last our pick but would likely push Smith or more likely Draper to us anyway so can't lose.

A Langford at 5 and Reid at 9 combo would be pretty special.

What a flog, I really wanted us to select him at #5 before this but now im out
Such lies. If I recall correctly you wanted to trade 5 & 9 for pick 1 just to guarantee getting him. Generational talent you said. Big body mids only apply you said. Wouldn't even offer a puny player like Reid a rookie spot you said. I could be wrong though...
