And if we only dealt with fantasy we could start a book club.
As usual the truth lies somewhere between.
Hence
Buckley haters = Leon loved Mick and hated the succession plan. Wouldn't take a pay cut for Bucks but would for Mick coz Mick is a much better manager of people.
Buckley lovers = Leon had it good for a long time, time to take a hit for the club. Bucks wanted him to stay but Leon would rather play for 50 grand than 200. Was done anyway.
The Middle ground = Leon wasn't sure what he wanted to do as he'd suffered another GF loss and questioned whether he wanted to go through the grind again. The club had to make a tough decision about personnel and finances. In the end, the longer term future won out. Leon wasn't happy, tested the waters, too cold, retired. Thought he'd get a better deal with Mick at the helm, Walsh may have had something to say about that.

Yep the most likely scenario, lots of factors involved - reality is rarely simple and most people are influenced by a lesser or larger degree by their personal biases. Logic is important but often overriden by desires.

Yep, I would love for the club to come out and lay it all on the line regarding the events of 09 all the way through to the end of 2013.
Real conversations between MM and Ed.
Was there really a petition or talk of one?
Did Daisy really do his best to destabilise the playing group in protest.
Did Bucks approach Ed to extend MM's coaching tenure?
Was Heath just dumb or did he join Daisy in the revolt?
Was Bucks' approach that hard that players just couldn't handle it?
Did MM's disregard for player off field indiscretions create such massive issues that players were becoming a liability to the club?
Is Bucks really a coach who refuses to listen.
Did Bucks really undermine a premiership window purely through trying to rid the playing group of anything slightly resembling MM's style and game plans? Is it selfishness guiding Buckley's coaching?

Of course it won't happen and I don't really want the club to do it. It would destabilise. I wouldn't mind someone messaging me the answers though. Haha!

Sounds like the makings of a great movie or book (fictional)....we could call it "All the president's men" or "Eddiegate"

Exactly. The contract offered was an insult to Leon Davis the person and his whole football career.

It was still better than the contracts that the other 17 clubs offered him.

The truth lies somewhere between fact and fantasy?

There's a Malthousism if ever there was one! :D

I guess they thought that they overpaid him in years prior.

He was an AA in 2009 and was a solid contributor in 2010. In 2011 had a career best season in 2011 and got another AA.

IIRC at the time Leon's offer was around $200-$250k. Leon wanted $350k. So no deal was done. I.e. He would only play on for more money. Leon nominated for the PSD, so he wanted to play on if the money was right. No other club was willing to pay what he wanted. At Leon's age, he probably didn't really want to play on unless he received a really good offer. Fair enough for Leon but perhaps clubs, including us, realised that his heart may not have been in it even if he did play on.

My assumption at the time was that we got caught out basically. We hadnt expected leon to continue, and needed to use all our salary cap to retain the guys we couldnt do without. By the time Leon said he wanted to continue, there was nothing left. We only had the capacity to retain Macaffer because he left in the end, and we didnt want to lose either but our salary cap was at the point Essendon reached after 2001 where they lost a few guys because holding their core together cost them dear.

I dont know why anyone feels the need to make it more complex or emotionally loaded than that.

Haha
His greed was an insult.
I loved Leon's 2011, finally he was facing the right way when he got the ball to hit up targets.
But I celebrated the day that "Magic the GF jinx" left the building.
