So you can punch someone in the face in AFL footy?

Don't confuse combat sports with contact sports.

Basketball is a contact sport. Do you reckon anyone cares whether Ja Morant weighs more than Draymond Green? It's irrelevant.
You can bump, tackle and wrestle in AFL, weight is relevant.

Wrestle??

You can't wrestle in the context of combat sports in AFL.

You can kind of 'wrestle' in the context of sumo - but they don't have weight classes. They don't have weight classes because technique is relevant to the outcome, not their weight.

Even bumping isn't relevant to weight. Giansuricasa knocked out Koschitze. Byron Pickett took guys out all the time, regardless of the weight difference.

As for tackling, what the f**k does weight have to do with tackling?

I'm still yet to see what value knowing a player's weight adds? In isolation, it's a completely useless piece of information.

I can understand how it is of interest when looking at draftees on paper, and also how their weight increases over time as they develop physically - but outside of that, it's just irrelevant.

Fwiw player weight is still available on the club/afl apps

Not sure if Cornes has done what he does best and manufactured some outrage over the weights only not being published in the season preview magazine and afl records

Sumos don't have weight classes because the sport is old AF and they're all as big as they can be as weight has a huge bearing...

Yes there are occasions where smaller players take out larger ones, they're outliers and they're not a reason to think weight is irrelevant. It's actually a reason to display weight so you can analyze the ceiling of the smaller players power ...

And what about all the other tonnes of arguments? You going to ignore those? Or just pick the ones where you can argue over insignificant details.

Lol, and then at the end you've listed a reason to keep it

Give me a reason not to keep it.... And saying the data isn't 100% correct isn't a reason.

Weight has very little to do with strength, size, and power.

I weigh more than plenty of AFL footballers, and I'd bet they'd destroy me contests.

Weight, in isolation, means fu**all.

As for your last comment, I'm not sure of the point or relevance?

I'm not arguing to keep it, or get rid of it. I can't think of a reason to get rid of it. But I don't see it as any sort of loss to not have it. It's a useless stat, that in isolation (which is how it is presented) is irrelevant.

The reason I listed to keep it, is invalid the moment the guy walks into the club - because you can see him. It gives some insight before you see them, as you'll generally know if they're big or small. But in isolation, again, it offers very little. You don't know if they're short and fat, tall and skinny, or muscular. Do they have a big upper body and tiny legs, or massive legs and chicken wing arms.

Once they set foot on the field, you can see for this for yourself. Their weight offers no insight.

Does anyone else think this has the whiff of a Laura Kane decision with a subconscious female bias for the AFLW? She can't politically do it for the women's game only, so she needs to do it across both leagues. I can see more AFLW players finding it concerning (particularly the "overweight" ones) moreso than AFL players.

Coincidence this comes out the first time we have a female leading the football side of the game or is this driven elsewhere?

Sure she can. The men are professional athletes paid a sh*t tonne of money compared to the women's comp which is amateur in comparison.

The AFL needs to shift its headquarters away from the Socialist Hellscape of Victoria as a matter of urgency. /s
LOL.
Queensland should just join the US so it can suck Trumps ****.

Can we just lol at his comment a bit longer please? Weight is irrelevant to tactics... but clubs should keep weights secret to interfere with opposition tactics...

This is getting so sad it's hilarious

I think he said that weight is not relevant - but physical attributes and abilities are, and these should be kept.

That's how I read it.

Nothing personal, I'm from Queensland.
Just seems to have been over run by redneck halfwits.

And weight is not a physical attribute...

We'll no, not really.

Definition:

a quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone or something.

Your weight isn't an attribute. Your weight may be impacted by your attributes though.

As I've said many times, weight, in isolation, doesn't tell us anything.

If you've spent any time whatsoever in a gym you'd have seen this type of thing all the time:

The same weight, but very different attributes and characteristics.

How much you weigh, means fu** all.

You cannot seriously contend that weight doesn't matter in a sport characterised by speed, power and acceleration

In any case, no stats in isolation tell us anything, that's no reason to get rid of them

Still haven't read one good reason for this here

Who has ever been harmed by publication of AFL players' weights?

Weight may matter, but as I've said it's about 5th or 6th in line in terms of importance in footy. Technique, experience, balance, size, and effort all trump Weight.

The stat in isolation means nothing. In isolation it doesn't tell us if they're fat, tall, muscular, top heavy, bottom heavy, etc. Therefore, whilst speed, power and acceleration are key parts of footy - someone's weight in isolation gives no insight into any of this.

It means absolutely nothing.

And yes, I agree that pretty much all stats in isolation mean nothing. I've been saying that on here for years.

As for reasons to stop publicising a player's weight - as I've previously said, I don't have one.

I'm fairly certain this is simply a move to mitigate the imminent 'but the men do it!' argument when they stop publicising women players' weights.

I do believe that not publicising the women players' weight is a good move FWIW.

Laugh away if you want. Its your life.

Of course its irrelevant.

Ever play a hard game of footy? You should lose at least a kilo or two if you tried hard enough. I lost 3 kg at a Ministry gig once and it only lasted an hour.

The only way weight would be relevant is if every player weighed in before games like a boxer. But it, like other data, should be kept secret if clubs want to because its their business not everyone else's.

One final point that you probably don't understand - opposite ideas can both be correct. It seems counter intuitive but only cos you were never taught to think properly. People who can't cope with that concept don't really have minds capable of dealing with reality (yet - everyone can learn and improve, so get to it. :p )

There still have been no rebuttals, no evidence of ongoing harm, just a bunch of sad numerophobes acting out and scoldily trying to tell us what we should and shouldn't be interested in and how to consume football, I've never seen a collective meltdown like it, and meanwhile you can still get weights off the AFL website so all good

Either have I.

"Oh No!!! The AFL won't tell us some number vaguely related to a players weight so we can then ignore it while we watch the game!!!"

"Its political correctness gone mad and I blame Laura Kane and all women everywhere! If only they'd stayed in the kitchen (where they're useless anyway cos all the great chefs are men.)"

Your team are reigning premiers and you carry on like this... no wonder your cobbles are made of corn.
