Well it isn't really that hard for him to be tough, he has a massive body!

From the OP

that psychotic player from past or present that has no regard for his personal wellbeing what so ever

Tom Logan isn't much of a footy player as far as skills go but he fits in here, and after the Carlton game where he nearly broke his neck and the Freo game where he got absolutely crunched by Solomon and then got up and made a spoil 30 seconds later so does Paul Stewart. Pity some of the senior players other than Wilson don't always follow the young kids' examples. On a different topic, Matt Thomas loves inflicting pain on other people.

jared crouch - nearly 200 games straight until injury finally got him.
daryn cresswell - the image of him knocking his kneecap back in place at geelong.
paul kelly.
brett kirk.

I wouldn't say he (Koschitzke) loves pain, he's just injury prone.

Also has absolutely no awareness out on the field. Looks lost all the time.

However, it does take a fairly psychotic person to try and headbutt Jeff White's foot while he's trying to kick..... ;)

i was about to post the riewoldt mark too. I will never forget that mark. Permanent respect for that guy.

There've been some great contributions to this thread.

Gentleman Jim Hird is my fave player i've ever seen because of the extraordinary amount of courage he showed given his body size. That facial fracture was extraordinary.

And Garry Hocking is a great call. It seemed every week during those last few years of his the number of injections he was having in his knee just seemed to rise. I can only imagine how screwed that guy's knees must be now.

Another great nomination not mentioned yet would be Daniel Chick. He absolutely loved the physical stuff. I think the loss of him was as big a factor in the Eagles' decline as any.

Francis Bourke and Dipper were a little before my time, so i'll have to take your guys' word on that.

But i would say today I'd go Salopek and Luke Ball. Neither are glamorous about it but they both really do seem to relish punishment - and i mean taking it, not dishing it out. (Whereas with C. Brown it goes both ways)

And in the 18 years i've watched AFL i reckon Wade Chapman is the best call. He was an absolute freak. I loved the little guy so much. He must have had at least 150 games taken off his career because of his suicidal courage.

The footage of Dermott in the 89 Grand Final running in slow motion to the goal square after being pole axed by Mark Yeates is etched on my memroy.

Yet to be mentioned. Mark Harvey was as brave as they came. All Australian Centre Half back at 184 cm.

Dustin Fletcher

When he's not tripping opposition players like the coward he is, maybe.

For the Dockers, Shaun McManus (it's about the only thing he can do) - that mark he took in the derby a few years back was the most courageous thing I've seen on a football field.

Other than that, Campbell Brown would have to be up there.

Max Rooke? Are you serious? Agree with your other selections, but Rooke was absolutely slapped up in a big, big way by Goldsack and then Maxwell in the prelim, and in his following attempts at winning the ball had the odd look the other way.

Burnsy and Max for us.

You have got to be kidding me don't you?

It just shows how much football you watch or simply or simple you are.

Max Rooke is an animal. Hard as nails. Might not have the skills of some other players but no one goes in harder!

Campbell Brown broke his arm or dislocated his shoulder against Adelaide a few years ago (2003, IIRC) and then threw himself into a contest immediately to stop Nigel Smart taking a mark within goalscoring range without regard for his own wellbeing. That's why so many Hawthorn supporters respect Mad Dog for his toughness...

True? Well thats impressive.

I guess he's an irritating sort of player and I may have been unwilling to give him his due. I'll try to watch him more open-mindedly.

The Pies side of the late 80's/early 90's had some very hard pain-enduring fellas. Craig Kelly (walked off on a knee that needed a full reco), James Manson (played for years with a shot groin), Ron McKeon (had screws in his foot that burst through the skin every time he played), Denis Banks (another who played with broken bones, face and arm at different times IIRC).

There's altogether less pain in the game these days, so its hard to compare with the moderns..

Yeah as mentioned above Dermott played decisively with internal bleeding in 1989 GF. Although that was as much because he loved the limelight as the pain;).

2 players from a past era:

Craig 'Ned' Kelly - ran straight all the time, even if a freight train was coming at him.
Dipper - to play out a game after punturing your lung in the 1st quarter - heroic
