I shopped a lot at my closest EB (early 2000's until the late 2000's). The "managers" that were there in that time were awesome. I know good salesmanship rather than "friendship" but because I'd basically be there at the same time every week.... they looked after me with various deals and heads up on certain promotions (re: don't buy it now, wait till next week and it'll be cheaper etc). Also pre youtube walkthroughs I used to buy the game guide books with my new game purchases. They'd give me some for free (saves them throwing them out as well I guess) still took them haha.
I stopped going to EB "regularly" around 2008-9 for a variety of reasons (got games cheaper at a Harvey Norman for one thing). Still popped in every now and then to get an xbox/psn subscription card.... hate how it's more of a gaming "loot" place these days.... but in saying that I've usually found some gaming accessory in there that I otherwise wouldn't have purchased (Captain America wallet for the win hahaha).
I do wish EB would start trading/selling retro consoles Gamestop in the US sell retro games and consoles
I think that's their current strategy (being that Zing and EB are owned by the same people), many years ago they opened ZING stores and they were far better back then, being that the stuff they had was more high end - action figure replicas and the like. More "zing" stuff gradually got added to EB and EB has slowly reduced the amount of game software in their shops. The gamers loot is everywhere!!
But yeah apparently Zing stores will be further integrate into EB - it'll be more noticeable when the ZING stores start closing once their leases finish up. Although it'll be weird seeing it happen to the stores that are literally the shop next door to EB lol.

My local EB shut down a few months ago (which is a shame, apart from one flog - they were all cool people that worked there) and the next closest one has been a Zing/EB hybrid for the last couple of years.
Funny about 10-15 years ago, when I used to live Bayside VIC way, EB Southland used to be always busy and could hardly move (not sure if it's still the case) but now most of them here hardly get footy traffic on the weekend.
When you have JB/Amazon selling cheaper, plus the addition of subscription services like PS+/Gamepass, not a surprise really.
It's still a horrendously shit deal.

It looks pretty sad these days. It was my regular for so long as I lived just down the road in Mentone but less since we moved a few suburbs down the other side of Mordi. Occasionally I duck into Southland for something as I work just around the corner in Moorabbin and that EB is a shadow of what it used to be. Actually looks more like a Zing that sells a few games than an EB. The Zing that's near Big W in there always looks busier.
I think it's a very niche machine that won't make sense for most of the player base, but I don't think the price for performance is actually that bad at all.
Not when you trade more games on top of that, old broken controllers and even a OG switch. Ended up paying $80 of cash to upgrade and with stuff just lying around.
My original OG disc drive was sounding horrible and couldn’t read discs sometimes. I have had to pay an extra $160 to order in a disc drive but I can make that back on cheaper games.
It’s not really needed but the trade in deals make it too easy & a better value proposition. To add a 50% better graphics card in PC land is going to cost a lot more most of the time.
My bad, thought you were just talking about the price of the Pro and not the EB trade in - can't say I have a clue what that would go for on the resale market.
Another trick is to pay $25 for a 3 month eb games subscription and you get an extra 5% trade value.
I agree that it’s bloody steep if the trade ins weren’t available. I just don’t trust my OG PS5 to make it to the next gen & I’m basically getting what I paid for it back.

The Pro is already hitting a memory bandwidth bottleneck. Will be interesting if falling short of the performance targets only applies to Game Boost. I'm still waiting to see how future releases utilise the extra GPU headroom or if they too will be at the mercy of existing memory and CPU constraints. That's when I'll make my decision if I upgrade or not.
Also buying the disc drive if you don't want to get stuck with the rort that is PSN.
Fair enough if your PS5 is on the verge of death but otherwise it's just not worth it.

Was in there a few weeks ago, was the only person there. Can understand why, there was only this little pitiful section of a wall for PS5 games. Wasn't even worth going in in passing.
I paid $750 for the OG PS5 and the disc drive is nearly dead, no warranty. If I take off the $150 for the disc drive since mine is on the way out, I'm basically getting what I paid for the PS5 that is 4 years old. I'm also trading a dodgy controller that is on the way out and refreshing that with a new one.
If my future disc drive plays up, I can buy another and replace rather than the whole PS5 Pro (if they are still stocked, seems like a rort).
I also flipped my PS4 Pro for the PS5 and a heap of games and got it with no extra outlay at the time. These deals just seem crazy and worth it if you flip at the right time. Wait too long and they lose value. I've never got anything back on a PC but I usually have a big outlay then wait too long to refresh. I also can't be bothered selling privately so EB making it easy is probably the difference.
