Seems like only yesterday that the PS+ subscription was only $59.95 (ok it was donkeys years ago lol).

I'm subbed on Deluxe until next year (quickly went from the basic (which I had before the PS5 purchase) to extra then deluxe not long after getting the ps5), will evaluate what to do from that point, but will try to pay attention to when they have the specials during the days of play period.

For me I did get value for money (maybe not to the same extent as Game Pass) where I got to play many games I wanted to play.... but never actually purchased (Stray, Ghost of Tsushima, Demon's Souls - among others). There have been other games that were too expensive on the service, yet once I got to play it for free... I opted to BUY the DLC for the game to get more from the game itself.

Article has been updated with Aus prices now.

Guess I am ditching Deluxe now. Wish I could ditch it all together.

Absolutely ridiculous. I subbed for an extra year a couple months ago when a sale hit, which was around $100-110 for deluxe. So now whenever a sale hits, the price will be brought down to match the original price.

Agreed. Looks like its just basic on Black Friday sales from now on.
The retro line-up is a pretty big joke when you want to scratch that retro itch, not worth what they charge now let alone a price hike.

It’s so bloody horrible. There is literally no heavy lifting being done on Sony’s part, all they are doing is dropping a bunch of games onto the service and removing a bunch of games (sometimes quality games) from the service when they feel like it. And for doing the exact same thing they have been doing for the last year, let’s raise the price an extra $40+. Wtf?

I'm on delux because initially I took the discount and this year I was complacent and let it tick over. Back to essential for me but even that is overpriced. That's a 20-27% increase based on tier. At that price there would have to be serious consideration to starting including first party releases into it day one like Game Pass. I only have a PlayStation because that's where my family play and I'm not really into 90% of PS exclusives. I may consider not even bothering with PlayStation next generation if that's the kind of value they want to offer.

I've subscribed to the Essential tier for the past 5 or so years and tend to load up during Black Friday discounts etc. so it's probably cost me $50-60 per year to be subscribed through to 2027. I don't generally play online, but provided I get at least 3 games per year that I want to play I think it's worth it.

Monthly games that I've played during my subscription include:

  • Rise of the Tomb Raider
  • Erica
  • Fall Guys
  • Vampyr
  • Bugsnax
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  • Concrete Genie
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake
  • A Plague Tale: Innocence

I've also got the following monthly games in my backlog:

  • Middlle Earth: Shadow of War
  • Control
  • Oddworld: Soulstorm
  • Days Gone
  • Hitman 2
  • Kingdoms of Amalur: Rereckoning
  • The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners
  • Lego DC Super Villains
  • Persona 5 Strikers
  • Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep
  • Planet Coaster
  • Crash Bandicoot 4
  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon
  • Little Nightmares
  • LEGO Harry Potter Collection
  • Nioh 2
  • Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
  • Olli Olli World
  • Mafia: Definitive Edition
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure
  • Jurassic World Evolution 2
  • Dreams

There are some other monthly games that I would've played had I not already played them, including:

  • Hollow Knight
  • Maneater
  • Slay the Spire
  • God of War
  • Man of Medan
  • Trek to Yomi
  • Alan Wake
  • Death's Door

I reckon I'm well in front so far.

With the cost of living going up and up all the time, I wouldn’t blame anyone cancelling this or any other subscription service tbh. The only sub I have now is this and Optus Sport since I watch it every weekend. Even Kayo I couldn’t wait to un-subscribe to as soon as the AFL home and away season ended, the finals are all live on Channel 7.

Have barely completed some of the games on the service. Guardians of the Galaxy and Slay the Spire were the games I sunk the most time into. There's been a tonne I couldn't get into.

Will probably keep my subscription anyway for school holidays when I'm off work.

I think they've rested on there laurels given they have had the better run with exclusives, this is adding an air of arrogance.
Once XBOX lifts there game with exclusives, starting with Starfield, (they shot themselves in the foot only allowing games that will be compatible on both series S and X,), this price gouging will really hurt Sony in the long run.

Is Saints Row worth playing? Heard it wasn’t fantastic but as a freebie I might have a look at it

Yeah same boat, as a freebie I'll give it a whirl.

It's time for people to seriously consider moving to PC. Consoles might have a cheaper entry price but once you're in their closed ecosystems your just going to get fleeced. Imagine what these prices are going to look like next gen.

Agreed. Never liked PC gaming but now that consoles are seemingly headed down the path of extortionate digital-only marketplaces, and they no longer have the benefit of protection from PC-based cheaters, I don’t really see the point of continuing with them. The major incentive of exclusive games is slowly fading away - all of the Xbox exclusives are on PC, and Sony seem to be pushing all of their exclusives onto PC too.

I’ll probably just go for a mid tier PC and a secondhand Nintendo console (hopefully with modding capacity).

Given the amount of backlash and amount of places you can read of people cancelling their Plus sub fullstop, I wonder how long it takes Sony to offer Plus on "sale" for the previous prices.

Not long I would think. It’s like “Thank you Sony, I am really happy I can purchase another sub for the original price.”

They usually discount around Black Friday anyway. I'd imagine they'll ride it out until then, then give us a Black Friday "deal" at the old prices (if you're on a renewal the price doesn't go up until November anyway).

Plus with a 30% increase, unless 1 in 4 people cancel they won't really notice the difference anyway. And even if you cancel now they won't actually feel it until you're due for renewal.

They will have seen the Netflix thing. Short term social media rage and angry cancellations ultimately end up picking back up as the world moves on. And with an annual subscription they'll feel it even less than Netflix did.

The prices went up September 6. The November date is a grace period for renewals to tick over. Providing a black friday discount might be a kick in the teeth to everyone who renewed in November which will be a lot of subscribers who have been on Plus since PS3 (when it was announced it would be used for online play on PS4) so I'm anticipating a Christmas "sale" (old prices).

Just had a look through the collection to find a new game to play. Pretty slim pickings. They've upped the price and have fewer quality games. It's like they want people to cancel their subscriptions!

Even the games on sale are average.

I have Deluxe as it wasn't much extra when it switched over, have it set to drop to Extra when it renews in November, but if it stays like this I'll be dropping it down to Essential.

Sony are really taking the piss here.

Mine renews in January thankfully so have some time to make a decision, but yeah, considering dropping down tiers also as the catalogue is just not there to warrant the cost.
