Hi everyone, please see below the new Melbourne Board rules that apply from today (7 December 2024).

1. Posters must adhere to BigFooty’s Terms of Service.

Specifically, posters must not use the service to submit or link to any content which is:
  • dangerous to health, anti-vax, COVID denial etc,
  • hateful, including sympathetic discussion of far-right/neo-Nazi tropes,
  • misinformation or disinformation,
  • defamatory,
  • threatening,
  • abusive,
  • bigotry,
  • likely to offend,
  • spam or spam-like,
  • contains adult or objectionable content,
  • risks copyright infringement,
  • encourages unlawful activity (including illegal drug use, buying, selling etc),
  • or otherwise violates any laws,
  • or contains personal information of others.
2. Copyright Material

As publisher of your posts, please be aware that you could be held liable should you post material belonging to a third party.

Fair dealing in many jurisdictions allows for a small amount of a work to be reproduced for a number of purposes, including parody/satire and criticism or review.

BigFooty’s Terms of Service forbid posting material that may be considered a copyright infringement:

No illegal content; respect copyright owners.
  • No hacks, torrents, file swapping, or requesting of same from us or other users.
  • No illegal match video or audio streams, or requesting of same from us or other users.
  • Articles from other sites should be limited to a relevant paragraph or two and a link to the source.
Material that is reported as infringing a third party's copyright will continue to be removed. Repeat infringements will continue to see members have their access limited or permanently removed. Members should check their posts for content they believe or know to infringe the ownership rights of others. People who believe their rights have been infringed should report the content with the Report Post button, or via the site contact form.

3. Melbourne Supporters

3.1. Audience and Topics

This board is primarily for the discussion of MFC-related matters by Melbourne supporters. Off-topic discussions are welcomed—but not strictly limited to—threads such as ‘Random Chat’ and those that are contained in the 'Hell' sub-forum. Political chat is welcomed in the Random Chat thread; however, off-topic political discussion elsewhere will be removed, with users directed to visit the 'Society, Religion and Politics' forum. Repeated off-topic derailing of threads may be met with warnings and/or infractions.

3.2. Threads

Your moderating team will post weekly content such as match previews, game day and review threads; however, users are encouraged to create new threads where they see fit. If you’re posting a new thread, please consider whether that content can be added to an existing thread first (i.e. put news about a specific player in their respective ‘Player Watch’ thread). If not, post away.

3.3. Competitions

Competitions will be run periodically on the Melbourne Board, with all Melbourne supporters encouraged to participate. Each competition will abide by the rules posted in the respective thread at the time of commencement.

3.4. Treatment of Other Users

We enjoy a board with a diverse group of contributors and many different opinions. Debate is welcomed—and encouraged—as long as people are treated with respect. Targeted abuse, undermining and bullying of individual posters will not be tolerated – play the ball and not the poster.

Remember that everyone is different and we’re not all at our best all of the time. Banter can be fun, but can also be misinterpreted as abuse/bullying.

People in our community are generally tolerant, understanding and helpful – if you feel comfortable doing so, you can always privately contact the respective poster and/or a Moderator about anything said that bothers you. The same rules apply in private conversations as elsewhere. No abuse – be considerate and respectful.

Additionally, trolling or repeated acts of contrarianism designed to bait posters into responses is not permitted.

Posts that violate BigFooty and/or Melbourne forum rules will be removed and possibly incur infractions. Repeat offenders may receive board/site bans.

3.5. Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, Transphobia, Body Shaming et al

We have a zero-tolerance policy for bigotry on the Melbourne Board. Posts that breach this policy will be hastily removed and may lead to serious infractions or bans for offending users. If you’re unsure whether your post will constitute a breach, it’s best to just not post it (or privately message a Moderator to discuss).

3.6. The ‘Report’ Function

If you feel that a user has crossed the line and violated BigFooty/Melbourne Board rules, please use the ‘Report’ button, rather than engaging in a public argument. Our Moderating team will endeavour to respond to your report as soon as possible.

3.7. The ‘Ignore’ Function

Please utilise the ‘Ignore’ function on BigFooty if you would prefer not to read posts by another user. This will mean that their content is hidden from your view – it’s a great tool if you find another poster irritating, or if you find it difficult to resist engaging in back-and-forth arguments with them that lead to threads being derailed.

You can access this function by clicking on the respective user’s profile.

3.8. Club/Player Criticism

We have endeavoured to create a board culture where objectivity is encouraged. Posters are welcome to critique any aspects of the club that they see fit (where appropriate). Similarly, posters who tend toward more parochial supporting tendencies are welcome. Where we draw the line is attacking other users for their position on this spectrum.

4. Opposition Supporters

While our board is primarily for Melbourne supporters, opposition supporters are welcome to visit and post in threads that are not marked ‘MFC Fans Only’, provided they adhere to our board’s rules. Content such as the following is not welcome, and will be met with infractions and/or board bans:
  • Trolling/baiting – did your team beat Melbourne? If so, congrats! Don’t post here during or after the game.
  • Report spamming
  • Abuse/bullying
  • Bigotry.
An opposition poster who thinks they are being baited or subject to unwanted tagging from a Melbourne poster on our board can contact our Moderating team and we will respond to your concern.

5. Moderation

Our Moderating team reserves the right to edit/remove any posts that they feel breach BigFooty/Melbourne board rules. Warnings/infractions are given at the discretion of the respective Moderator.

We're only human and we make mistakes sometimes – if you think a Moderator action is wrong, unreasonable, or disproportionate, you can contact the Moderator to discuss. If for any reason you don’t want to discuss that Moderator’s action with its author, you can also contact a Super Moderator or Administrator (Chief, Wosh, Gralin, _Mike_) to discuss.

This rule applies to all Moderator actions. Do not use the Melbourne Board to discuss issues with moderators that occurred elsewhere on BigFooty. Take your issue directly to that Mod, a Super or an Admin.

Similarly, if you have any concerns with how the Board is being run, please contact a Mod, Super or Admin. Don’t post it in threads, it won’t end well.

6. General

This is a terrific board that has seen the many highs and (even more) lows of the Melbourne Football Club over numerous decades. How enjoyable the place is depends solely on how our users treat it – good faith humour, differences in opinions and passion are what makes our board great, so take ownership in fostering the sort of community you wish to be a part of.

If you need anything from us (of if you have any feedback on these rules), please contact the below:

Scythe94 (Moderator)

Dancing Potato (Moderator)

Headless (Community Leader)

Many thanks,

Your Moderating Team
