Expansion PNG Joins NRL .......... Options For AFL ??

Rubbish, there are clearly a number of people in this thread that's political affiliation to Labor outweighs looking at this objectively. You guys should be in the politics thread campaigning there instead.

I'm still waiting to hear how the extra $310 million given to the NRL clubs in Aus and Pacific development helps Australia? I mean it's only $310 million, more than triple the afl's annual spend on grassroots development across our entire country, in some places where the Aussie dollar is worth triple the amount of the local currency too.

I have no political affiliation to Labor at all in fact I don't even vote Labor.

But I am a logic person and there is no logic that a team in PNG makes the NRL more money than an extra team in Perth or QLD especially or anywhere else in aus. So if you think Labor is trying to do the NRL a favour they have done it in the most ineffective way possible.

They are not trying to help the NRL they are trying to pork barrel PNG because of China-personally I think that's a dumb idea but that's clearly why they are doing it.
You have been explained this before but you have trouble accepting what is clearly obvious fact.

I'm a Labor guy, but I think you've hit the nail on the head here. Even I can acknowledge the prime minister likely threw in a few hundred million $ extra because rugby league is his favourite sport and he likely wants to strengthen it internationally. This was a good opportunity to do so while piggybacking off diplomatic relations.

That’s Vlandy’s making the AFL look stupid. The AFL should’ve been able to get a much better deal for Tasmania from the national government imo.
Without doubt the government funding is excessive but the actual side is a great idea from them. The cherry on top was V’landy’s getting through tax free contracts rather than salary cap concessions. Absolutely taking the piss with that move.
V'landys is a very smart operator and you underestimate at your peril.
Think Demetriou for the AFL and then think V'landys for the NRL.

Lol pull the other one.

They are still going to get their extra team in Perth and possibly Brisbane on top of this anyway. This ensures a pipeline of players to fill those 20 teams, because barely anyone in Australia wants to play rugby league anymore, outside of local polynesian's. If this ridiculous funding can't produce a truckload of players that already have rugby backgrounds, from a $250 mill investment into grassroots development, then something dodgey is going on.

Anyway, you didn't respond to this part when you replied to my post?

I agree Vlandy's leaves the AFL's diabolical chairman in his dust, but there is a massive advantage when you have the prime minister being a rugby league super fan, regular lunch catch ups with the p.m in Sydney and are able to have his ear on 'not helping out the afl too much, as they're our main competitor'. There's a reason Albanese demanded 'a bigger contribution from the AFL', off his measly 240 mill infrastructure pledge to the Hobart stadium, he was likely keen to drain the coffers, coz weakening the afl's bottom line helps the nrl close the gap.

Besides a the clubs getting a cash injection, I don’t see how this helps the NRL.
It will bring average crowds down
It will thin out the playing ranks
It will likely see the PNG team uncompetitive for a long time, meaning more one sided games
The fete of the team lies with the government of a corrupt third world country

Happy to do something to help minimise China’s influence in our region, but not sure it actually benefits the NRL.

Precisely this.

The PNG team still has to play 11 or 12 away games throughout the year.

Those are away games that are taking away from a Sydney team hosting another Sydney team with a derby crowd and competitive game, a theoretical possible top of the table clash on a Thursday or Friday night that would have been played, etc.

There are 100k png citizens living in Australia, so they'll get some away attendances. Much like the nz team gets some of the best away crowds, but obviously to a smaller degree.

Aussie rugby league fans don't typically travel to away grounds a suburb away anyway, so I don't think it will make much difference to attendances.

Even if it fails, I'd prefer it to be a 300 mill failed venture over a 650 mill failed venture, as the extra 300 mill isn't needed. Well other than a golden handshake from Albanese to his favourite code and good friend Peter.

NRL & Australian Federal Government: Announce PNG team for NRL

People In PNG: We don't care.

Most People involved in Australian Rugby League: HTF is this ever going to be practical or cost effective?

Rugby Leage Supporters from North Sydney, NSW Central Coast, Perth, Adelaide & Christchurch: WTF?

People are increasingly buying Chinese cars, SUVs and trucks.
The solar panel market is almost 100% Chinese by now.
Hard to find a product that isn't made in China.
Then there's almost everybody gifting there social data to China.

All this petty episode can do is antagonise the Chinese government officials.
Poor move by one Australian government official.
