From the years after World War 2 until the early 1970s, there was Pakistan and East Pakistan, but they did not share a land or maritime border, and in fact had the large sub-continent country of India separating them. East Pakistan broke away from Pakistan and became Bangladesh from 1971 onwards.

At the time in Indian Independence, Mohammad Ali Jinnah wanted an Islamic nation to come out of the freedom fighting. So the English hired Sir Cyril Radcliffe to draw borders for the new countries. He had never been to the subcontinent. And was tasked with finishing the job within about 5 weeks. The lines he drew for India, Pakistan and East Pakistan weren’t officially announced until after Independence. This meant people/families had to cross border lines at a drop of a hat, as they decided which country to be part of, with many Hindus living in the newly founded Islamic country and vice versa. I personally have family friends that had to make this move. This whole situation resulted in many deaths and families still being split on the wrong side of the borders.
This border split has also resulted in the issues in Kashmir.
As for the Bangladesh independence, they were not happy with being ruled of “West” Pakistan, so fought a War with the West. India took the side of Bangladesh, which further caused more conflict with the now Pakistan.
Also, due to partition, Bangladesh and India’s borders became messy with inclaves and exclaves, where parts of Bangladesh were fully surrounded by India, and vice versa. The government has done a few switches of land, but still a few issues to go.
Bangladesh was previously known as East Bengal, and speak Bengali. The Indian city of Kolkata is in the state West Bengal, and also speak Bengali.

It's strange that partitioning wasn't successful when it worked so well in Palestine and Northern Ireland...

Agree.
The English have a way of leaving places in a worse condition than when they invaded. Particularly when it comes to dividing shit up.

Crazy to think the movement of people at partition was greater than the population of Australia at the time, something like 15 million people moved in a few weeks.
