My opinion is that we need someone who is comfortable with the position and who not only leads on the ground, but can do it off the ground too. Looking at the list of choices I was struck by how few of them I would consider as future captains. Not because of their playing ability, but the inability to rev up the side and get them going.
I picked Anthony Stevens because I think Carey will retire a season or two earlier, but David King would also be a possibility. Stevens is 30 and King is 29 so they aren't long term options and that is where our problem lies. I can't see any of the younger guys, with the leadership attributes, yet, that Carey has shown over the last nine seasons.
I don't think Colbert will ever get the Captaincy at North. With the exception of Barry Davis and a couple in our early days in VFL, North have always promoted their Captains from within. Someone who has come up through the ranks a North and has been enfused with the North culture since their teens, and while that may be a little difficult these days, I think we have enough young guys who have come up through the Reserves/VFL who the coach and current leaders can blood as potential leaders. That's why I think after Stevens and King have had their turn, the Captaincy of club will go to Harvey. He mighten have all the leadership attributes yet, but he has the talent, and confidence in his ability, and the other players at the club have confidence in him.
Whoever gets the job, will have big shoes to fill. Carey will go down in history as our greatest Captain and one of great Captain in VFL/AFL History.
I said Byron Pickett because of his ability to pump up the boys and that he has credibility and is a natural leader. At times can lose concentration but he should be able to grow out of this. David King at 28 may be a tad to old for the job.
When u say that Colbert is not a true and true roo, what whould u say about Shagga. Is he a potential captain????
