Review Positives and Negatives vs Adelaide - Round 5 2020

Big Sean is an odd one, don’t know if it’s my bias but I swear he almost always come home strong - when he actually makes it through the game.

Port last year where he annihilated Lovett and Ryder in the last and today where he was pretty good in the last. For whatever reason it doesn’t seem to be a pure fitness thing

The old adage, the longer the game goes the tall players don’t get any shorter but the game slows and he fits in better.

Big Darcy was important that last quarter or so. We got smashed around the ball again in the third.
It’s so easy to Understand why he’s not running out games, fitness etc.
He gets smashed by experienced rucks when he’s only 22. Sandi didn’t make his debut until 23.
Darcy gives the midfield a chop out. Would’ve been huge for us vs Gold Coast last week

Very happy for JLo to get his first win. Seems like a genuinely nice bloke.

I am reasonabley happy thus far. We are a young side that is missing key structural personal ie 3 KPD plus, for this game, our best player and captain.

The boys have been in every game so far and, but for lapses, could have had 3 wins so far. The youngsters all look very good at this early stage.

Two things to consider: We have played 4 of the top 6 sides so far and Saints next week will make it 5 and we have yet to play a home game.

A tough start for the boys but there are very +ve signs out there.

Positives
- Brayshaw and Cerra in particular given more responsibility and they answered. 5 tackles a piece as important as their possessions. Top two rated on the ground.
- Griffin ****ing Logue has officially arrived. Been pretty good all year and the last two weeks as the only guy above 190cm, he has held the backline together. If by some miracle we can get Pearce and Hamling on the park with them that backline will be something else.
- Tucker last quarter effort was sensational. Did go missing a bit in the 2nd or 3rd though
- Sturt is already one of our most important players. Clean and efficient. Think he is destined for the midfield personally since his game will translate well if he can put on some size
- Serong and Young continue to be solid contributors which is all you can ask for at this stage. Contribute most games with the odd stand out performance (Young last week).
- Most importantly, a ****ing win for the boys and coach to get some reward for effort.
- Aish clearly the best value we've got from a trade in a long time, unless Hogan sorts his shit out, he may be the best player traded in since McPharlin (as dire as that is)

Negatives
- 3 tall forwardline could be a long work in progress. 3 pretty selfish talls is going to be a struggle for a while
- While it's only Conca, ANOTHER injury.
- Diabolical skills in the 2nd and 3 quarter. Realistically, that is the worst we've played all year. Luckily, Adelaide are by far and away the worst team we have seen all year. They'll obviously win a game somewhere this year - teams always do - but they are very very poor.
- I keep waiting for Ryan to turn it around and get back to last year, he'll probably be better when two of Pearce, Hamling and Cox come in since I think he's currently having to take the 2nd biggest player.
- Bewley is my whipping boy and there isnt much that's going to convince me otherwise at this stage

Off topic a tad, but watching the Dees v Tigers, umpires are adjudicating totally opposite to how our game was umpired with the HTB decisions. They’re red hot in this one.

Clarkson had a whinge about it last week in his presser, they've been hot on HTB this round.

Aish clearly the best value we've got from a trade in a long time, unless Hogan sorts his sh*t out, he may be the best player traded in since McPharlin (as dire as that is)
stiff on Hamling imo

Mark Duffield: Old, new, and borrowed players help Fremantle Dockers avoid blues against Adelaide
Sometimes you just have to win. Fremantle can chalk their critical win over fellow cellar dweller Adelaide down to the old, the new, the borrowed and a top 10 draft pick or two.
It was the experience of David Mundy, not to mention a bit of brilliance from Michael Walters, that came to the fore in the last quarter after shoddy second and third terms had allowed Adelaide to draw level with the Dockers at three quarter time.
It was the energy of Andrew Brayshaw and the class of Adam Cerra midfield that stopped a turnover fest that threatened to let the Crows counter attack their way to a first victory.
And it was the defensive excellence of Griffin Logue - with a brilliant Hayden Young spoil for help, that enabled the Dockers to dodge a couple of bullets late in the game where there still would have been some nerves.
This game had a potential viewing audience of 80 million in the United States. Let’s hope the Yanks don’t hold it against us.
Before Adelaide surged in the third term, and Fremantle steadied in the last, it was hard to watch for long periods.
But the efforts of Brayshaw and Cerra will have made it worthwhile viewing for Dockers fans. They are the number two and number five picks from the 2017 national draft and it may have taken the absence of Nat Fyfe to get them to take greater responsibility.
Brayshaw got a Brownlow vote in round 19 last year against the Western Bulldogs for a 26 disposal and three goal game but you suspect this was his most important game for Fremantle yesterday. He finished with 23 disposals and five tackles. If Mundy, whose ice cool last term netted eight touched to finish with 25 doesn’t get three votes for this game, you would suspect Brayshaw will.
Cerra finished with 17, six in the final term when teammates were nervous. He has played some very good quarters this year then gone missing. He was steady across the game yesterday.
Logue deserves more credit than he has received this year. The Dockers have been without both Joel Hamling and Alex Pearce from the start and without Brennan Cox for the last two games. A couple of Logue’s efforts when it really mattered in the final term were imposing. He just knocked Crows out of the way and took control.
Walters, the other part of the old along with Mundy, had a poor first half but re-emerged as an influence after half time and took a last quarter screamer to kick a vital goal.\
That’s the old and the new. The borrowed? Think traded. Fremantle have been criticised for poor trading but James Aish looks a gain for the club. He was calm and clean with the ball again yesterday and Dockers fans who have seen their share of calamity prone characters over the years, will have a sense of calm when they see Aish with the ball.
The Dockers will face better opponents than Adelaide. Just about everybody is better than Adelaide right now. But this was just a win they had to have for the sake of their new coach and their season. They got it, without their captain and can move forward from here.

Not many players have the poise of hill in the back half, most would have blazed away in hope. Instead hill spins around onto his non-preferred delivers a perfect kick under pressure. Glad he is back out there moving well again love him :D

Not sure he is "moving well" yet, at least, not the Hill we are used to but his extra poise is noticeable. Hopefully he can string some games together

Fremantle have been criticised for poor trading

I wonder which columnist at the West has written the most columns recently about their poor trading, and on Duff and Quarters been using it to argue that Freo should commit to the draft and youth to rebuild rather then trying to trade in any big players to help Fyfe make one last premiership push?

Not that I disagree, but very interesting phrasing.

Every Fremantle Dockers player rated from drought-breaking win over Adelaide
Andrew Brayshaw 8: Imposed himself on game from start. Ten contested possessions amongst 23 touches to produce best game of career.
David Mundy 8: Veteran had massive second half with 17 of his 25 possessions, including game-high seven clearances. Coolness under pressure a feature of his game.
Griffin Logue 7.5: Defended with great vigour in breakthrough performance. Attack on the ball in second half critical to the victory.
Luke Ryan 7.5: Blanketed Taylor Walker with excellent defensive effort but also read play well to collect 12 intercept possessions.
Adam Cerra 7: Started brilliantly and was one of the main contributors with 16 disposals.
Michael Walters 6: Responded to quietest first half in nearly a decade with a brilliant display on ball and in attack. Last-quarter goal put icing on team effort.
James Aish 6: Wingman had better of Rory Sloane early and was important contributor with 19 possessions and five tackles.
Darcy Tucker 6: Resolute and steady display with 16 disposals and two important goals.
Rory Lobb 6: Strong in the air with several contested marks inside 50 but midfielders did not use him as target often enough.
Jesse Hogan 5: Sparkled at times without having great impact. Appetite for football appears to be restored.
Sean Darcy 5: Halved the ruck contests at best but was on field long enough for Rory Lobb to play mostly as key forward.
Nathan Wilson 5: Hardly a dominant presence but provided trademark rebound from half-back at times.
Caleb Serong 5: Energetic start helped Fremantle impose themselves early but faded and spent just over half the match on the ground.
Hayden Young 5: Excellent first quarter and bobbed up throughout game for 15 touches. Highlight was a critical spoil deep in defence.
Sam Sturt 5: Lively in flashes and handy enough with 11 possessions and a goal.
Lachie Schultz 5: Laid six tackles in muscular display but found the ball only eight times.
Stephen Hill 5: Started brightly in second game back before fading in second half.
Brett Bewley 5: Worked hard on wing without having significant impact. Five tackles underlined his work ethic.
Reece Conca 4: Busy in defence in first half before damaging hamstring in third term.
Ethan Hughes 4: Good first half and growing into role as reliable first-choice midsized defender.
Matt Taberner 4: Couldn’t find ball for three quarters but got busy in the last to be dangerous in front of goals.
Taylin Duman 4: Late inclusion for Travis Colyer and did little to shore up his position.

He's been beautiful to watch when he's been involved the last two weeks. His first qtr last week was brilliant, not just the usual silk but some gutsy interceptions in the air too.

I'm really hoping his body will let him have a late career resurgence in a lower intensity role in the backline. He doesn't need to play at a hundred miles an hour with his other attributes.

Watched the replay.

Well, a win. That is positive.

Not much else. 20 point win with the Crows missing half a dozen very getable shots at goal. They kicked one goal after the siren in 3 quarters of footy (you'd expect a 100+ point thrashing from that). Still they were in the game until Tucker kicked that goal with 5 minutes left.

To be honest, so long as there was lots of big hits, tackles, general body contact and long kicks, many of the North Americans that chose to watch (who would probably be mostly male) would probably have been relatively satisfied.

They would have loved that hit by Schultz!

Tabs worked hard in the final quarter. Walters and Tucker's goals got us up for the win

He was close checked up until then - but that still allowed Lobb and should have allowed Hogan some space. But q4 he got some nice seperation and good positioning, a shame about the 50 penalty, but I would hazard a guess that if the game was on the line he would have been more disciplined.

Thats the result of perhaps the worst talent id /mindless drafting and list management the league has seen consistently over a period time
To be fair, throw in the fact that we were very good 6/7 years ago so we couldn't draft the best kids, who by now would be in that 24+ age group.
