Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2008

Ta mate, I actually figured I was channeling your arguments ;).

EDIT: And yeah...presumably the bloke he was playing on was smallish. But nonetheless, CHB at 189cm and 17....

A couple of weeks back he was thrown onto Nick Gill (Adelaide's Nick Gill). While Gill had his way with him it does show the WWT coaching staff has some faith in the kid to go up against a guy on an AFL list.

Sure, he got beaten but that is good experience I think. It is an advantage that the SA and WA boys have over their Vic counterparts.

If the kids in SA and WA are deemed good enough, they play seniors against men.

Chris Hall played for the Eagles last weekend as well and kicked 4.

Chris Hall became Woodville-West Torrens 4th 'Coca-Cola Star Search Nomination' this year for his performance against West Adelaide last weekend.

Hall joins fellow nominees - Travis Lane, Jared Petrenko (Adelaide FC rookie) and Matthew Broadbent.

Just a quick one - Woodville-West Torrens Reserves played in the Elimination Final (which they won by about 7 goals).

Reading through some of the reports Travis Lane, Lee Staple and Matt Goldsworthy all played.

Lane kicked a couple, Staple played at CHF and presented pretty well (by all accounts) but the one who intrests me is Goldsworthy.

Came into the league side fairly late but appears to be pretty well equiped, especially if you take this quote into account.

"...“Matt is an exciting talent,” Eagles senior coach Ron Fuller explained. “My assistant Andrew Rogers likened him to Simon Black in the way he plays. He knows where to go and what to do. Matthew takes his chances and is very clean with the usage of the ball..."

Never seen this kid play and he is a bit on the short side for me (170cm) but that is a sizable wrap on a 17 year old.

The rumour is a West Coast scout was present having a look.

Any one out there with some contacts that might be able to dig a bit deeper in this one?

He sounds ok lol! to short though.

I'm doing Geelong in a mock draft game.

This is the update:
16: Matthew Broadbent (Will make a few happy around here)
34: Clancee Pearce (All Australian Back pocket who is quick and has great foot skills.

Last Pick: Ranga

What I'm getting next: A tall

Another update.

Added to that list:

Mitchell Friall - NSW player who has played footy for only 18 months. Athletic as and nice reader of the play. Runs hard and is 198 cm's. Looks a likely type.

Nathan O'Keefe: This is one of my insider players and will make an appearance high in my top 30 (Spoiler alert). Nice size lead up player. Has kicked 21 TAC Cup goals in 7 games, including a few big bags. Keep this to ourselves fellas.

Is that mature age bloke from Casey still around in it? If so, do you think it's a worthwhile investment?
Yeah still around... Doubt it. Has had a few issues, I think he is similar to when Greeves ran around in our team. Great VFL player, just wouldn't handle the step up.

Put a smile on my face.

Interesting draft game you're in. Saw Trengove and Lisle both snapped up prior to Geelong's first pick so obviously a couple of people think they go alright.

The loss of Nathan Ablett changes the list dynamic a little bit in my mind. Maybe Carey is half a chance to come to Geelong and he was being 'trialled' this year.

Intresting. I think Cahill might be an option as well.

Anyone else go tonight? Vague thoughts of who I was impressed with:

#2 Steele Sidebottom: Obviously turned it on for three quarters, gathering a cool 30ish possessions with 10 goals. Having that said exploited the total absence of a suitable match up for him in the forward line and probably should have kicked a few more.

#25 Jack Ziebell: The kid people turned up to see did the better part of bugger all during the game. Had some strapping on his knee which could explain his almost total absence from the game - not that he was really needed.

#3 Jamie Sheahan: He's probably too small to make a go of it at AFL level but jeez I love watching this kid play. Has a bit of toe and always seems to find space, but seems to love the contest as well.

#18 Tom Rockliff: While I would be devo that we missed out on Lisle (;)), a few drafts have this kid falling to us and on the back of tonights performance would be pretty pleased. Was in line for BOG before Sidebottom turned it on - played a similar game in many respects, dominating up forward as well as finding it up the ground.

#35 Riley Milne: The poor mans Jordan Lisle? 192 and skinny as a rake but beat his opponent and was willing to run hard out of defence.

The poor old Stingrays were simply outclassed; a few players showed glimpses (Savage, Gaertner, Scully) but in general had nowhere near the skill level or the size to compete with the Bushrangers.

Didn't see it as I was out but read the following day that Sidebottom kicked 10 and Rockliff (from memory) had been in the best players.

I gather you went jester? If so, I'm interested to know if Ashley Smith played and if so, how did he go?

And do I assume Milne is another 'lovechild' of yours now? :D

Don't know how comfortable I'd be with the name Milne down at Geelong

If he played, any memories of him were swamped in the grief of Saturday.

There can only be one...and now we're ahead of Hawthorn we'll hopefully get him ;).

I want Lisle in particular because he combines size with run. Milne is only ('only') 192 and is skinny as a rake; could be a good player in the future but would be undersized against the 'true' power forwards.

The little bit of Smith I've seen I liked, but it really was just a snippet so I've been reading others thoughts on him with interest.

Well, don't know if getting Lisle is worth losing a granny but I guess we are in a better position to make a play for him or Trengove.

Speaking of which, with N. Ablett offically leaving and after the, um, mis-firing forward line do you think another KP forward is now on the cards?

Personally, I'm still comfortable with Mooney, Lonergan, Hawkins, S. Simpson and co. but I'll watch the draft closely.

Looking forward to seeing what rizzo comes up with - I'm thinking Johnston is going to be high.

I'm not going to pretend that I know what I'm on about re: potential draft order, but I have seen a few of them play.

If Tom Rockliff can't make the top 30, then there is so very special talent up for grabs this year because that boy can play.

Good to see Ranga up there, given we are practically getting him for free. Hope he comes in and kicks an awesome goal or something next year and everyone complains that we rorted the system and that they never got a chance to draft him. That would make me LOL.

Nick Nat down the order is an interesting one (is he not supposed to be the greatest 'raw talent' we have ever seen?), infact Watts at 5 is interesting too, given that there has sort of been the 'big 3' all along.

Ty Vickery down the order too, I was under the impression he was top 5 potential. I spose the draft overrates tall players.

Greatest raw athleticism IMO, not as much football talent. It's the work ethic that makes people confident he can improve his football skills.

Rockcliff was only good in patches. Was great in the TAC cup, but when a lot of pressure was on him went missing. Also doesn't seem to have a lot of stand out attributes that a lot of people look for.

Ranga is a gun. Top twenty DP right there.

NN is probably one of the most overrated players I have ever seen. Will be found out at AFL level because he can't just jump over strong AFL smart ruckmen.

No Yarran also? Not keen on him?

Shout out to Ayce too, he's a good kid. Skinny as anything though.

Shit, thanks for that find. Not a bad player young Yarran ;)

Ayce is a gun :thumbsu:

As for Vickery, should be higher, just can't find the room
