All extremely fair, smart and impeccably skilled. Also, all have filled a variety of roles in defence.

Granted, one is retired, one is almost retired and one has a few good years to go.

I think the 3 true "quarterbacks" of the AFL in the last 15 years.

i think you should watch more football. Only McKenna would fit the mould of a 'quarterback' for me. it certainly isn't Hart, and I don't think Clement either.

Hart & clement similar players, mcKenna played a different role.

It has to be Bluey McKenna without question.
Yeah im biased, but i watch a hell of a lot of footy and i have seen all three blokes from the start of there careers, throughout there careers and to where they are now.

I rate McKenna very highly. For someone who 'watches a hell of a lot of footy', you sure struggled to notice how much better freo were than your guys on the weekend ;)

Bluey takes the biscuits in every area...

* Strength
* Skill
* Courage
* Ability to read the play

in every area? seeing as Hart is clearly much stronger than McKenna, and only bias would split them for skill or courage I don't see how it is in every area? McKenna is plainly a better reader of play.

The other two guys are wonderful players also (with Hart shading Clement IMO; even though i think Clement is more in the Kemp mould than Hart) but Bluey was just on another level im afraid.

McKenna is much like Dean Kemp; people over east simply didnt see him enough to realize just how bloody good he really was.

Dean Kemp stood KPP players?

Hart is stronger? hmmmm the tall skinny red headed guy who wears 34 you must be joking

Pound for pound - Clement is clearly the one who does not deserve to be rated alongside the other two.

Andrew McKay.

All Australian in his first season and pound for pound as tough as anyone who has played in the past 15 seasons. Voss said he was one of his toughest opponents but a fair player.

McKay would run through a brickwall to win the ball.

Yeah but McKay was always 'Diet Bluey', the 2nd best HBF in the 1990s. ;) :thumbsu:

Still always gets a spot on my team of the 90s half back line though.

Clement and McKenna are almost neck and neck.

Clement shades McKenna with his ability to neutralise forwards both tall and short.

McKenna shades Clement with his impeccable disposal and decision making with the footy.

If I wanted a player capable of shutting down a key position forward I'd pick Clement.

If I wanted rebound and creativity from defence I'd pick McKenna.

Hart a distant third.

McKenna then McKay, Hart, Hinkley then Clement.
If Clement stayed a Docker, he'd be nowhere!
The Victorian media (.......Eddie anyway) pump him up something shocking.
Sure he's good but the others were just brilliant players

A distant third?

Hart: 300+ games, 2 x B&F winner. 4 times all australian 2 x premiership player
McKenna: 260 odd games 2 x B&F Winner. 4 times all Australian. 2 x premiership player

slightly different players, Hart played taller, and McKenna played more as a creative type, but there isn't a lot to split.

I like Clement a lot too, but gosh he has a long way to go to put a player like ben hart - similar in many ways - a clear distance behind him.

Kenny Hinkley, now there is a name to be reckoned with. At his best, as good as any of these guys.

Brad Sholl was their quarterback though, and he did that role as well if not better than McKenna. wasn't much of a stopper though.

McKenna was one of the most respected players, let alone defenders, of the 90's. I remember a coaches survey in the mid 90's on who would be the first player they'd pick (IIRC) it was mostly split between McKenna and Carey.

I always thought that if I'd pick a half back line it'd consist of:

McKenna-Jackovich-McKay

The thing with Hart is that most of his best footy was played 8 - 15 years ago but he is still plodding on which is why most of the posters on here are going to rate him last, similar with McKenna played too long ago for many BF posters to remember, for mine

8-15 years may be a slight exaggeration. Only a slight one :eek:
