Dawes was never a Ruckman and that Destroyed his Career

It's an interesting myth Dave but a broken knuckle the more likely cause. That and a realization that despite a promising junior career, he was just a good ordinary footballer to start with.

I'm thinking no change. But we might see Adams in for Crocker.

It'll be interesting to see who Sidebottom goes to. I think Heppell sits too far off the back of the contest for us to waste Sidebottom on but he's dangerous nonetheless. He'll sit there racking up possessions (probably often dubiously counted as contested possessions) and working with Zaharakis and McGrath in handball chains until one moves it forward.

I'd actually like to bring Maynard up in stints to play on Heppell, if not for the duration of the game. Maynard might struggle fitness wise but should worry Heppell with his aggression to the contest and ferocious tackling. Heppell in my opinion is brilliant in space when they're 6 goals in front. You bring that back to a close, hard contest and have someone hang off him, he will end up with a higher disposal count than his metres gained count.

Another concern is McDonald--Tippungwuti. He'll kill us when he finds space. Not sure how to counter that. I'd probably put Crisp five metres behind him when he floats forward. Should be able to cover him in the air but the key will be curtailing his run once the pill hits the deck. If Crisp stays goal side, we might have hope in holding up the play.

And lastly Fantasia. 9 goals in his last two outings against us. Well, against Maynard. I'd hope Maynard is seething and desperate for another crack but should we send Maynard to the Midfield, Murray is our man.

Daniher is always a worry too but he's going to kick goals. We need to stifle their ball movement so he doesn't have it put where he likes it.

He was never the same after that injury.

Magpies lose Dawes to injury
Updated 4 Jul 2011, 1:04pmMon 4 Jul 2011, 1:04pm

Collingwood key forward Chris Dawes suffered a broken knuckle in the Magpies' 41-point win over Hawthorn and will be out for four to six weeks.

Dawes, who has kicked 21 goals in 13 matches this season, will have surgery on Monday afternoon.

He has averaged 15 possessions and five marks per match and was praised by coach Mick Malthouse after Sunday's triumph over the Hawks at the MCG.

The second-placed Magpies have a 12-1 record this season and face North Melbourne (10th) on Sunday at the MCG.

Dawes is second at the Magpies for contested marks this year with 21, behind fellow key forward Travis Cloke.

He didn’t ruck the night so not relevant

I'm not sure if you're referring to Cox because he's certainly rucked every game he's played this year.

I do find your Dawes comparison interesting but there circumstances are hardly similar.

Dawes came through all the elite junior pathways, was a highly touted junior who only slipped in the draft order due to a knee injury, generally played with Cloke and Brown type support tall forwards and 2010 (his 4th year on the list) and 2011 (5th) he was playing in a GF quality level side.

Cox has always played as KF/ruck, has just started his 4th year playing footy, full stop, and has never had the quality support Dawes had or the played in a side that's a patch on our 2010-2011 sides. He'll never be a high possession player but he's already match Dawes highest ever goal output of 4 goals.

If by seasons end, he can be averaging 10 possessions or more, 5-6 marks or more, 1.6-2.0 goals, along with his 10-20 hitouts, I'd say he's played his role, in much the same way Dawes did, just in a different way which is as you'd expect given its a different role.

Agree. Also think the knee injury in the TAC may have just dulled his full potential. Shame really because I really liked him.

So with players due back, where does that leave Smith? VFL?

I really can't see a spot for him in the seniors long term.
Depth.

Nothing more, nothing less I’d suggest.

Runs to the right spots, great attitude, does everything you ask, just not quite level of talent.
Great kid. Got so much out of himself.

The match up the cameras might be waiting for?

Hooker matching up with Cox.

What will dear old Bruce do with that?

No changes for mine.

Buckley will back in Langdon or Scharenberg to play on Stewart and Crameri and then have Dunn for Daniher with Reid or Howe or one of the forementioned. Could be a weak point for us but I think he is keen to back in that defensive 6 until Moore is back. Langdon is probably the one at the moment that is under pressure albeit get the impression coach loves his intercept and overlooks the other flaws.

Crameri, he has been at 2 clubs since Essendon, the Bulldogs and now Geelong!!

I had a soft spot for Dawes also......left Collingwood like a gentleman.

That would not of Helped.

I remember when it was Reported that I forgot who but someone said that Dawes would never be the same Player again and He was Spot On.

He was a Good Footballer. He was not Ordinary

It's a Jack Dyerism Dave to say "a good ordinary footballer" and doesn't actually mean your suggesting the player is ordinary.

I remember the during Trade Period he Left 2012 he walked out the Club Looking Very Pissed Off

Rightly so Dave......he still didn't bad mouth the Club.......like I said true gentleman.

True. Lynch was no Upgrade on Him.

We got Pick 20 for him and that was used on Broomhead
