To get that result we would have to play minimal developing players. Developing players make mistakes and get beaten physically. You have to accept them losing their position on the ground most of the time until you get them to 30 games, if not 50 games, unless they are a rare exception.

Plus, if you finish 9th or whatever you won't be getting any premium top 3 or top 5 draft picks.

Getting belted every week isn't a great environment for young players, but if we finish mid ladder playing lots of old players there are definate costs to that strategy also.

I would rather a bottoming out than a propping up because i think a bottoming out would inevitably have to follow a prop up anyway.

Playing young or developing players doesn't equal losing every week - unless we only prioritise playing youngsters and throw all of the veterans etc out of the side (clearly we aren't doing that, as we've just given some contracts rather than follow the Hawthorn route).

It will just mean that at times those developing players play in positions that are not going to be their primary spot going forward.

Hopefully Culley and Hewett rotate mid/fwd. Ginbey Fwd/back (with likely Shuey and Yeo). Long and Burgeil play mostly forward if they come in (possibly where they end up anyway, but that remains to be seen). Hough will play a bit of wing and a bit of back. Chesser, lets get him on the park, but likely another wing/HBF.

Are any going to dominate from day 1... probably not (gut feel says Culley may well do so, but technically this is his second season anyway!), but that doesn't mean they lose their battle on the day either. Breaking even is not a bad result for a youngster (and TBH for the whole squad after 2022!).

Nor Hurn. I expect he will be phased out of the League team this year. Gets first dibs but as the season rolls on, if he slows further this year I expect selectors arms will be forced and he will either retire mid season or finish off in the WAFL.
The thing with Hurn, is slowing down is literally a non-issue. He's already as slow as treacle.

If our youngsters actually have talent Simmo has shown that he'll fit them into the team.

Venners, Culley etc. Look how we bent over backwards to fit Oscar into the team despite not really having a place for him. I can't think of a single player that's been left languishing in the WAFL that has actually proven to be good in recent times.

The problem has always been our absolute dearth of talented youth. Thankfully that seems to have changed with the last few drafts.

Based on what precisely?

When, to date has Simpson, ever, prioritised youth over veterans irrespective of how those veterans have been playing?

Never
2018 debutants and youth were regularly injected into the side . In fact it was a renaissance after losing Mitchell and Priddis. The shenanigans of Waterman and Venables etc with their questionable goal celebrating may help you recollect. Redacted in his second year . Flying Ryan debuted . Oscar Allen debut even Brander had a go . Tom Cole got a very good run . So did Jackson Nelson . Debuting players in 2018 was an energiser to the team and refreshing for us fans . That's how I will remember 2018

Agree with both these points.

Ainsworth even attended a centre bounce and won a clearance with his very first touch in 2018. He stuffed the disposal, but still. This was when our midfield was at its best too, and we were on 10 game winning streak.

You're wrong on the first 3 counts. I'd prefer to have 3 seasons of pure shit before becoming the best team in the country for next decade.

Id say we are likely to be beaten in 75% of direct matchups. Yet Ginbey from day 1 off a bench provides more than AhChee did for an entire game. Long if he plays will only be slightly worse than what Langdon put out. That's how bad our last few picked have been.

Well we finished 17th we still only got effectively 2 picks in the teens. Hardly the premium talent there. Likely a top 2 would do it in 2023 but we wont be that terrible again. From that 4-8 range its generally just positional preference.

The cliff is coming😂 in 3 season then the oldies will all be gone. I'd hate to do a Melbourne (2010) and gift games. Leads to a weak club.

Question for those in the know re WAFL rules- If by some miracle we have a full healthy list- is there any limit to how many AFL listed players we can field in the Beagles? The above team has 20 AFL listed players- can we trot that out or do we need to cut some and inject ammo spuds to level the playing field?

Good news : Strong numbers on the track with only new boy Barnett in rehab. (Suspect there may have been others missing other than Bazzo)

Bad news : Not the best 20 seconds of training footage you’ll see - one kick too long, another falls short plus a dropped mark.

According to this article everyone except Barnett and Bazzo trained at least part of the session with the main group. You love to see it

West Coast braved the searing heat of late January to put in a solid session at Mineral Resources Park on Monday. Here’s what we saw.

PLENTY ON DECK

It was this time last year that West Coast’s horror injury run really started to bite and seemingly never eased in a disastrous 2022.

Twelve months on and the Eagles had 42 out of the 44 listed players starting the session at Mineral Resources Park on Monday.

Ruck draftee Harry Barnett was the only player who started in the rehab group, while second-year defender Rhett Bazzo is still on leave from the club as he grieves the tragic death of his mother.

Nic Naitanui.

In good signs, veteran Shannon Hurn, as well as fellow premiership defender Liam Duggan, did the first half of the session with the main group, having spent much of the year on light duties.

Hurn, 35, has not lost any power in his legs, spearing several pinpoint kicks to teammates, while Duggan’s class also shone.

Reigning fairest and best Tom Barrass was without his cast again and tested his previously injured hand with a series of strong marks.

Campbell Chesser took part in a lot of ball work and running, before stepping out for the contact drills in the second half of the session.

REACHING FOR THE SUN

Exciting forward Liam Ryan continues to enjoy showcasing his leap, even on his unsuspecting teammates at training.

This time his victim was youngster Brady Hough, who had his shoulders sat on by the high-leaping Ryan at the end of a training drill.

All smiles, Ryan comfortably soared on to his teammate, showing he’s ready for some big hangers in 2023.

Ryan is significantly fitter this pre-season and spent time working up the ground in some of the full-ground drills.

PUMPED UP KIDS

West Coast might be looking to youth, but the youth don’t look so young!

Midfielders Jai Culley and Reuben Ginbey continue to impress every week against their more senior opponents, with not only their size but their progression this summer.

Culley, who played four games last year after being picked up in the mid-season draft, has put on a significant amount of muscle and showcased it by exploding out of packs and shaking off teammates who tried to stop the dreadlocked bull.

The teenager looked almost a certain started in the Eagles’ best 23 for round one.

Jai Culley has added plenty of muscle this summer.

Ginbey has been all the talk this pre-season and it was again on show as he showed he’s ready for the AFL.

Training as both a backman and midfielder, Ginbey was explosive and excitingly combative, laying a monster tackle on Alex Witherden, who took a minute to get up.

They weren’t the only players throwing their weight around, with forward Oscar Allen winding himself when he leapt for an intercept mark, only to land flat on his back.

Allen got up and completed the rest of the session after a few moments on the sidelines.

It was very amateurish haha
