Agree on the competition for spots point.

The competition for spots in the backline will be fierce especially if Yeo and or Shuey spend significant time there.

Auto selections if fit: Barrass, McGovern, Hurn, Duggan, Cole
Next in Line: Hunt, Bazzo, H. Edwards, Rotham, Witherden, Foley, Hough (Jones)
Developing: Baker, Burgiel, Ginbey,
Don't recon Duggan should be an auto selection.

Nor Hurn. I expect he will be phased out of the League team this year. Gets first dibs but as the season rolls on, if he slows further this year I expect selectors arms will be forced and he will either retire mid season or finish off in the WAFL.

Not dreaming, just the way I think it will go. He may surprise me but I feel at his age he is likely to slow down significantly this year and he won't keep up with where I hope our game plan is headed. And yes I agree he will step away as he is very unselfish. Whether that is to retirement or WAFL I don't know but suspect if will be before the end of the season.
Gov, Barrass Duggan Yeo- more than enough experience down back

Jayden Hunt witnessed first-hand Melbourne going from strugglers to stars and he can see plenty of similarities in the Eagles’ nest.

Hunt, 27, says he’s been impressed with just how hard West Coast are training this summer, seeing a “steely reserve in all the boys to improve” after their disastrous 2022.

Melbourne were in a similar position to the Eagles in 2019, winning just five games but two years later they became the benchmark of the competition after winning a drought-breaking premiership at Optus Stadium.

Hunt did not play in the grand final win over the Western Bulldogs because of injury, but he knows what it takes to go from the bottom to the top quickly.

“Coming back from a disappointing 2019 there was this new hunger with the Dees. I can feel that with the Eagles,” Hunt told The West Australian.

“Everyone’s as fit as they’ve ever been. All the GPS figures are off the roof. I really see that point to prove mindset where I think people play their best footy, when they’re trying to prove people wrong and trying to improve.
“From day one I noticed it. I am loving the fight from everyone.”

Two-time John Worsfold medallist Elliot Yeo has been the standout for Hunt on the track, a good sign for the Eagles’ hopes of climbing the ladder.

“He’s had a few injury problems the last few years but I guess being over in Victoria there’s not a lot talked about the WA teams,” he said.

“Some of the things he does around the ball is quite amazing. He’s a great player and I’m really excited to see him in full flight.”

Crossing to the Eagles as an unrestricted free agent, Hunt was known for his explosive pace across his 114 games for Melbourne.

Don’t expect it to be the only thing Hunt brings to the table, saying he’s got plenty to offer across half-back.

“I like to use my speed, I have other clubs in the bag as well like my work rate and that defensive positioning as well,” he said.

“I played a more lockdown role last year for the Dees, so I definitely value my defensive attributes as well.

“I am looking to always bring the speed both in offence and defence.
“I think they want me to bring that speed, breaking lines. So I will look to implement that as well as being solid defensively.”

West Coast coach Adam Simpson has flagged the Eagles are entering a new era and Hunt’s work across half-back is seen as an important part.

But he’s no certainty to have his name put there on the whiteboard week-in, week-out with Luke Shuey as well as Yeo, Liam Duggan and Jamaine Jones all in line to fill the flanks.

Instead of seeing it as a negative, Hunt said the competition for spots was good for the side and backed himself to play in several positions.

“I found that with my time at the Dees, where the growth and improvement come from is the guys not getting a game, given they’re pushing the ones in it,” Hunt said.

“No one gets complacent. I’ve found it’s important to have really good depth so everyone’s always on their toes to improve.

“(I will play) half-back for now and we’ll see how the seasons go. Potentially wing or even half-forward. I’ve played all three positions in my career, so I’m confident with all three of those.”

At Melbourne, Hunt played in several big games like Queens’ Birthday clashes and finals, but even he admits he was envious of the rivalry of a western derby and is looking forward to his first in round three.

“Always coming over here was a tough gig. Normally they’ve got the crowd over 90 per cent going the Eagles way so I am looking forward to being on the other end of that,” he said.

“One thing you miss in Melbourne is that derby feel. There are 10 teams in Victoria so while there are rivalries it doesn’t stack up to what it sounds like over here. I think the derby will be a lot of fun.

“It doesn’t happen as much now days but I do think it’s going to be that tougher sort of footy. I’ve played in a few big games and that intensity lifts.”
What a load of pointless fluff and happy talk that article is. I am not criticising Hunt. He is given a bunch of talking points by the club's media department to regurgitate, such as the old chestnut they roll out every year about everybody setting PB's and training the house down. But the crap The West puts out and calls footy coverage is embarassing. Not one piece of information in that article that is of any interest to West Coast supporters. Just cliches and fluff. How about a general description of what changes they are trying to make in the different areas of the ground instead.

I reckon he was probably given verbal guarantees about being considered to be clearly in the best 22 in order for him to decide to play on. He wouldn't be on big money. And there is no team success likely to motivate him to play on. I reckon if they told him he was borderline best 22 and may have to play some of the year in the WAFL if everybody is fit then he would have retired. Rightly or wrongly i expect to see him play every game if fit.

99% of footy media fits that description.

The Bunga conundrum is real in 2023. He definitely got lucky in 2022 with Gov out for so long that he could play on stronger bodies and float off.

His kick mark style has really slowed and ruined the flow of play as he always takes the safer option and uses his full clock allocation and it has been getting worse every year since 2019.

I fully expect Bunga to get first dibs and somewhat rightfully so, but I don’t expect him to be dropped or retire mid season. If it’s obvious it’s passed him and we’re healthy, He’ll probably get rested more and more often before announcing it’s his last season and get a send off in rd 24 against Adelaide and kick 9 long bombs to one up JK
