If ever there was a case of a player owing a club it was Rioli at West Coast. He turned his back on the club so as far as I’m concerned he can GAGF

And yet when the Eagles expressed their (rightful) displeasure at the situation, we were made out to be the bad guys in the media and amongst the most strident Nizzy haters on here.

**** Rioli.

I will forever be thankful to Willie Rioli for handing us both Ginbey & Hewett in the same draft & setting us up for possibly one of our best hauls ever. He has zero integrity, hope he sucks failure at Port.

Um I think you need to thank JHF more than Willie.

Willie had nothing to do with the trade of pick 2 for 8 and 12.

But they are one and the same...Willy turns into Horn. Hence a smaller number getting larger. ;)

Rioli is definitely too stupid to imply that West Coast didn't support him or we had a poor culture. He is just trotting out the usual lines to make Port fans happy.

The fact he suggests he wants to play as many games as Burgoyne should be enough information to suggest he operates at surface level. I'm not sure he could answer how many games he would need to play beyond his current games to get to Burgoynes.

But damn he can football, so I'm looking forward to that!

Rioli's long gone, and do we really care anymore?......I don't think so! The media's attempts to torch WC on the back of this fiasco were completely lost on Rioli. He didn't (still doesn't) have the social awareness to fully understand the implications around this whole issue. In short, he was well and truly out of his depth in trying to provide a digestible and balanced excuse around his decision to move to Port Adelaide. In life, sometimes you get burnt.....WC were certainly all of that.

* Rioli.
There is no question that Rioli displayed very poor attitude to the club at a time where they had every right to expect some repayment for their loyalty in sticking by him. I know there was self interest in that but they could have just sacked him, particularly on the second strike. What the club did do wrong however, is let him return in very poor condition. Obviously Ports wouldn’t allow that as he looks fitter than I’ve ever seen him

So what would would be our intended trade offer if Willie wasn’t leaving at all? Would it definitely delivered on our intended result of splitting the 2 pick for 8 & 12?

Yep.

F2nd for Rioli about right.

He certainly wasn't the main part of the deal.
The point is we simply wouldn’t have landed 8 & 12 for 2 without him being an asset we could offload to make that happen. It’s true. No one had 8 & 12 to give us. It’s certainly no credit to him for wanting to jump ship, but he’s part of the reason we could pull off getting both our WA targets (if Ginbey ‘slipped’ enough) So again, thanks Willie and sayonara baby!

I will forever be thankful to Jackson Nelson for handing us both Ginbey & Hewett in the same draft & setting us up for possibly one of our best hauls ever. He has way too much integrity, hope he goes on to win a Flag with the Beagles and one day becomes the first coach/CEO of the Eagles.

Both Matera and LeCras were our main focal point at FF for a few seasons while we transitioned in new key forwards.

Not saying Ryan should be the long term plan, but he could be an effective stop gap

Troy Wilson
Andrew McDougal
Ash Hansen
Jackovich
Gardener

They played as tall forwards.

Phil played small and kicked most the goals around that time. He was a champ but not a FF.

Sokol would be the closest like for like wouln't he.
A bit short but very strong, good bodywork and very good mark. Noted goal kicker.

We need someone that can take a strong consted mark up front/deep constenly imo.
Sokol is 186cm and isn’t as quick/strong/agile as Darling. Club will just sit a mid size player on him and allow one of their key backs to intercept or worse double team oscra

Hey Obeanie1 just let us know how we get 8 & 12 and or similar without offloading Rioli? What’s the specific deal you have drawn up?

It’s nowhere near straightforward or a given we would have achieved it. We knew we wanted Reuben but intel said he’d likely still be there later in the top 10. So we give up 2 and hope we still get our man plus another gun shortly after. Show me just how we get there without using Rioli as a key chip to give up? Port needed to want Rioli enough to give up 8. GWS needed to want 1 enough and be sure that their best option was going to be gone at 3. It’s far more complex than us just waltzing in with 2 and miraculously coming out with 8 & 12. How exactly again do we arrive at that without freeing Willie?

Here’s your very simple deal that would have worked for us to get our picks with or without offloading Rioli for reference:

Real nothing burger of a training session today. Players only out there for a little of an hour and only did pretty low intensity drills in the time they were out there

There was also a significant number of players not there or doing light duties -
• Hurn, Waterman, Barnett, Baker, Shuey, Allen, JWilliams, Chesser, Jones and Duggan all were on light duties
• Trew, Bazzo and Darling all no shows
• Edwards of the Luke variety and Petch both did running on the outer oval. Both were moving at good pace so I’d guess it’s not long before they return to the main group

Little details
• Dewar completed the session in full. Skills look good albeit there was little to no pressure. He’s also very slightly built
• When they did split into line groups, Hewett was pulled from the mids and joined the forwards
• Burgiel looked a bit bigger than I recall seeing him pre-Christmas
• Not sure how long it will take to happen, but I can see Long becoming a crowd favourite. Nice clean skills, think he’ll be an opportunist goal sneak and looks to be a bouncy/happy sort of personality
• The club was nice enough to have the superbowl playing on the electronic scoreboard which was more interesting than the training tbh.
• They then pulled a total dick move and turned it off with less than a minute to play as the players had all left
• Journos were asking the WCE media handler about Darling but were getting donuts. Not even a time frame

You are forgetting how Matera played, he was very much a lead up out of the goal square player.

You only have to review the names above (Jakovich? Say no more) and you will realise why Matera became the focal point until Lynch came good

Firstly, thanks for linking that article. I hadn’t seen it before and it’s actually a pretty good breakdown of the trade.

Was a good read on a complicated deal and it confirms something that I’d suspected- WCE and North were unhappy with what Port were paying for Rioli and JHF respectively and it was GWS who got it all over the line by paying overs for pick 1 whilst also pointing out that both clubs were realising their own objectives so don’t worry about what Port are paying

All that said, Rioli didn’t help us get 8 and 12 for pick 2, rather it complicated things. The reality is that without the pick swap we stood to get nothing for Rioli - it’s why we arguably accepted unders for pick 2 as we we wouldn’t have got Ports F2 without doing the pick swap

Must admit, I haven't seen that much of him but the gams I have, I thought he seem similar in game style. Under height but very strong in body and very good mark . He doesn't look as quick though.

Regardless, if the worst happens we'll need someone with power and physical contested marking ability.

Keitel is more a poor mans Allen?

That last paragraph is the most insight anyone has injected into this conversation. Fair bit of sense with that line of thinking. I do think the wiz ROB already had the idea prior of splitting 2 for multiple first rounders to get what we wanted. Could we have got there some other way without offering a key piece Port wanted, not sure

A player built like him has to be more like a Dustin Martin/trac/danger at AFL level. There’s a reason why he has been un drafted for more than a decade
