The thing the players, staff and club as a whole forget is that the end of 2021 was just as deplorable as the whole of 2022
Yep, my enthusiasm for all the new blood and the strong fitness base we are supposedly building; and the return of quality senior players from long term injury - is tempered when I recall that we've been sliding since 2018 GF, not just 2022..
But things are definitely looking brighter.....(so far)

It ebbs and flows between the two. Woosha won a flag off extreme running fitness and skills being secondary. When Simmo came in, the comp was very defensive and it required elite kicking (ie skills) to pick through the zone. So he prioritised skills over fitness.

Richmond and Melbourne took it back the other way, with extreme fitness allowing them to run all day and force the ball forward. Sydney and Collingwood also embraced that last year and Geelong was somewhere in between (I think they won a flag off good tactics but expect them to drop a notch in 2023).
**** me, if I had a buck for every time someone says Geelong will drop, I'd have at least 20 dollars

So today was the last training day for the year before they go away for the Christmas/New Year break and I’m back to doing legitimate reports

Session started about 8.15 with warmups on the main oval before moving to the outside oval when the balls came out and finished about 10.45 after a pretty gruelling 3 laps around the oval. Players were spent by the end of it

In between was goal kicking practice, mids doing stoppage work, forwards and backs doing one on one leading/defending, full ground ball movement under pressure and more goal kicking

• Waterman was a no show but sent his brother along instead
• Duggan the only other player not to put in an appearance
• Dewar again was a spectator though
• Chesser and Bazzo did the warmup and a bit of kicking but then left. Did come back out at the end but didn’t do anything
• Petruccelle and Barnett only did running. Petch did a fair bit more than he did on Wednesday so I suspect whatever his issue is, it’s minor
• The rest of the squad (37 of them for Dark Sharks benefit) did basically the full session although the draftees plus Naitanui, Darling, Shuey, O’Neill, Foley, Barrass and Yeo sat out the contested full ground drill
• I saw LEdwards multiple times but still found it hard to pick him on during drills
• Ryan was very good in the contested work with his running
• Glimpses of what Hunt will bring with his run off half back
• Prioritising quick ball movement during drills
• Naitanui moved well
• Yeo also looked good in the drills he was involved in
• Long is a very tidy set shot at goal
• Notable that Clark kept pace with Cripps in the final run around the oval which was a handicapped race of sorts
• Young Jack Williams did some nice things during the full ground drill

Training doesn’t resume now until January 9 I believe so hopefully the players all return in good shape ready for the next phase of our preseason

There fitness level is no where near top notch. they have a long way to go to many players still puffing after a short session lets hope we see a marked improvement. Hopefully the new year they will get serious about the players fitness
Lol

Cheers. How's Ginbey looking? He may surprise some doubters on here.

Puffing after a short session you say?

Jnr is at Port nowadays

Ah **** it. I had just typed all my observations down too. Not going to delete them now so here they are, a lot of it will be rehashing what Keys said but whatever 😂

  • Longer session today. Started on Oval 1 (the one with restricted access) around 8:15 with some warmups before heading to Oval 2 about half an hour later. Finished up around 10:45.
  • No sign of Jake Waterman, Duggan or Bazzo (edit: looks like he was there at the start). Pretty sure I saw Dewar but he just watched basically
  • Alec Waterman was there though, trained with the forwards. He’s a big unit
  • Nic Nat was out there and actually took part in a couple of stoppage drills - nothing too strenuous though, just some ruck work and skills - and some goal kicking. Looked to be moving pretty well.
  • Petch and Barnett were the only two who trained away from the main group for the whole session. Ran laps and did some stop/start running with a couple of trainers, nothing too advanced though.
  • Foley and XON took part in most of the drills but also did some sprints and agility stuff towards the end with trainers, looked like a fitness test. Same with Yeo and Darling though they seem slightly ahead of where those two are
  • The draftees took part in the majority of drills but ran laps at the end as a group. Ginbey again the most impressive runner of the bunch by a fair bit.
  • Chesser was involved in the light stuff at the start but didn’t participate in any of the ball movement and stoppage drills
  • Baker and Burgiel again training with the backs when they split into their line groups - fair to say we can pencil them down as defenders for now. SPS, Jones and Long again with the forwards.
  • Very impressed with Culley so far this preseason, particularly with his kicking. I knew he was a bit of an inside bull but some of the kicks he hit while running at pace today were sublime. Clark looks very good too.
  • Thought Ryan trained well today, looked involved and lively during the ball movement drills.
  • They did a few intense laps of the oval at the end and I was impressed with the enigma Luke Edwards, was running really well at the front and gaining distance on whoever was behind him
  • Hunt showed a few flashes of his pace during the ball movement drill which was promising

Yeah I don't care if there's a bit of double up keep them coming in the new year.

Lol - I didn't say they drop out of the 8. Just that they won't win a flag next year. A bit like Melbourne this year- I expect they will be that rung below.

Geelong has too many unfair advantages and ex players in HQ to ever bottom out properly.

He’s a really good trainer. Aerobically seems very good.

Going to be a bull on the inside once his body develops and he fills out that huge frame of his

The draftees have been eased into it so far making it hard to draw too many conclusions on his football ability.

It’s almost like we watched the same session lol

Always good when someone else has noticed similar things
Think I might have been watching a different one to our footy mad mate though

Damn, I also watched the session today.

Seems like it might be a bit of a rehash of the last one, but so be it.

In all seriousness, I appreciate your efforts Juicy and Keys 👍👍
