Exciting small forward Phoenix Gothard will begin his career in jumper number 29, with the livewire from Albury looking to break into Adam Kingsley’s side amongst a host of dangerous small forwards. The GIANTS’ first selection at pick 12, Gothard will takes the number from the departing Cameron Fleeton, with Zac Williams and inaugural GIANT Dom Tyson also prior occupants.

Tasmanian James Leake will take on the number 30, worn by inaugural GIANT Taylor Adams, as well as Lachie Plowman, and most recently left vacant by departing ruckman Matt Flynn.

Dashing West Australian defender Joe Fonti will pull on jumper number 37 for his debut season, most notably worn by inaugural GIANT Setanta O’hAilpin as well as Rory Lobb and Bobby Hill.

GIANTS Academy product Harvey Thomas, who was named the 2023 Academy Player of the Year, will look to make number 28 his own, with Liam Sumner (2012-15) and Zach Sproule (2017-2022) its previous occupants.

Meanwhile, Category B rookie Nathan Wardius will take on the number 42 jumper previously worn by Mark Whiley, Jake Stein and most recently vacated by Jason Gillbee.

So Phil’s #1 & Lloydy’s #38 remain unassigned this year, while #28 & #37 are active again after being unassigned last year.

Current games record holders for the numbers, if these kids want to aim for something…

#28 - 17 games - Zac Sproule (V/AFL: 249 games, Peter Jones, Carlton 1966-79)

#29 - 101 games - Zac Williams (V/AFL: 432 games, Brent Harvey, NM, 1996-2016)

#30 - 33 games - Matt Flynn (V/AFL: 300 games, Francis Bourke, Richmond, 1967-81)

#37 - 74 games - Rory Lobb (V/AFL: 372 games, Adam Goodes, Sydney, 1999-2015)

#42 - 20 games - Jake Stein (V/AFL: 218 games, Robert Walls, Carlton, 1967-78)

Who ran, who didn't? Even with some of the older players training, they don't always run that first time trial.

Anyway, Harvey Thomas did 5:55 at the state combine, so you would presume he would be around 6 minutes; Snooze was a short distance ahead of him, so great time to win. Then Angwin, XOH and Finn all within a couple of steps of Harvey, so good endurance from them.

Who was in the white cap, coming in next? Was that Josh Fahey?

Harvey Thomas second to snooze in the 2km.
I’ll call it now, I reckon he might play round 1.
Let's cool our jets a bit, just because he can run well doesn't mean any other part of his game is going to translate to being ready to play AFL let alone in Round 1 let alone a guy picked from 40+

Yeah I’m just taking a punt. He is a smart user tho… if you can run and use the footy well you’re usually not far away from the best 22.

2km Time Trial Top Five
  1. Toby Bedford
  2. Harvey Thomas
  3. Ryan Angwin
  4. Xavier O’Halloran
  5. Finn Callaghan
Harvey and XOH the surprises there. The other 3 are all known elite runners. Finn is normally right on 6 minutes so to have 5 right on that mark is outstanding.
Whitfield, Cogs, Toby and JKelly all terrific 2km runners, that fact they couldnt make the top 5 says we have a great running list.

I used Finn as my guide, he is generally right on 6, so if harvey did 5.55 at the combine that checks out as a reliable estimate. 2 to 5 has blanketed in just under or around 6 min

Cadman did well, Jason McCartney mentioned it last night on the 7pm zoom session.
